Thank goodness Polly.co.uk has figured out how to market to women. I hope their policy documents also come in emoji formats because my lady brain really appreciates it.

Also that’s where I’ve been going wrong! Of course buying lipstick instead of life insurance is bad. I see the error of my ways. Thank you Polly, I’ll be better.

Christ, that's awful. Truly awful.

GreyhoundG1rl · 05/07/2021 11:07

Fuck off, Polly, you stupid birdbrain.
That ad makes it very clear why no "mums" are buying insurance from them.

Oblomov21 · 05/07/2021 11:09

Really really bad. Offensive.

Blossomtoes · 05/07/2021 11:12

@Zilla1

I do wonder whether some organisations have social media managed independently from traditional communications. I recall the RA social media manager arguably openly disagreeing with their sort of press announcement (hidden in the room marked beware of the tiger).
I think you’ve got a point there. There seems to be a lot of “Social media is a young thing, let’s give it to the intern”.
HarebrightCedarmoon · 05/07/2021 11:12

I'm not sure I'm the target market with the use of "BE LIKE", anyway. Who speaks/writes like that?

QueenAdreena · 05/07/2021 11:13

Fucking Polly. Made an enquiry for a quote with them once, decided to use a different company and told them that (and asked to be taken off their call list) but they have harassed me ever since. They call at least a couple of times a week. Even if they were half the price I wouldn’t use them now.

Hmmm... Is this actually bordering on the illegal?

I was just going to say - I thought there were rules about sexist advertising.

@MindyStClaire

Ugh. You know this was written by men whose partners are on here falling to pieces doing all the night feeds, all the childcare and all the housework because he Has To Work, and then he spends all weekend on his hobby (which is cycling).
That made me laugh because I am sure its true!
Igmum · 05/07/2021 11:28

FFS this is a truly dire advert. Hello target market, gosh you're stupid. Glad they've taken it down

Oh, they've taken it down? Too late for anyone who's already seen it, but better late than never.

Yeah I get the sense a lot of big companies have left their social media to the young interns or grads thinking that it's 'their world' to navigate.

They seem to forget that SM is an extension of advertising and is a representation of their brand - some intern with itchy Twitter fingers may end up being a liability.

How many times have companies had to apologise for a bad tweet or a sarky response that presumably wasn't vetted by the higher ups.

RicherThanYew · 05/07/2021 11:44

Hmm. I'm wondering if Polly needs a nice picture of size 26 me in a bikini (under a minidress) wearing lipstick posted on their ad to help with revenue, that's sure to boost sign ups right?

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 05/07/2021 11:45

Just been looking for that facebook post, so I can add some 'helpful feedback' on it. It doesn't seem to be there. Has it been removed? If it hasn't, has anyone got a link to it, as I can't get to it, and I would so like to have a full and frank exchange of views, even if they get removd Grin

Bikemum · 05/07/2021 11:48

I just looked through their Facebook page so I could leave a comment on that horror of an advert, (sadly it's been taken down, they must have got wind we were coming for them) and oh my, what a pile of patronising, inane horseshit. How is anyone actually buying life insurance from them?

EvilPromPrincess · 05/07/2021 11:49

I don't think it's a social media thing exclusively, sexist shit advertising has been happening since ads have been happening.

And Twitter and Facebook are not for the youth anyway. Facebook is a social media graveyard that most teenagers wouldn't touch. That's where their nan goes to chat with their Uncle John. It's where you can complain on the local village group about stray cats, stray bins and stray white van men.

Unless their interns are 40 it just wouldn't make sense to pass it on to a young twenty something.

sunnysidegold · 05/07/2021 11:50

It's awful. It would stop me from looking anywhere near them for cover.

UmamiMammy · 05/07/2021 11:53

Until I saw this I had never heard of them.............I am now aware of their existence and will make sure I never put any business their way!

ErrolTheDragon · 05/07/2021 12:01

I sincerely hope that was 'exceptional' marketing, but unfortunately probably not.

kindaclassy · 05/07/2021 12:02

but many who just discover them will at least check price... It's not an innocent move, and it works.
LalalalalalaLand123 · 05/07/2021 12:12

Well that's a company I will never use, ugh.

Coyoacan · 05/07/2021 12:28

But we could do without the "long hour" hostile to women patronising comments, thanks. Some of us do just as well, if not better than men, and keep up, even if you as an individual aren't

@kindaclassy Long hours are hostile to women who have or would like to have children, or do you think one should just have children for the pain of childbirth and then hand them over to a nanny?

I live in Mexico. In the 1980s, it felt like every bank I entered had a woman bank manager. But then the country opened up a lot more to foreign investment and the new foreign companies had a culture of long working hours and women in general dropped out of management rules.

kindaclassy · 05/07/2021 12:36

Coyoacan

I find your comment highly offensive. I am a mother and I can absolutely hold any job a man can! If I want to work long hours, I can just as any father can.

I work bloody hard, I am as good (if not better) as any man, and I am not even bother replying to your "nanny" comment, because you would not say that to my husband.

If you want to improve working conditions for FAMILIES, go for it. But don't you dare put it on the back of women and pretend we need more help than men. That is the attitude that keeps holding us back and I am sick of it.

Well I work in marketing and run my own business now. I also worked the long hours while I had young DC. But, I am intelligent enough to realize that the long hours culture is good for no one. Which is why Millennials, most of whom have no kids, have said no thanks to the long hours culture and yes to real work life balance. And I applaud that thinking, andoffer it to my employees.

And the men I worked for in multinationals all stayed in long hours to avoid putting the kids to bed - why else have staff meetings at 6pm? But time for ‘client liaison golf’ in the afternoons 🙄

2021DNA · 05/07/2021 12:44

The ad is grim and sexist, but it’s probably targeted to a working class customer who might not always think they have the money for life assurance.
