Booing the German anthem

Really? Absolutely grotesque behaviour.

OP posts:
vinicunca · 01/07/2021 14:10

... And most certainly not at the polo!

Brefugee · 01/07/2021 14:11

Well the German fans didn't exactly cover themselves in glory when, they were Booing when England scored

Don't be daft. It's normal to boo stuff the other team do - especially scoring against you.

Boing a national anthem is shit but it's crept in and i guess we'll learn to live with it (FWIW German fans soundly booed the Hungarian anthem the other day)

The little girl? Was pathetic. Kids have always been off limits for that kind of abuse and it was really not on. (what happened on social media was really out of order). Taking the piss out of crying adults? Absolutely.

sfeirical · 01/07/2021 14:30

@SecondRow

sfeirical Probably not every time they play Hungary, though? The Orban situation put a particular slant on that match this year.

Most matches there will always be a particular group that will boo any national anthem.

I think Brits like to believe we are all quite civilised over here, but we have football hooligans here too.

In every country there will be a group who behave this way.

It wasn't all the England fans booing the German national anthem, and it wasn't all the German fans booing the Hungarian national anthem. It's always the same group of people who unfortunately make the whole bunch look bad.

Majority of people I watched the match with heard the booing but we weren't disgusted by it, unfortunately it's par for the course with these things, and we know all countries are capable of this behaviour.

Yolanda524 · 01/07/2021 14:38

Another reason why I can’t stand watching football. Unfortunately my girls are getting swept up in the hype of it all but I can’t believe anyone defends booing a national anthem, it is a disgrace.
I love watching sports in general but find football culture here quite toxic. I’m just hoping England lose on Saturday so I don’t have to withstand all the hype of them in the finals.

TheMarzipanDildo · 01/07/2021 14:43

@spanielstail

Working class sport = working class behaviour. It's childlike and disrespectful and shows a lack of intelligence and maturity.
Hmm

Members of the upper and middle classes are invariably paragons of virtue, however.

nicecoffeecup · 01/07/2021 14:48

A minority of our football have a really really bad reputation, and it is very well deserved, as with the Russians.

I've been places where a few international teams were playing and it's often to pleasure to see the Italian, Spanish, Irish, German, etc supporters. Most our are fans as OK too, but the English football fan reputation is well deserved.

Bryonyshcmyony · 01/07/2021 14:52

Oh fgs. Some people are just determined to prove how much they hate football.

How joyless and miserable.

That's a really unfortunate attitude - not all football fans are like this.

I love football for so many reasons - the atmosphere, the fact it brings people together, the actual sport itself of course, the pride I feel when my team wins...it's great!

yes a small minority let themselves down but it's not the majority.

It'll be amazing if England win and a much needed lift for a lot of people after the last year.

Don't be so miserable!

AnneElliott · 01/07/2021 15:06

I didn't watch the game but I know it's not only England fans that boo anthems.

And wtf about working class behaviour! I'm working class and I don't behave like that - nor does anyone else I know. A small minority ruin it for everyone - but they should be clamped down on although UK football policing is stricter than almost anywhere. We actually have specific orders that bans hooligans form going abroad to matches.

And having been at quite a few policing operations at football matches, a lot of those arrested for violence would be considered middle class - some men just like causing trouble.

Goodness does Prince William realise he's actually working class?

Yup. And all the whataboutery posted by some people here. If you aren't appalled by this you are part of the problem, period.

i hoped they'd lose on Tuesday, i hate football, it brings out all that is bad about the british in a way no other sport does - today i was shown a meme of that poor poor germany girl being cuddled by saville, when i told the guy who showed it to me "how would you like it if it were your daughter?" he replied "oh don't be so miserable"

in all other sports, i very passionate about us winning, so its not an anti british thing.

And others seem determined to give them even more reason to.

I don't think it is the fact people don't find it distasteful, it is the notion that it is only the England fans or the fact that it is a new concept.

This sort of thing has been commonplace for a long time and it isn't the majority, fortunately, who act like total goons. There are idiots in every walk of life.

JudgeJ · 01/07/2021 15:16

@Youdiditanyway

Bad taste but I wouldn’t expect anything more from England fans.
What an idiotic comment, even by MN standards! I really think that people have such little, UK-centric minds. Have they never heard the Australians ? D they not think it will happen on Saturday night, especially from the Ukraine fans? Do grow up dear.
ViciousJackdaw · 01/07/2021 15:16

Being a working class scumbag, I love footy. It's such a shame that some people feel joining in with the hope and excitement (and let's face it, it's exactly what this country needs right now) is beneath them.

Even if you detest the game and think we're all neanderthals, surely you'd like to see Marcus Rashford lift that cup? After all he's done for others, I'd love him to have some personal/professional joy.

candyflossss · 01/07/2021 15:17

@thecatsatonthewall It really isn't every football fan though. it is a shame a few morons ruin it for everyone else but not all of us who are passionate about the sport deserve the bad reputation and negativity that is spouted on here.

As for any memes or pictures of crying children, that of course is totally below the belt. Like I said some people are morons.

SlipperyDippery · 01/07/2021 15:17

It’s isn’t “whataboutery” to challenge the stereotypes of England fans on this thread alongside condemning the booing.

Whataboutery is where you avoid engaging with the issue by raising another. It’s not where you engage with the issue at hand but point out where people are talking crap by singling out one group.

JudgeJ · 01/07/2021 15:18

@SlipperyDippery

Look at the full lyrics of GSTQ

Just did and I can’t see anything about crushing Scotland. I also don’t imagine the majority of football fans are bothered about the third verse of GSTQ, they just don’t like England.

There's a verse about General Wade that is about the Scots.
JudgeJ · 01/07/2021 15:21

@Notstrongandstable

English football fans are an abomination..at least the ones who go to the matches are. They are an embarrassment
Is it acceptable to make unsubstantiated slurs against a nationality or is it just allowed against England? It's fools like those who make such comments that act as recruiting sergeants for the National Front etc., maybe that's their aim.

massive generalisation there.
DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 01/07/2021 15:35

Scotland have been fined before for booing of GSTQ. So how come they don’t all get fined when they do it? Or is that because they were both home nations and it was the FAs decision?
