Really? Absolutely grotesque behaviour.

@Orf1abc

the racial abuse that players like raheem sterling received at the hands of fans from other countries.

The amount of racial abuse Sterling gets from so called England supporters is abhorrent.

I love football, but it has changed so much since I was a season ticket holder. People are less interested in the game, and more about berating and abusing both players and opposition supporters, basically anyone that is not a white male. Sign of the times I'm afraid.

of course it is.

I am pointing out that it seems that English fans get the worse rap when there are fans across ALL countries that behave awfully.

And England booing Germanys national anthem is poor form in my opinion but I'm not going to pretend that it isn't commonplace across the board.

SecondRow · 01/07/2021 13:01

I assume there were many more England fans than Germans in Wembley, too. Could the Germans even have made a significant amount of noise?

TillyTottenham · 01/07/2021 13:02

It's just a bit of fun. Football fans get it.

BarbarianMum · 01/07/2021 13:03

I dont see how booing a goal can be equated to booing a national anthem tbh.

I'm assuming you were a STH in the 1960s?

The 70s, 80s and early 90s "fans" weren't exactly a paragon of virtue.

spanielstail · 01/07/2021 13:13

Working class sport = working class behaviour. It's childlike and disrespectful and shows a lack of intelligence and maturity.

vinicunca · 01/07/2021 13:15

I don’t think it is “just a bit of fun” and I don’t want to “get it.”

To be honest, Scottish supporters are just as bad and it’s because, in both cases, there is a minority of thugs. But they are thugs that get themselves noticed, sadly, because they are so disgusting.

The impact of the thug mentality in football puts the vast majority off supporting the game, full stop.

If MN is anything to go by, It’s interesting that there hasn’t been one thread started on here to the effect of, “Well done England,” “I’m proud of the England team...” etc etc. This is because, any hint of English patriotism has become so closely associated with a thug mentality, the vast majority of normal people steer well clear of it. Instead, the post-match threads were about, “Wasn’t the commentary crap,” or “Why was Prince George in a suit,” or “why were footballers spitting - its disgusting.” Not one, “Well done England” and I think this is very telling actually. You know full-well if Scotland or Wales had won, or even drew, there would have been a whole flurry “I’m proud to be Welsh / Scottish threads.”

Basically, thugs have ruined the game. They are like a sickness in society. The mentality is hideous. People are scared of it and it has given football (or sport in general) such negative connotations that nobody reasonably sane would want to fly England flags or sing the national anthem. The thugs are a disgrace and there is no excuse for booing anyone or anything in any match.

Are you equating childlike and disrespectful behaviour and lack of intelligence/maturity with being working class? Because I cannot see any other way to read your post

Really? I'm 48. There was no way you would see a Black fan walking into a football match, or any children in the 70's and 80's. Probably even some stadiums in the 90's. If you lived anywhere near Millwall Stadium as I did, you'd stay well clear of football fans going to ir coming out of a game.
Viviennemary · 01/07/2021 13:21

Lets not get too excited. They've only won a game not the whole thing. I don't like football. I don't like tennis either. It's nothing to do with being a thug or not being a thug. Honestly some folk.

Notreallyhappy · 01/07/2021 13:23

What looptheloop said...when will England have an anthem of its own..

Booing happens at most sporting events...

Aah the usual MN snobbery about football. I'd rather be working class and be accused of 'working class behaviour' than be as far up my own arse as you.

Mumsnet isn't representative of the country,it's the same after any football tournament on here thread after thread of people falling over themselves to say how much they hate football In real life everyone I know was delighted England won,I'm no football fan, don't follow ateam etc ,but do enjoy ,the Euros ,world cup etc
cricketmum84 · 01/07/2021 13:26

Yep I was really disappointed too :(

Grin I love MN
sfeirical · 01/07/2021 13:27

@x2boys

Well the German fans didn't exactly cover themselves in glory when, they were Booing when England scored.

German here! The German fans boo'd the Hungarian national anthem. It happens all the time. In the past they've boo'd the English national anthem.

It's embarrassing, absolutely. But it happens all the time, it's not just the England fans doing it. Football brings out the worst in some people (men).

ladygindiva · 01/07/2021 13:29

@looptheloopinahulahoop

It is horrible to boo another country's national anthem.

But it's also ridiculous that the ENGLAND team uses the BRITISH national anthem. I don't understand why none of the team has said anything about it. Completely inappropriate.

I'm always saying this too!
Ylvamoon · 01/07/2021 13:32

OP, just get a life!
You'll soon be indifferent to the abomination that is a certain Football Fan. (I think every "Football Carzy Nation" has them.)

derxa · 01/07/2021 13:32

Mumsnet isn't representative of the country,it's the same after any football tournament on here thread after thread of people falling over themselves to say how much they hate football That's about the height of it

smudgemylife · 01/07/2021 13:35

@spanielstail you're obviously on the wind up, right? Hmm

SecondRow · 01/07/2021 13:43

sfeirical Probably not every time they play Hungary, though? The Orban situation put a particular slant on that match this year.

UrAWizHarry · 01/07/2021 13:45

Bad taste but I wouldn’t expect anything more from England football fans.

Germany fans booed a goal? That makes no sense. How would they even know, given you wouldn't hear it over the cheers.

Working class sport = working class behaviour. It's childlike and disrespectful and shows a lack of intelligence and maturity.
Which is why you don't get that kind of behaviour at the opera.
BarbarianMum · 01/07/2021 14:08

@User135644 no idea. I was responding to a poster above.
