This thread is an eye opener. I don’t know a single person who would be anywhere near 40 when their oldest turns 18. My friend with the oldest child had hers at 27 (and she referred to herself as a “child bride” ).

Yes definitely.

I got married at 28 and had DD1 at 29, some of my friends were still travelling round, doing masters and stuff like that, a few years off settling down, and I was the youngest to have children in my group. Was also the youngest at my NCT group, the other women were ten years older than me having their first. When I had DD2 at 33 I was more the average age for people in the area having their first child, or still one of the younger ones. As I said earlier DD1 always says I'm so much younger than her friends' mums!

No regrets though, 29/30 was perfect for us. Also after I had DD2 I was diagnosed with endometriosis so goodness knows what effect that may have had on fertility had I left a few more years.

Age of first child was younger 18 years ago.

I was 21 when I had my eldest, an accidental pregnancy. Both had good jobs (20K each), had been together 4 years, so decided to just crack on and be parents. Second one planned, youngest another whoops.

My old school friends have just had their first babies or have toddlers.

My “Mum” friends are all much older than me and had their babies later.

I was 48 when my eldest turned 18. They are coming up 21 now
I will be 53 when my youngest turns 18.

I am 50 now. I was the first of all my friendship group to have kids, at 30 but, was equally the first ( and only) to own my own home and then meet someone and marry so timing was right was for me to start a family when i did. I started work at 18 after 6th form, so was where i wanted to be financially at 29, when i planned my first. I was also the first ( and only) to divorce! I like to be first! 😉

When my youngest child is 18 I will be 60

I was 50 and 52 when my adult children turned 18.

49 and 53. We debated a third but one of the factors in stopping at two was that we didn't want to be eyeing up 60 with an 18 year old! Already looking forward to getting them out of the house tbh.

I have been thinking about this (slow day) and I am genuinely surprised at how young people are.

I thought again and I know of 3 friends and family who had kids before 30. One was an accidental pregnancy of a uni friend at 20 and the other two were family members who married in their mid 20s and had their firsts within 18 months. Then biggish gaps between first and second. Real cross section of geographies, education, jobs and income etc. Most of my family were late 30s for first and over 40 for second.
