Just call her by her name?!

FF7RGEEK · 29/06/2021 17:58

I have 4 DD, my youngest is 1 next month.
My MIL won't use her name, just calls her baby she says it is impossible to pronounce (it isn't) in the beginning she would try to say her name and call her something not even remotely similar to her name.
She now has other family members doing the same and they won't use her name either, even though they did to begin with.
DH, tells her all the time that she is being silly and to just use her name, she will then just fall out with us.
I know her name is unusual but it is beautiful (in our opinion) am I being unreasonable to tell her she has to use her name?

Not at all difficult to pronounce, especially when you've told her the correct pronunciation!
Also wondering if it's bad that I knew it was FF7 straight after I read the name, and the Eris your son was talking about (I'm guessing) is Eris Morn? I play too many games. 🙈

GrandmasCat · 29/06/2021 20:31

She won't call her baby forever. You can't dictate what she calls her

Grin My little sister is still called “the baby” by all the extended family. She will be 50 this year.

She took to correct everyone and ask for her actual name to be used when she started secondary school. It didn’t work.

Tubbytele · 29/06/2021 20:31

Also we named our son from Devil May Cry and people found that unusual too

Unihorn · 29/06/2021 20:36

@KingdomScrolls

I'm surprised your daughter doesn't correct her, DS is only 2 but even if you say to him oh you're lovely or my grandma said to him you're a little smasher, he replies no I'm not a smasher (etc) I'm just DSName 😁
Well she's only 11 months old so it would be a bit of a shock I imagine!
Ellpellwood · 29/06/2021 20:39

For those asking I assumed FF7R stood for Final Fantasy 7 Remake and I assumed it was unlikely to be Tifa. Or Yuffie.

ignatiusjreilly · 29/06/2021 20:41

@FF7RGEEK Thanks for the info. I thought about Aeris for our daughter but DH vetoed it. I'm very envious that you have a fellow FF fan for a husband!

It's lovely to see so many people on this thread appreciating the name Aerith!

FF7RGEEK · 29/06/2021 20:42

My 11yr olds middle name is tifa 🤣

OP posts:
Ellpellwood · 29/06/2021 20:43

It's ok as a middle! But I just can't imagine Tifa Jane Smith on her first day at school Grin

Ellpellwood · 29/06/2021 20:44

Also, less likely to be mispronounced by your MiL.

ShitPoetryClub · 29/06/2021 20:44

@Pinkypink

Could you perhaps refer to mil in a slightly altered way? Grandmuff Or Grandminge

And teach the baby to do the same obv
Just something subtle but offensive

🤣🤣🤣
fellrunner85 · 29/06/2021 20:45

Sephiroth for a DS?!
And who was the big guy with the gun on his arm?!

massiveportion · 29/06/2021 20:45

A true old school fan would have gone for Aeris though 😉

youvegottenminuteslynn · 29/06/2021 20:46

@lolacola77

It's not a great name tbh...she's going to spend her life spelling it, repeating it to people and probably gating you for giving it to her!
I can't imagine being so nasty as to write this to someone about their child. How embarrassing for you.
ignatiusjreilly · 29/06/2021 20:47

@fellrunner85 That was Barret!

I used to think Selphie was a cute name but that wouldn't work well these days Grin

Teaandtoastedbiscuits · 29/06/2021 20:49

Start calling her Mil and refer to her as the outlaw. Tell her you keep forgetting her name

Badabingbadabum · 29/06/2021 20:50

My dm did this. Hated dd1s name, sent me an email telling me she was disappointed in me, I'll regret it, called dd all sorts of other names instead. Eventually she just started using dds name and I expect she feels very silly about it now. Dds name is Violet. In no way out there.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 29/06/2021 20:51

She doesn't find it hard to pronounce, she just doesn't like it and this is her way of making it known. Constantly.

What a dick.

I puzzled over Selphie for a couple of minutes and then laughed way too hard when I got the selfie connection!!
Although can you imagine calling your child Squall??!!

Badabingbadabum · 29/06/2021 20:56

I think Aerith is lovely. Really nice sound to it.

Marshmallow91 · 29/06/2021 20:58

My good friend has a child called lynk. He's a beautiful little soul.

People are just arses.

My surname has dumbfounded people for my entire life. If i could learn it at 5 years old then people who care will make an effort.

If they won't, then they can fuck off.

GameSetMatch · 29/06/2021 21:03

Has your MIL got a strong northern accent? I like the name but when I say it, it sounds like I’m saying ‘Eris’ as in the planet) but with a lisp. 😂

Notwavingbutdrowing3 · 29/06/2021 21:06

I can just picture the next few months until you retrain MIL & other family members (who started copying MIL calling her Baby instead now too!)

Yes please Pop over then, Old Lady Grin

Want a cup of tea Middle Aged Aunt... ?

It'd be a bit awkward if they really had forgotten how to pronounce her name tho!

Is this any help? .,, to tell MIL It's like Gareth but with Air instead of Ga ...

ARealTrip · 29/06/2021 21:06

Beautiful name, easy to pronounce and she’s just doing it on purpose to get a reaction as she personally doesn’t like the name.
Agree with calling her old lady.
Keep falling out with her.
Tell her you will no longer see her if she calls your DD baby, as it will start to affect her.
Call out every relative that does it in front of others.

CathyorClaire · 29/06/2021 21:07

Lord above.

I got it right from your post. It's a lovely name.

MIL is either an illiterate arse or just a plain one.

ARealTrip · 29/06/2021 21:08

I would ignore my DM if she told me she was disspaointed in me for naming my child and happily cut off contact. That’s awful.
