Just call her by her name?!

FF7RGEEK · 29/06/2021 17:58

I have 4 DD, my youngest is 1 next month.
My MIL won't use her name, just calls her baby she says it is impossible to pronounce (it isn't) in the beginning she would try to say her name and call her something not even remotely similar to her name.
She now has other family members doing the same and they won't use her name either, even though they did to begin with.
DH, tells her all the time that she is being silly and to just use her name, she will then just fall out with us.
I know her name is unusual but it is beautiful (in our opinion) am I being unreasonable to tell her she has to use her name?

Could you perhaps refer to mil in a slightly altered way?
Grandmuff
Or
Grandminge

And teach the baby to do the same obv
Just something subtle but offensive

saraclara · 29/06/2021 19:57

I used to teach in a very multi ethnic town. One of my colleagues consistently pronounced her pupils' names incorrectly, and when I quietly corrected her about one child, she just said with a smirk "well that's too hard for me to say so I'll say it my own way"

None of the names were too hard to say. She was just a cow. Fortunately she got suspended for another reason and was never seen again.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 29/06/2021 19:57

I've seen it written down but didn't know before this thread how to pronounce it. It's a really pretty name and not hard to say, mil is being a dick

Thewinterofdiscontent · 29/06/2021 20:01

Agree with PPs that as soon as Aerith can talk teach her to call grandma "old lady". "Oh no I'm sorry but little Aerith is struggling to pronounce Grandma!"

But that’s the MIL point made. Your daughter will call her Gran whatever she wants. No one will be offended.
It’s not as if the Gran s mis pronouncing it. She just hates it and calls her grandchild a nickname.
Every thread on names on here normally has people saying “no one owns a name”. Therefore people can actually call you what they like by that logic surely?

ignatiusjreilly · 29/06/2021 20:02

FF7 fan here too! She was called Aeris in my version of the game though.

BoringBettie · 29/06/2021 20:07

Love it - fits your username perfectly too!

SpanielRadcliffe · 29/06/2021 20:08

Teach your youngest—when she learns to speak—how to say “My name isn’t Baby, it’s xxxxx.”

percheron67 · 29/06/2021 20:08

She can star in the remake of Dirty Dancing.

FF7RGEEK · 29/06/2021 20:11

ignatiusjreilly you will have played the originally dubbed version then. Back in 1997, that was released for Europe but it later in an update got corrected to Aerith, which comes from the name aerisu which means earth. You can see how they made that mistake originally 😂

Is it Rumpelstiltskin?

AliceLivesHere · 29/06/2021 20:13

What's FF7 and what is the character like called by the name?

youngandbroken · 29/06/2021 20:15

It is no harder to say than Erin (it's very similar in fact) and nobody would claim that was impossible to pronounce Hmm regardless it is her name and refusing to even try and pronounce it correctly is just disgustingly rude. You wouldn't do it to an adult so why do it to a baby, I think any so called adult who can't even show enough respect to use the babies name needs to do some serious self reflection.

romdowa · 29/06/2021 20:15

Aerith seems pretty simple to pronounce 🙄🙄 she would never cope being my mil. I have a huge love of traditional Irish names , spelled the irish way 😅🤣🤣

SpanielRadcliffe · 29/06/2021 20:16

Absolutely NOT endorsing the repulsive age-ism on this thread by the way, e.g.:

Cricketmum84: Agree with PPs that as soon as Aerith can talk teach her to call grandma "old lady". "Oh no I'm sorry but little Aerith is struggling to pronounce Grandma!"

The grandma is wrong, but it has nothing to do with age.

Grognonne · 29/06/2021 20:20

Try pointing on a map to Erith in Kent and ask her how she’d pronounce that!! She’s being ridiculous, it’s not a difficult name to say.

diamondpony80 · 29/06/2021 20:21

Ive never heard that name, I really like it though. It’s completely unreasonable for anyone to say they couldn’t pronounce it.

vinicunca · 29/06/2021 20:21

I know it’s not the same spelling, but isn’t there a town called Erith (possibly in Essex or Kent)? Take her there for the day and she if she can pronounce where she’s going.

sleepismyhobby · 29/06/2021 20:23

It's very easy to pronounce , very beautiful name as well. Mil is being really rude by not using her name how would mil like it if no one called her by her name?
My mum didn't like my youngest ds name she never said so but screwed her nose up when I said what his name was

KingdomScrolls · 29/06/2021 20:25

I'm surprised your daughter doesn't correct her, DS is only 2 but even if you say to him oh you're lovely or my grandma said to him you're a little smasher, he replies no I'm not a smasher (etc) I'm just DSName 😁

lolacola77 · 29/06/2021 20:26

It's not a great name tbh...she's going to spend her life spelling it, repeating it to people and probably gating you for giving it to her!

babbaloushka · 29/06/2021 20:29

Beautiful name and really not that hard to pronounce, I was expecting something 6 syllables. IMO it's your DH's job to correct.

CagneyNYPD · 29/06/2021 20:29

My first thought was that's a lovely name but it does remind me of Erith. If you're from the SE, you will probably know Erith as not a particularly pretty town. Perhaps your MIL hear "Aerith" but thinks "Erith".

Or perhaps she has issues with your DD being named after a character in a video game. Either way she is being rude and really should use your DD's name correctly.

Apologies to any Mumsnetters from Erith.

DizzySquirrel90 · 29/06/2021 20:29

She's being rude

CagneyNYPD · 29/06/2021 20:30

oh and Aerith really isn't tricky to pronounce, as many have said.

Tubbytele · 29/06/2021 20:30

Another FF fan here!
