Pregnant immediately after abortion

I feel like an absolute idiot.
Had abortion mid may. Yet to have a period, just tested positive so I guess that’s why.
Not much else to say really. I’m devastated. Have been on the pill the whole time. Not sure even how far along i am, as I’ve had sex a couple of times a week up until last week since two weeks post abortion.
I’ve already called the abortion provider for another consultation and they were lovely and non judgemental but I feel so embarrassed and disgusted in myself. Has anyone else been through this? How did you feel? I am hoping they’ll be able to post the tablets out to me again but as I can’t pinpoint my gestation I feel they might want me to go in to their clinic
Thank you

You poor thing. Obviously for some reason the pill doesn't work for you, are you on any other medication that can interact.

Clearly you need to double or triple up on contraception in the future

SunscreenCentral · 01/07/2021 17:12

No judgment here. Not your fault. Take care & don't be hard on yourself Flowers
Ps I know someone also that this happened to, it's probably more common than you think Brew

Naunet · 01/07/2021 17:12

Oh that’s horrible, I’m so sorry OP, it must be taking a toll on you mentally. I can’t imagine having to go through that again so soon.

Please don’t beat yourself up over it, you were responsible, on the pill, most people do exactly the same, you just got very unlucky. Be kind to yourself Flowers

Mumbletum · 01/07/2021 17:23

I got pregnant on the pill and using a condom, it happens.

A friend got pregnant on the mini pill and was told it was because she was over the recommended weight limit for it!

notalwaysalondoner · 01/07/2021 17:32

I had surgical management for an anembryonic pregnancy at 10 weeks and they immediately scanned me afterwards, and it still took 4 weeks for me to get a negative test and 8 weeks for a period, so not impossible it’s the original pregnancy.

traumatisednoodle · 01/07/2021 17:34

I think sexual health services are keen to keep the at home pills. However you can only do this up to a certain point (can't remember how far maybe 8 or 9 weeks). If it is possible they will let you do it at home again. Good luck Flowers

CaMePlaitPas · 01/07/2021 17:34

You're not an idiot, this can happen with the pill. Have a second abortion if you want, it is there for a reason. Take care of yourself x

Youdiditanyway · 01/07/2021 17:41

Well you only had a termination 6 weeks ago so you can’t be far along and you can have the pills up to 9 weeks I think? So you should be fine with the pills. No judgement here at all, I don’t think the pill is good for you though so I’d look into alternatives.

Ari202 · 01/07/2021 17:44

Your test 2 weeks after the abortion should have been completely negative not faintly positive. They aren’t the same as regular pregnancy tests at all and a faint positive on those test 2 weeks after a medical abortion isn’t right at all.
It could be the case that you indeed are still pregnant from the first pregnancy and that you were too early for a medical abortion and they’ve missed the pregnancy on the scan. I don’t think they should be sending out home abortion kits without scanning first.
They should have called you in to check the location of the pregnancy as soon as you told them your follow up test was still positive (however faint)

Badsituations · 01/07/2021 18:03

@Ari202 the scan was about a week after the abortion, they checked my hcg levels twice one week apart and confirmed that there was no longer a pregnancy. They could see that the pregnancy was in my womb as there was a tiny amount of leftover blood which obviously came out in the days after my scan. I’m absolutely positive that this is a new pregnancy as I also have new pregnancy symptoms such as sore boobs and feeling sick

Ari202 · 01/07/2021 18:08

Then they might want you to go in and get scanned. It’s not nice but it happens. The pill obviously doesn’t work for you, and it doesn’t work for lot of people so you’re not an idiot by any means.

Christmasfairy2020 · 01/07/2021 18:36

I'd have the marina coil inserted ASAP if you don't have an abortion. Or keep the baby

Mymapuddlington · 01/07/2021 18:40

You’d only be a few weeks and I’d definitely look into better contraception or perhaps something more permanent if you don’t want anymore children

Merryoldgoat · 01/07/2021 18:42

When you say ‘on the pill’

Have you missed one?
Been sick?
Had diarrhoea?
Been on antibiotics or other drugs that may have affected its efficacy?

I’m not judging you but if it’s none of those you’re supremely unlucky and I’m very sorry.

If it is remember the above can interfere with the pill and I’m still very sorry because it’s shit and horrible and I’m sorry you are in this position.

YummyButter · 01/07/2021 18:46

I feel so sorry for you. Never had an abortion myself, so can't give much advice tbh.

If you need to have another abortion, don't feel bad ❤ just do what you need to do for yourself and your family. This really sucks, but you'll get through it!

Also, it might be worthwhile having a chat with GP about other types of birth control if the pill isn't working for you Flowers

Badsituations · 01/07/2021 18:48

@Merryoldgoat I take amitriptyline for pain but Google says it doesn’t interact. Other than that, none of those things

OP posts:
YummyButter · 01/07/2021 18:48

Just to add, you're not an idiot at all ❤

ThursdayWeld · 01/07/2021 18:51

Oh man, that is bad luck. Hopefully this termination will be painless.

You're not taking anything like St John's Wort or Valerian, are you? Or anything else herbal?

Coldwine75 · 01/07/2021 18:53

Please dont feel bad and you are not an idiot , things happen, just go to the clinic and take it from there , they wont judge and will be very caring and understanding xx

Merryoldgoat · 01/07/2021 18:55

How utterly shit OP. So sorry you are going through this.

Nocutenamesleft · 01/07/2021 19:03

If your somehow not pregnant

And say it’s left over hormone

Please go to the dr. You’ll need a referral to an endocrine doctor. There are very rare pituitary tumours which can cause the production of HCG. Which is the hormone which picks up on the pregnancy tests. Can be linked to LH. FSH and Thyroid.

Good luck

Cosybelles · 01/07/2021 19:06

You are not an idiot. These things happen. You're not the first person this has happened to and you won't be the last Flowers

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 01/07/2021 19:12

@dworky

Why are you the idiot? Why isn't he taking responsibility for his sperm & not impregnating you?
🙄 neither of them are idiots

Easier for them no doubt, but the choice for surgical should be accessible ....

What are the odds of the pill failing twice?
