Really? Absolutely grotesque behaviour.

England needs its own national anthem I suggest a rejigged 3 Lions, but after they win something, so it could be a long time away!

All countries boo, especially those with long historic conflict both on and off the field.

But when it's England some people will pounce on it to imply that, some how, their nation is better, and manage to ignore that their fans do it too. I suppose it is infrequent for some nations to boo at major tournaments, due to the cunning plan of rarely qualifying.

Never mind, I am sure they will be rejoicing soon enough when England go out, you have to take your pleasures where you can.

We won't even mind, it's water off a ducks back, for WE ARE ENGLAND!

Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

….WTF was all that about?

@ohthatbloodycat

God, give me rugby any day of the week. Football is embarrassingly scummy.
Yep I agree! been to many many Rugby games, including lots of Internationals, never seen any trouble or witnessed any booing of national anthems. We have season tickets for our local Rugby club and it is a very working class area, totally safe to take kids to the games, great atmosphere, everyone is friendly.
Bryonyshcmyony · 02/07/2021 09:55

At least England football is diverse, unlike rugby!

Rockitrosie · 02/07/2021 09:58

This is why our boys played rugby instead of football. I can’t be doing with the thick, hooligan mentality that unfortunately surrounds the game (of course, there are some footie fans who are perfectly well behaved and respectful).

When the ds’s were young dh took them to a club a few times and there were dads squaring up to one another on the pitch! Nothing like this ever happened in the 10 or so years they played rugby.

yes, there are very strict rules against that now.

Bryonyshcmyony · 02/07/2021 10:04

Honestly, players like Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford are fantastic role models. They've overcome so much to get where they are and give a lot back. It would be a shame not to tell your kids about them and admire what they do. That doesn't mean you have to love spitting and booing, just recognise that football isn't always 'scummy'.

DdraigGoch · 02/07/2021 10:07

@CopperBear

Not sure why it's deemed to be perfectly acceptable to boo every anthem until the English do it... I wouldn't boo anyone's anthem and I'm not personally a football fan - but it's very much accepted that football fans will boo during the anthem of the opposition, especially during a home match, especially if it's high stakes and especially if there's a historic rivalry. No one ever seems to complain until it's the English. Next up will be PP complaining about them cheering when a German girl was crying - which is, in reality, "England fans didn't cease cheering after their team won when an insensitive camera man put a German child crying on the big screen".
I didn't know that anyone deemed it acceptable. You'd never see any such disrespect in a rugby match.

An insensitive cameraman employed by UEFA, not the BBC, but yes, exactly.

DdraigGoch · 02/07/2021 10:11

@User135644 the full lyrics have never contained that line. It was sung briefly by a handful of people in 1745.

Bryonyshcmyony · 02/07/2021 10:12

@DdraigGoch apart from when they played the National Anthem at a welsh rugby match!

nyprincess · 02/07/2021 12:00

I think England fans do have a bad reputation, some deserved but they are the minority & most fans are fine. I like Gareth Southgate & would like him to be successful, but as someone from Scotland I can't bear to think England winning, not because they are English, but because the English media would make it unbearable to listen to. Its bad enough watching any match just now, as they always bring up something English. Most people I know feel the same. Nothing against England, just the media. So I am conflicted, good for Southgate, but bad for non English fans.

Bryonyshcmyony · 02/07/2021 12:26

@nyprincess Do you honestly think the Scottish media would have been any different were in Scotland in this position?

SoupDragon · 02/07/2021 12:27

Do the Scottish media not go on and on about Scotland or mention something Scottish then?

nyprincess · 02/07/2021 12:40

I honestly don't think they go on about Scotland as much as the English media does, obviously if Scotland were to get to the finals, quarter, or semis, then yeah I think they would be over the top, only because we never do well. But watching any 2 teams that aren't England, it does get grating how much they go on about England. The same might be true in other nations, but I only can listen to English commentators on the BBC. ITV has Ally McCoist who is annoying.
Scotland fans drive me crazy as well though.

Agree with this. As a Scot who lived in England for many years and have loads of English friends I don’t grudge them their celebration or their win

But…. It is the media that gets on the non-English countries nerves. 1966 mentioned every two minutes, how a certain result will be good for England before they have even qualified for that round, how the English result is mentioned during another game

It does grate and no I don’t believe Scots or Welsh media would go on about their country during other games.

And before any comments come we are not sore losers, we know our limits and don’t have arrogance around our results (good or bad).

Anyway my focus right now is on the tennis, not football, and supporting Andy Murray - who funnily enough is always noted as being British when he is winning and Scottish when he loses by the media - go figure Hmm

araiwa · 02/07/2021 13:05

To be fair it's difficult to talk about Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish success on the football field

🤣
nyprincess · 02/07/2021 13:17

Or any sporting field, for Scotland anyway, with the exception of Andy Murray & tennis.
We know we are rubbish though Wink

Bryonyshcmyony · 02/07/2021 13:34

You have some good athletes!

Lol, and not just people from non English countries. It does get very grating. Grin

SaskiaRembrandt · 02/07/2021 14:05

@candyflossss

Whilst I don't agree with any national anthems being booed, I think it is over the top to bang on about just the england fans and essentially how awful they are in comparison to everyone else after the racial abuse that players like raheem sterling received at the hands of fans from other countries.

To the point where the games were nearly stopped and there had to be netting over where the fans sat so they couldn't scale/throw anything over the barriers.

I agree. I think booing a song pales into insignificance in comparison to that.
usernameabc123 · 02/07/2021 14:13

It's common at sporting events OP.

For those saying it's only English fans who do it, get a life.

SaskiaRembrandt · 02/07/2021 14:14

@spanielstail

Working class sport = working class behaviour. It's childlike and disrespectful and shows a lack of intelligence and maturity.
I'd guess this goady fucker individual thinks the Bullingdon Club is actually a social club for miners. Darts on a Tuesday, with a punch-up after the bingo.
Hoppinggreen · 02/07/2021 14:15

@x2boys

Well the German fans didn't exactly cover themselves in glory when, they were Booing when England scored.
It’s not unusual to boo when the opposing team scores at football matches at any level.
