Thank goodness Polly.co.uk has figured out how to market to women. I hope their policy documents also come in emoji formats because my lady brain really appreciates it.

Also that’s where I’ve been going wrong! Of course buying lipstick instead of life insurance is bad. I see the error of my ways. Thank you Polly, I’ll be better.

I clicked on one of their other ads out of curiosity to see what the cost would be. They started calling 4 times a day for a week even after I asked them to stop twice. I forgot to use my dead number on the query, nightmare.

ArcheryAnnie · 05/07/2021 10:21

Which emojis would you use for men? I presume there's one of Y-fronts, because it's clear that these frivolous men just spend all their money on chuddies rather than look after their families, the scamps.

And if this hasn't been put forward in a marketing manager's boardroom for consideration, why not?

ArcheryAnnie · 05/07/2021 10:21

(I say that with a note of bitterness because that's what my ex does, but I bet he's never had an ad target him for doing so.)

beastlyslumber · 05/07/2021 10:22

WTAF. That is sexist and just downright RUDE.

Laiste · 05/07/2021 10:22

Presumably there was a market research done for this? Who the fuck did they talk to that said they found it on target for them? Confused

(I want to say 14 year olds? But that would be insulting to 14 year olds, so i wont Grin)

OnTheSeaShore · 05/07/2021 10:24

Christ that's awful and their site is full of patronising shit as well.

Laiste · 05/07/2021 10:24

Y fronts, x number of pints of larger, a golf club? one leg of a pair of lycra cycling leggings
Laiste · 05/07/2021 10:25

One alloy wheel?

Zilla1 · 05/07/2021 10:27

I do wonder whether some organisations have social media managed independently from traditional communications. I recall the RA social media manager arguably openly disagreeing with their sort of press announcement (hidden in the room marked beware of the tiger).

Zilla1 · 05/07/2021 10:28

@Laiste two emoticons, fish and a bicyclce?

Kona84 · 05/07/2021 10:32

I went online for a quote and was given a call back to discuss.
I was asked how much would I like to spend each month and I said around £10 and I swear the guy actually laughed/snorted at me.
Yet their advertising shows protection for less.
I made an excuse that I had to get back to work and ended the call.
They were pretty persistent at calling me again and again for a couple of weeks after that.

Mums be like, maybe marketing agencies should hire women with kids instead of forcing them out with a long hours hostile work culture

The dad version is Tom.co.uk

Looks similarly stereotyped but maybe a tiny bit more insightful. It's run by a digital marketer so little wonder.

This is just exceptional marketing.
LoathingAndFear · 05/07/2021 10:43

And the stupid female name as well, just so we know that it is safe for women to use.
Boycotted (the name would have been enough, without the advert even).

SometimesIFeedTheSparrows · 05/07/2021 10:47

Mary Portas was saying last week that women make 82% of buying decisions in a family.

Why don't men realise that insulting us isn't a good idea?

Hoppinggreen · 05/07/2021 10:47

I just happy that should I die I won’t leave any money but my daughter will inherit my huge collection of lipstick
Cos that’s what matters to us Mums

in fairness, most are. Marketing is not a male dominated area in most parts.

But we could do without the "long hour" hostile to women patronising comments, thanks. Some of us do just as well, if not better than men, and keep up, even if you as an individual aren't.

EvilPromPrincess · 05/07/2021 10:52

The dad one "Tom" is quite funny. Dh gets it on his facebook, I don't think it's stereotyped at all. It shows dads playing with their children. I think it also does the "dad with 1 child", "dad with two" etc comics where the dad is progressively being crushed by more and more small children. ONe you can definitely identify with as a parent or more than a few Grin

This Polly stuff is a pile of [shite] We really need that emoji actually.

Mylittlesandwich · 05/07/2021 10:53

I can't get life insurance I can afford because of my BMI and mental health issues. I don't think not buying lipstick (which I don't buy anyway) is going to solve this issue...

oldwhyno · 05/07/2021 10:54

This is awful.

But as side note the whole "be like" thing can just fuck right back off where it came from.

I don't mind it as a meme, but it doesn't scream quality life insurance I can count on does it? Confused
minipie · 05/07/2021 10:56

Talk about a quick way to piss off your entire target market.

Quite

everydaysablessing · 05/07/2021 10:57

@Laiste market research is done usually but you've then got to get the senior marketing men to listen which is really effing hard cos obs they no better. It's like pulling teeth.

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 05/07/2021 10:58

@everydaysablessing

I work in marketing and am sick of the main earner men who always suggest mums having a coffee, doing the school run or being a soccer mom when we talk about ensuring comms are relevant to women too.

I either play dumb and ask if that is an accurate representation of women or are they actually more likely to be working and equal in the home or just call it out and say ads have moved on since 1950s.

I used to work for a big retailer who sold men’s, women’s and kids clothes, among other things. Whenever we ran a women’s campaign, we’d have an external ad agency come in, always with several 20/30 something men and one token woman, to pitch us their ideas. Without fail, the target market they’d identify would be something along the lines of ‘A smart, fashion forward woman who is a busy mum but loves to look stylish. She’s always on the go, dashing off to do the school run or going to lunch with the girls!’ We’d always ask them how many women they knew with that sort of life and they’d look a bit embarrassed. And it was way off the mark. Nobody with some glossy WAG type life would shop with us!

Worst of all, there were plenty of women in our business who were the target market, so could have told them how busy working mums like to shop. But then how would the senior managers get free piss ups with the ad agency boys?
