Will you continue to wear a mask when they’re no longer compulsory?

I can’t really decide how I feel about it- as a pregnant woman with a tendency to get a bit sweaty in the face on warm days, I would like not to have to wear one whenever I’m inside a building that isn’t my own home. And I’m double jabbed so not at much risk. But then you’ve got people from SAGE and the BMA saying we should keep wearing them, and I’d imagine they know a bit better than Sajid Javid whose background is in finance.

What do you think?

YABU- I’ll continue to wear a mask
YANBU - I won’t be wearing a mask anymore.

This!

Keepemguessing · 05/07/2021 15:44

No, unless I have a cold.

RuggerHug · 05/07/2021 15:45

@RuggerHug

This!
I swear the quote option on this app hates me.
bendmeoverbackwards · 05/07/2021 15:46

@Waxonwaxoff0 no I'm not in charge but I think it's a very poor decision by the Government. I hope they will do a U-turn and bring them back and do what they can to ensure people are wearing them properly.

FlyingBattie · 05/07/2021 15:46

If the majority of people ditch them when they can, the one or two people wearing them won't get much protection anyway.
I can (and probably will) wear one, but it won't really protect me from other people not wearing one, IYSWIM.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 05/07/2021 15:47

Nope and another nope

bendmeoverbackwards · 05/07/2021 15:48

@TonTonMacoute

No.

I'm always amused to see people fiddling with their damp masks and then touching door handles and shopping trolleys with their bare hands. I'm not sure that in everyday life they offer quite as much protection as people think they do.

No it's not a perfect science. And we've all heard the fact about particles getting through blah blah. But if they provide even a bit of protection it's worth doing. If someone coughs or sneezes, the mask provides a bit of a physical barrier rather than particles being shot far into the air.
MadameOvary81 · 05/07/2021 15:48

I'm having a ritual mask burning! And any shop etc that insists on wearing one won't be getting my ££££!

Nonmaquillee · 05/07/2021 15:49

Nope
What’s the point of being vaxxed???

SirenSays · 05/07/2021 15:50

I'll probably keep wearing mine in certain places, they aren't fun to wear but after years working in surgery I'm used to them anyway. I'll continue wearing masks whenever I am sick as imo it's a bit grim not to.

Oh bless. Another one planning a mask burning session.

@MadameOvary81 what will you do if they re-introduce them?
KizzyWayfarer · 05/07/2021 15:54

I really hope they continue to make it mandatory on the tube in London. It’s a bit nerve-wracking being in an enclosed space with people as it is. Surveys show a majority want masks on London public transport to continue and people will be put off travelling by tube if mask-wearing stops. Then TfL will be in even more financial trouble than it is.

MyDcAreMarvel · 05/07/2021 15:55

Yes because they work to protect others if worn properly, and this new variant is very contagious. I am double vaccinated not everyone is that fortunate.

userxx · 05/07/2021 15:57

Not a fucking chance. Can't wait to go shopping maskfree.

lazylinguist · 05/07/2021 15:58

No. I haven't found it difficult or particularly uncomfortable to wear one, but I'll certainly stop once it's no longer compulsory. I've had both doses of my vaccine and I'm pretty healthy.

Twoforthree · 05/07/2021 16:07

I think it’s madness to drop them. What’s the point of me wearing them to protect others, if so many others don’t afford me the same care?
It’s selfish not to wear one.

Radio4ordie · 05/07/2021 16:10

I won’t wear one most of the time, might occasionally such as when getting a bus.

Mostly I go to work where we haven’t had to wear one for a long time and have people in my house/their house and we haven’t been required to wear masks in homes either. So probably won’t change that much for me.

1frenchfoodie · 05/07/2021 16:10

Yes in crowded places/where I am in queues.

EarlGreywithLemon · 05/07/2021 16:10

Claudia both Sweden and Russia introduced mask mandates last year:
Sweden: www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-55371102.amp
Russia: www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.voanews.com/covid-19-pandemic/russia-issues-national-mask-mandate-after-coronavirus-cases-surge%3famp

You’ll note that the BBC article describes Sweden as “previously one of only a few nations not to recommend masks in public outside of healthcare settings.”
Variants can ensue when there is a “copy error” when the virus transmits and replicates - the more transmission, the more copy errors. The “copy errors” with an evolutionary advantage will then proliferate. Masks reduce transmission, so reduce the risk of copy errors. Do they eliminate the risk? Of course not. Reduce it very significantly? Probably not, but they do reduce it. Since all other measures that would help are being dropped, we are now down to “every little helps” on this one.

HomerSimpsonsDonut · 05/07/2021 16:10

Absolutely will not be wearing one ever again. As soon as Bozza announces we don't have to wear one mine is straight in the bin, no question.

I wouldn't judge or pass comment should someone choose to keep wearing theirs though.

How noble of you @HomerSimpsonsDonut
CookPassBabtridge · 05/07/2021 16:14

Definitely not, can't wait to get rid!

PixieKitten · 05/07/2021 16:16

Hell no

ClaudiaWankleman · 05/07/2021 16:17

@EarlGreywithLemon If you actually read that story you posted about Sweden, you'll note it isn't a mandate, just a recommendation. Equally the Russian mandate doesn't actually require masks to be worn in all shops/ libraries/ schools etc. Much more limited than in the UK.
