Just call her by her name?!

FF7RGEEK · 29/06/2021 17:58

I have 4 DD, my youngest is 1 next month.
My MIL won't use her name, just calls her baby she says it is impossible to pronounce (it isn't) in the beginning she would try to say her name and call her something not even remotely similar to her name.
She now has other family members doing the same and they won't use her name either, even though they did to begin with.
DH, tells her all the time that she is being silly and to just use her name, she will then just fall out with us.
I know her name is unusual but it is beautiful (in our opinion) am I being unreasonable to tell her she has to use her name?

I've not heard the name before but after reading your first post, I thought it was going to be something that you pronounce differently to what if looks like. You say it how it's spelt. Easy. Your MIL is rude. I think it's probably snobbery about naiming your DD after a video game and probably because the name seems made-up to your MIL.

goddessofmischief · 29/06/2021 22:08

It's a lovely name. I know of a child named after a pokemon. Of the two, yours is lovely and lesser known Grin

She is an arse at times, DH and I have been together 20 years this November, married 15 years in February. She still gets in my nerves, and I think she died it to about me sometimes.
She has told me before I'm not the type of DIL she wanted, I'm a big games geek (like DH) I don't do the whole girly stuff except for special occasions. I didn't want a big wedding (I'm an only child so not many family to attend, both parents were passed before I got married) which caused terrible arguments, she even told DH not to go through with it!
I still try to get along for DH and DD's sake, but sometimes I really want to tell her where to go.
DH and I are the only ones to give her biological grandchildren you would think she would be grateful. As her middle son is locked up, and has 3 grown up step kids, and her youngest who is nearly 30 still lives at home, has no job and no prospects!
Sorry for ranting she just aggravates me

@leli

Who names a child after a video game? Maybe that's what MIL is not so subtly trying to express.
Why not? Aerith sounds pretty, isn't hard to pronounce or work out from the spelling, isn't stupid or overly pigeonholey (I'm looking at you, girl from my high school who has named her daughter Dancer).

No weirder than using a name from a beloved book, is it?

Dixiechickonhols · 29/06/2021 22:13

Your DH needs to have another word. If she falls out she looks silly. It’s a pretty name that is pronounced as it’s written. I’d have guessed it was Welsh.
Alternatively agree a form of words you’ll all use (older children included) so if she says baby you all reply - you could even sing it - ‘no one puts baby in the corner old lady!’ or whatever you like best. I bet a few days of that she’d soon get message (bonus points for a little dance you all do)

Minniem2020 · 29/06/2021 22:16

@AndAllOurYesterdays. Thank you for reminding me of this, love it Grin

FF7RGEEK · 29/06/2021 22:17

glassonthelawn
I'm not shortening it for others if it gets shortened at school then so be it.
Why is Manning a child after a video game common?

Dixiechickonhols · 29/06/2021 22:17

Lots of people name children after characters in books, songs or film characters a video game is no different. And I’m not a gamer.

supersop60 · 29/06/2021 22:18

@Dddccc

Funny as aerith translated is aeris neither are a good choice for a child just because you love final fantasy hopefully she won't get bullied as she grows up
What nonsense.
Lalliella · 29/06/2021 22:22

It’s a beautiful name. It’s not like you called her Pac-Man! Are there any ancient horrible video game character names you could give to MIL as a nickname?

cricketmum84 · 29/06/2021 22:24

@goddessofmischief

It's a lovely name. I know of a child named after a pokemon. Of the two, yours is lovely and lesser known Grin
Pleeeeeease tell me the child is named pikachu....
Badabingbadabum · 29/06/2021 22:27

48Cherrysoup if your mate's name begins with K, then no. My post is potentially outing to anyone who knows me but having read a lot of these 'dm, mil won't say dc's name' threads over the years I figured I'd blend into the background, even with putting the name! Family members getting annoyed about names happens so often.

Hollywolly1 · 29/06/2021 22:34

I think your MIL doesn't approve of the name and thats why she won't use it and has all the other sheep following her,its just utterly ridiculous.
You picked the name and you think it's beautiful but I think if you don't nip this in the bud right now your baby could we be known as baby all her life,has happened so often before

queennotififi · 29/06/2021 22:39

What a lovely name. :)

Borderterrierpuppy · 29/06/2021 22:45

It’s gorgeous ignore the idiots.

SomethingOnce · 29/06/2021 22:52

Reminds me of that place in south-east London/Kent...

Sarahzb · 29/06/2021 22:58

Nothing remotely difficult about this except her reaction and her (successful) attempt to undermine you. Awful old bag, ooh can I say that?

LovePoppy · 29/06/2021 23:00

So?
Let her fall out with you

lardylegs123 · 29/06/2021 23:01

She's being out of order, OP Thanks

SengaMac · 29/06/2021 23:17

I'm going to call her old woman and go from there.
Grin Good idea!

MrMeSeeks · 29/06/2021 23:19

Sorry would not have guessed the name at all looking at it ( struggling even now i’ve been told how to say it!), don’t think it’s good.
It’s not what i like though…if you’re happy that’s what matters!

DeflatedGinDrinker · 29/06/2021 23:22

My nephews 1 and I still call him the baby. Bit of a nessa vibe.

BiBabbles · 29/06/2021 23:23

@GameSetMatch

Has your MIL got a strong northern accent? I like the name but when I say it, it sounds like I’m saying ‘Eris’ as in the planet) but with a lisp. 😂
I was thinking that. There were many names I crossed off the list because they sounded very different in some dialects in the family -- very few names with th worked well between all of us.
Zwellers · 29/06/2021 23:28

You named your child after Japanese computer game. Seriously (assuming you are not japanese) While your mil is being unreasonable I don't think that's a name your daughter will thank you for at school. Awful.

Lillyhatesjaz · 29/06/2021 23:37

I think it's a lovely name and having played the game I don't see how it's different from naming her after a book character as the game is like a story and the character is a beautiful girl.
