Posting here for traffic.

Woke up yesterday with a migraine with aura which I sometimes I get, had a pounding headache all day.

This morning woke up with a pounding headache again and it's making me feel I'll. I took paracetamol and it's not helping.

Please share with me your migraine remedies. My daughters are on school holidays now and I have to entertain them so this couldn't of come at a worse time.

Thank you in advance.

Sorry for the typos. It's hurting to look at my phone screen.

Sumatriptan is the only thing that helps mine.

PissedOffAgain · 29/06/2021 11:54

Another vote for Sumatriptan. Life changing

Rqoki · 29/06/2021 11:57

Echoing sumatriptan.

I've found soluble asparin in a full fat coke and some really salty food and an ice pack on my head can help ease it (not get rid of) when I don't have sumpatripitan

Awarsewolf · 29/06/2021 11:57

Triptans. Phone your GP and get some prescribed. If you struggle to swallow with the sickness, there are sublingual triptans (rizatriptan I think)! Get the medicine and then keep a stash of a few in your car, home and work :)

SoddingWeddings · 29/06/2021 11:59

You need a triptan. Your GP prescribes them.

You can buy sumatriptan over the counter in a pharmacy, but some pharmacists will only sell it to you if you've used it before, so better to contact your GP.

And yes, a migraine does warrant a same day appointment.

Tradgarden · 29/06/2021 11:59

Triptans.
I also take magnesium daily and the frequency has reduced.
Good luck, they are awful.

TillyTopper · 29/06/2021 12:01

I use a Cefaly device here. I also take ibruprofen and paracetamol together. I keep quite a strict routine with bedtime and waking up (too much/too little sleep can trigger it). Also drink plenty of water as that can help too. I found Sumatriptan didn't work for me. Others have also found botox a good remedy if you can pinpoint the spot where the migraine occurs.

This won’t be enough for today but may help next time.

Also, DM could tell the weather by her migraines. Changing air pressure, spring clouds etc would distress her terribly.

Paracetamol won't work, you need something stronger. Codein helps with mine. I'm on daily magnesium, coenzyme Q10 and propanol to reduce frequency. It's been life changing. See a specialist to get prescribed proper medication.

thecatsthecats · 29/06/2021 12:06

Alcohol.

I have a thumping three weeker once, and when it got to my friend's thirtieth, I was sick to death of it ruining things, and just went out for a proper night out. Killed it dead.

More therapeutically, if you have difficulty getting to the GP, ice during the day, then a heat pad at night is very effective. My GP ALWAYS makes me go for an eye test before prescribing migraine meds, and in twenty years of having migraines, all it means is a two week delay to getting prescribed.

I also went for a massage once and told the masseuse that I had a migraine, and he did a special face and jaw massage targeting the nerves that affect migraines. I need to learn how to do it myself!

Wrotten · 29/06/2021 12:07

Cold on your head. Frozen peas or something.

2andahalfpints · 29/06/2021 12:08

Take paracetamol and ibuprofen together for me and if you can lay in a dark quiet room with a cold wet flannel over your eyes and head.

My doc put me on propranolol a couple of years back and it has been genuinely life changing they have reduced so much so do visit the doctor

LizJamIsFab · 29/06/2021 12:09

Aspirin 900mg and buccastem anti sickness tablet together asap - have to keep them about my person
(As long as you don’t have stomach ulcers/heartburn)

A headache diary to work out the triggers

I've been debating getting a cefaly for a couple of years, has it helped a lot?
Twinkie01 · 29/06/2021 12:09

You can get triptans in wafer form which dissolve under your tongue or nasal sprays which act faster than tablet form.

I had my daish (??) pierced 8 years ago after suffering from Femoral Hemiplegic migraines for years, often mistaken for strokes and have had auras since but no pain. I thought it was a bit woo woo when someone advised it but it bloody worked!

Reloxa · 29/06/2021 12:32

Another vote for sumatriptan, they are the only thing that works for me. I get them over the counter at Boots, have never had a prescription so it's worth asking, given how hard it is to get GP appointments.

Watching as I am currently laid in bed with a banging headache since yesterday. Hope you feel better soon @Sunshine4you
TheGoogleMum · 29/06/2021 12:44

I get migraines a lot so following with interest! I take a triptan sometimes but they are helping less and mostly make me sleepy so not useful to take at work

RustyFig · 29/06/2021 12:50

Yes to triptans, specifically Zolmitriptan in my case (I get mine on prescription- can you get them over the counter?? I didn't know that)

Otherwise ibuprofen lysine is second best and you can definitely just buy that from a chemist or supermarket..

unstabletoddler · 29/06/2021 12:54

Aspirin immediately if you have it around, 900mg.

Propranolol if you can get jt prescribed.

TwoLeftElbows · 29/06/2021 12:55

Longer term reducing caffeine seems to have helped mine a lot. And sumatriptan. Substantial sleep is the only thing that really conquers it though - like 4 hours in the middle of the day. I find "migraine sleep" doesn't stop me sleeping at night.

Migraleve is not as good as triptans but it's a lot better than paracetamol alone.

SoddingWeddings · 29/06/2021 12:56

You can only get sumatriptan over the counter, none of the others (there are 7 varieties).

I'm a chronic migraine sufferer, up to 27 days a month, so I consider myself a bit of an expert in medication, treatment options and holistic therapies 😂

I'm now on the anti-CGRP injection, Ajovy, after multiple treatment failures. This thing has changed my life. I've had 2 migraines in 7 weeks instead of my usual 28+ attacks. Unreal.

LadyPenelope68 · 29/06/2021 12:58

Sumatriptan, absolute life changer for me.

Trumpspeach · 29/06/2021 13:03

Sumitriptan is the only thing that will definitely kill my migraines, but the side effects are pretty awful too, in my experience.
Am interested in others' advice as my migraines have ramped up recently. i suspect it's the menopause (I'm 49)
Good luck with finding something effective, OP. Migraines are the utter work of the Devil.
