To ask guests to take lateral flow test?

It's our sons 1st birthday party on Saturday and we are planning a get together in the back garden.

We don't have a massive garden, and although we won't be going over the numbers allowed, it could be difficult for everyone to distance.

My brother qmd his family, has just phoned up to cancel as their daughter has just tested positive for covid, and our dd's school has sent home two classes from her year group today.

Aibu to ask all adults attending take a lft as a precaution?

I would happily do one; I think it's a responsible thing so ask. I know they're not very sensitive and sometimes miss positive cases but that's not a reason not to do one.

Oblomov21 · 05/07/2021 16:53

I do seem the harm in asking. It's OTT. Either have a party, outside, which is less risk. Or don't bother.

DillyDot · 05/07/2021 16:56

@Teacupsandtoast

My friend had a negative lft, positive pcr. They really are quite pointless
My DD has a sniffle and did one and it showed she was positive. This was later confirmed by PCR. She really wasn't very unwell and had no "traditional" symptoms at at all so in her case the lateral flow test was quite the opposite of pointless; it probably saved a fair number of her friends from getting sick and passing it on to their families.
Topseyt · 05/07/2021 16:59

I think you are OTT. I would decline.

Your party though, so you get to make the rules. I don't see how you intend to police it. Are you really going to stand at the door demanding to see their results for the proof that they have done the test?

MrsPsmalls · 05/07/2021 17:08

For people asking me how it was done, the host provided the lateral flow tests and we did them in the car before we went it. It just takes 20 mins or so. And no they didn't ask to see them, but who is going to lie about it? We just went in and said yup all negative, as was the case for everyone.

@Twoforthree

And this is why the virus is spreading. Such a negative reaction from many posters, to a sensible request
Why is it a sensible request. When 1) I ordeofor it to e as effective as possible, guests should actually isolate for 2-3 days before party, then take the test just before attending.

Otherwise there's little point. Because if you catch covid the day before it's not going to show on the LFT.
🤷‍♀️

Yes it might show someone as positive. But it's more likely to show as negative and people be less careful as a result.

But it didn't mean you weren't positive...

It's spreading because that's what viruses do. Not because people don't want to do a LFT before going to a 1yo birthday party outside in the middle of summer.

I just don't understand why you think that provides protection.
 • you could have had a false negative.
 • you could have been incubating and not showing as positive yet. A test, say, the following day could show you were a carrier.
 • you have no idea how many people lied about their results - and people would. Lots of people don't care and many can't afford to keep having to isolate and take time off work when they're feeling perfectly fit and healthy.

This with bells on.

Yes it spreading, as viruses do, but due to the vaccine roll out, deaths are well below single figures each day.

Do you want to retain these restrictions until zero deaths?!

me4real · 05/07/2021 17:29

Why would anyone object?

@Jaxhog It's just a bit officious and the tests are annoying and outright unpleasant to do- maybe less so for some people but that doesn't make it less unpleasant for those for whom it's unpleasant.

@PurpleDaisies So, you test twice a week (voluntarily, without it being for work or any particular other reason than someone in government suggested it) then? You would be one in a fair few thousand I reckon.

I had heard of it once a couple of months ago, so it's not that the message isn't getting out at all, but it's not something I would've done for my own reasons (not just discomfort.) I don't think many people would.

Bizawit · 05/07/2021 17:31

@Littlecaf

“It is not as easy as having a cup of tea. How utterly ridiculous.”

Are you kidding? It’s not utterly ridiculous! Take swab out of packet, swab your nose and throat, put in the solution, put solution on the test strip, wait 30 mins. You can go and do something else if you want while you wait! It’s almost as easy as doing a pregnancy test, at least you don’t get wee on your hand!

That. Is. It.

I really don’t understand what the big deal is.

I absolutely hate them. Find them really painful and uncomfortable. Can barely bring myself to do one when I have symptoms. Certainly wouldn’t do it to attend a party!

Enjoy myself a cup of tea though 😂

me4real · 05/07/2021 17:31

And no they didn't ask to see them, but who is going to lie about it?

@MrsPsmalls People who wanted to attend but tested positive.

me4real · 05/07/2021 17:32

I don't think OP would have that problem for a first birthday party, though.

Bizawit · 05/07/2021 17:34

@DillyDot she had symptoms though. I’d take one if I had symptoms in any case (party or no party).

She might do if there were young DC involved who were excited, only to be told right at the last minute that they couldn't go.

Bet lord of people Didn’t even do it- just chucked it in the bin
sophiasnail · 05/07/2021 17:36

I would be happy to take one! If I've got it, I would rather know!

People could easily not do it but say they have.
Dontforgetyourbrolly · 05/07/2021 18:05

U can ask as is your right , but don't get upset if people take offence / cancel

JeanneDoe · 05/07/2021 18:19

I probably wouldn’t go.
I have never taken a Covid test and am not planning on doing so until I go abroad on holiday next month.

RedHelenB · 05/07/2021 18:20

Yabu.

lljkk · 05/07/2021 18:57

Have you decided what you will do, @Blue1212?

DillyDot · 05/07/2021 18:59
@DillyDot she had symptoms though. I’d take one if I had symptoms in any case (party or no party).
She did an online gov.uk symptom checker which that there was no need to get a test with the kind of symptoms she was experiencing (cold).
