Will you continue to wear a mask when they’re no longer compulsory?

I can’t really decide how I feel about it- as a pregnant woman with a tendency to get a bit sweaty in the face on warm days, I would like not to have to wear one whenever I’m inside a building that isn’t my own home. And I’m double jabbed so not at much risk. But then you’ve got people from SAGE and the BMA saying we should keep wearing them, and I’d imagine they know a bit better than Sajid Javid whose background is in finance.

What do you think?

YABU- I’ll continue to wear a mask
YANBU - I won’t be wearing a mask anymore.

Wear one all day at work anyway ( NHS ) so it doesn’t bother me and yes will continue to wear on public transport , shops , indoors etc .

ExhaustedFlamingo · 06/07/2021 03:12

Yes, absolutely. It doesn't suddenly become safe on an arbitrary date that Boris and his mate Javid decide.

I'm not against easing restrictions but I think we can't ignore the fact that cases are rising and hospitalisations are creeping up. Thankfully deaths are low, which is a big positive. The concern is Long COVID, we don't know anything about this yet - and some people seem to have been really adversely affected by this even if they only had a mild dose of COVID.

My friend's DH is double jabbed, and he contracted COVID at the weekend. I doubt he'll end up in hospital but he's really poorly with it.

I have loved not getting colds, viruses and other seasonal bugs - I've been well since last March. I'm sure that wearing a mask cuts down my exposure to viruses and germs. Certainly they're annoying at times but my health has been excellent. And then of course there's the risk to others, I'm not inadvertently breathing my germs over them.

I absolutely understand why people are sick of them but for me, there's no question that the benefits of wearing masks greatly outweighs the inconveniences. When COVID numbers drop to very low, I may reconsider. In Asia mask-wearing was the norm pre-COVID, so I don't see any reason to stop doing it.

What I've seen a lot of today is nastiness aimed towards people who have said they'll continue to wear a mask. I suspect there will be judgement towards people that wear masks, especially as time passes and it becomes less common.

I can envisage some places my local Asda where the mask wearers will be the ones having to wear the lanyards declaring their medical conditions, and having people tut at them.

Livingintheclouds · 06/07/2021 04:49

Much as I hate them I'll still wear one on public transport, probably not in shops as very little transmission there.

JustGiveMeGin · 06/07/2021 06:30

Most of us haven't had a cold I suspect because everything has been pretty much closed for 18 months, kids have been kept separated at school so the cold virus hasn't had the same opportunity to spread. If people feel better with a mask and sloshing chemical sanitizer around then good for them.....I haven't used sanitizer more than a few times and the masks will be gone straight away.

tigger1001 · 06/07/2021 06:34

Am in Scotland, so think mask wearing might be around for a little while yet, but once no longer mandated, I won't be wearing one. I struggle to see in them, either my glasses fog or they sit too high on my face so my lenses are in the wrong place. Struggle to hear with others wearing them too. They flare my skin, especially in the warmer weather, and make my skin red and sore for hours after.

AbsolutelyYes · 06/07/2021 06:37

Of course .

It'll only be for a bit anyway before everyone is asked to wear them again

Tumbleweed101 · 06/07/2021 06:44

No. Not for most places. I’m double jabbed and do LFT for work so I’m unlikely to be too much risk to others. We had Covid in the house over Xmas and I’ve worked unmasked in a nursery throughout so my risk of catching it has been high all the way along. I’m not worried about catching it out and about in the odd shop I go to. I’m looking forward to being able to go out and browse again. At the moment I can’t see half the time due to misting up so only pop in quick.

Poppynit · 06/07/2021 08:50

I’ll wear one when I feel it’s necessary like if I go to the supermarket at peak time, busy public transport etc. I will not wear one at work anymore unless I am on the shop floor helping a customer at close proximity.

I do wish people would stop using being “double jabbed” as a reason not to wear one; you can still carry and spread it even if you’ve have both doses. Just say you don’t want to wear one anymore, that’s fine!

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/07/2021 08:52

Yes, will continue in crowded, inside spaces/public transport. Doesn’t hurt me, might help.

cittigirl · 06/07/2021 17:21

Yes if I'm in a busy place

janj2301 · 06/07/2021 17:27

I will for public transport and inside buildings. I also intend to wear one in the future during flu season

LadyofMisrule · 06/07/2021 17:31

Yes

August1980 · 06/07/2021 17:32

Hi Op, same boat. Also have been recalled to work from the office so probably will wear it on the trains and tubes. I don’t like it but I just feel I should wear it when for example walking through a restaurant. All of a sudden I feel bad about breathing on people. I am so sweaty most of my make up is on the mask….I am double vaccinated too but think I will just wear it until the dust settles..

Loverofoldfilms · 06/07/2021 17:34

Yes. I was very very ill with Covid first time round and now have resulting organ damage. I will be masked to the max.

Loverofoldfilms · 06/07/2021 17:36

@AbsolutelyYes

Of course .

It'll only be for a bit anyway before everyone is asked to wear them again

Yes. You are right and being double "vaxxed" will not prevent you from catching Delta or passing the virus on. We are living in a big experiment.
Mesoavocado · 06/07/2021 17:43

Yes of course I will to protect others during a dangerous increase of cases

Thankfully in Scotland it looks like we won't be changing any laws so shouldn't be an issue

Booboospud · 06/07/2021 17:46

I’m 31 Weeks pregnant with an immune condition with my liver and due to this I won’t get the jab whilst pregnant as already high risk. So myself and partner will still wear masks until baby here and I can have the jabs. Unfortunately I won’t be mixing with any friends or family who don’t continue masks and distancing in public just to be on safe side until then.

Weareallvirgins · 06/07/2021 17:47

No way

peppermintpat · 06/07/2021 17:49

I definitely won't be wearing one where I don't have to. I have to wear one all day at work in a care home and I hate it. Sweat and spots Confused

Spidey66 · 06/07/2021 17:52

No. Only if there's a local epidemic and/or we're ordered too.

TheGumption · 06/07/2021 17:53

Nope. I'll enjoy the break from masks until the inevitable return of restrictions after summer 🙄

CosyAcorn · 06/07/2021 17:54

No, I won't be wearing a mask unless I am asked to. I'm living in an area where restrictions barely lifted at all last year and cases continued to rise. I'm going to enjoy all the mini freedoms I can.

But saying that, I will offer to wear a mask and socially distance if I am spending time with anyone who is nervous or is especially vulnerable.

And I understand why many people want to continue to wear masks and don't think the less of anyone for wanting to wear them.

memberofthewedding · 06/07/2021 17:59

No, they are to protect other people and they have done nothing for me.

HeechulOppa · 06/07/2021 18:02

Yes, and now so many will clearly be ditching them based on an arbitrary date I’ll making my young son wear one too
