To wear mostly black to a wedding?

When I say black, it's a black dress with a light pink/white floral pattern on it, but I'd be wearing a black jacket too, nude shoes.

Is black too dismal and dreary for a wedding?

Personally, I am getting married soon and if people wore black to my wedding I doubt it would register but I'm aware that everyone has different views.

The last wedding I went to I wore a black dress that had a flower print around the hem and a little on the sleeves with black shoes.

When I arrived there was other ladies with plain black dresses and no one battered a eyelid. Honestly don’t think it matters anymore.

My wardrobe is literally all black I don’t wear anything elseGrin

@IsolaPribby

Do nude shoes really go with a black jacket 🤔
No, they're going to make the outfit look horribly unbalanced.

I wore a black trouser suit - high waisted trousers, short jacket - to a wedding about 35 years ago, with an electric blue blouse and hat!

For me, it’s less an issue for of black not being appropriate for a wedding, and more an issue of black not seeming appropriate for a daytime SUMMER event (of any variety). In my opinion, black on a summer’s day just seems jarring and odd, and not in-keeping with a summery daytime affair. I don’t wear black at all between May-September and wouldn’t dream of wearing black to a summer BBQ/picnic/birthday drinks/wedding.

This was a winter wedding I might add!

FWIW- I also wouldn’t wear a jacket (any colour) to a summer daytime event (I’d wear a shawl or pashmina) and definitely wouldn’t wear nude courts (I’d wear strappy heeled sandals or even some pretty, summery flats such as posh ballet pumps).

In a black jacket and nude courts I’d feel like I was dressed for winter in an office, rather than wafting around a summery wedding.

I love wearing black, and seeing people wearing it, in summer. I think it looks chic. I am obviously talking not about heavy knits but about 'summery' black clothes as in a floaty strappy black cotton dress, black trousers with a rolled-up hem in a light fabric, etc.

@DeadButDelicious I'm getting images of you as Patricia Morrison in the Sisters of Mercy era, or Siouxsie Sioux in her Banshees days. Grin

I've never started a thread before, but I'm tempted to do so to over in Chat to ask MNers what they would think is acceptable for a Goth friend to wear to a non-Goth wedding!

DarceyDashwood · 07/07/2021 12:34

I would think that people getting married at the moment given the amount of stress caused around weddings by the pandemic that people’s outfits would be the last thing they’d be concerned about tbh

I might love you a bit @AutistGoth Grin

I'm more present day Robert Smith, a bit disheveled and pudgy with too much make up for the nursery run! 😂😂

Totally do the thread! I'm interested too!

@AutistGoth and @DeadButDelicious my wedding dress was black velvet, very traditional fishtail pattern, except that there was a three foot train on the back of it and lace inserts into the fishtails.
The something blue was my lipstick Grin

This was the mid 90s, so those were the days!

That sounds gorgeous!

Ah the 90's! I loved my stripy tights and doc martens!

I bought a pair of black and white stripy tights last year from snag (I am 39 years old dagnammit and I will have my stripy tights!!) and I love them. I can't wait for autumn/winter to roll around again so I can wear them again!

@percheron67

I would not wear so much black to a wedding. Slightly off track - Tautology -f you say I there is no need to add personally. So many Mumsnetters do this. It is so annoying.
not nearly half as annoying as those who unnecessarily point and correct others grammar Angry
MrsRussell · 07/07/2021 13:20

Oooh @DeadButDelicious they sound amazing - I used to get mine from Claire's Accessories (I had purple and black, and black and white - do snag do more colours??)
I was always one of those rather haughty Victorian goth types that used to swish around in ballgowns and not DO anything (because skirts got in the way mostly) and I missed out on so much...
I'm derailing the thread so I'll just, ah, creep back into my crypt.
