Posting here for traffic.

Woke up yesterday with a migraine with aura which I sometimes I get, had a pounding headache all day.

This morning woke up with a pounding headache again and it's making me feel I'll. I took paracetamol and it's not helping.

Please share with me your migraine remedies. My daughters are on school holidays now and I have to entertain them so this couldn't of come at a worse time.

Thank you in advance.

Aspirin (900mg) can help massively if you can’t get to a chemist or doctors then migraleve if you can get to a chemist and most effective are triptans from GP

I have a few migraines a year that give me such head pain that I'm sick unless I'm in a pitch black room so I'm watching this thread with interest. I've never been to gp as they are so infrequent. No pain meds seem to touch mine, if I can even keep them down!

Dodie66 · 29/06/2021 13:33

Cocodamol and a cup of caffiene tea or coffee. Caffiene recommended as it constricts the blood vessels during the headache

Onlyfoolsandfathers · 29/06/2021 13:40

Coke, migard, and 4head gel. And codeine.

Budgetating · 29/06/2021 13:40

I also went for a massage once and told the masseuse that I had a migraine, and he did a special face and jaw massage targeting the nerves that affect migraines. I need to learn how to do it myself!

I use migraleve, and often lie in the bed, cold flannel on my forehead

Percivalthebabyspider · 29/06/2021 14:28

Sumitriptan is the only thing that works for me once it’s taken hold. Cold flannel and a dark room, sleep it off.

I’ve gone dairy and sugar free and have gone from 4/5 a month to none.

I hope it’s gone quickly, they are awful.

Won’t help now, but for anyone suffering with constant headaches then see if your NHS authority offers a GammaCore device, they were approved for use by the NHS back in April.
Unfortunately my NHS authority doesn’t offer them yet, but are planning to.

Dh got some proper first aid kits from Boots. Inside was an ice pack. Crunch the pack to activate.. Oh my days!! Suffered for over 35 years... I take nasal sprays instead of tablets and they work but those ice packs are truly magnificent! Apparently cold shrinks the capillaries that swell when we get a migraine... Bloody bliss op.. You can buy them online or instore.. About 3 quid.

I'm a chronic migraine sufferer (this weather is an awful trigger!) and this is what works for me. It's a combination of advice from my neurologist and things I've tried over the years:

900mg of aspirin or 600mg of ibuprofen - as a one off dose
A triptan - you can buy sumatriptan otc
Down with a big glass of water.
Sip a full fat coke - I know coffee works for some but I don't drink that or regular tea.
White tiger balm and ice packs

Providora · 29/06/2021 14:43

I haven't had my monthly migraine since I stopped taking the birth control pill at the start of this year.

StormBaby · 29/06/2021 14:45

Had migraines from age 13 to age 35, when I got my daith piercing done. Not had one in the 7 years since

So I've just watched the video of how Cefaly works, link per @TillyTopper above, thanks

The price is way out of my league, and I was wondering, it appears to be just a TENS machine with a different/particular shape - I've already got a bog standard TENS machine which cost about a tenner, so next time I'm going to give it a try with the pads stuck on my forehead, same place you would put the Cefaly.

Other than that, I would second what so many others have said: Sumatriptan, it's been a miracle cure for me, when you think how many days were ruined before they invented it! Love it.

As others have said, you can get a prescription or buy at a pharmacy: but I've bought it from online pharmacies before with no bother.

NormanStangerson · 29/06/2021 14:46

Three soluble aspirin dissolved in half a glass of original Coca Cola. GP remedy.

NormanStangerson · 29/06/2021 14:47

That and triptans. Life changing but not without their own side effects.

PandemicAtTheDisco · 29/06/2021 14:48

Transitional lenses in glasses that go dark in brighter light. They've made a huge difference for me.

I kkeep curtains closed during the day too when it's sunny.

My migraines with aura were fixed by having an osteopath work on my neck/shoulders - it turned out they were purely mechanical and nothing to do with hormones/sleep/diet etc. These days I mainly keep on top of it by being careful to do yoga and stretching of neck muscles, but if I feel too much neck tension I book in with the osteopath again. Not had a migraine in 5yrs now.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/06/2021 14:51

Triptans. Take one and twenty minutes late I'm completely fine. It's miraculous.

I find eating keto, once I'm over the initial carb flu, prevents most of them.

Mytupenceworth · 29/06/2021 14:56

I feel your pain! What works for me is a full sugar coke and soluble solphadine. There's codeine in both and the double wack sorts it out. I don't get migraines often but sometimes they can be so bad I get an injection from my gp.. if I catch it early enough, and not brush it off as just a headache, the coke and solphadine works wonders. Hope you feel better soon

Kitkat151 · 29/06/2021 14:57

My daughter has sumatriptan injections which she self injects....she also has Botox 3 monthly at neuro hospital ( she’s 27 and has migraines since she was 4) .

Hankunamatata · 29/06/2021 14:58

I can't take sumatriptan due to other meds so gp prescribed 900mg soluble aspirin

EveryoneIsThere · 29/06/2021 15:03

Nurofen Migraine Pain taken ASAP work like magic for my migraines. If I wake up to a migraine I have to make myself get out of bed and take a nurophen straight away. Tricky if I’m vomiting but I know it works so I just battle through. I then make myself walk around a bit. My migraines then clear and while I might be a bit groggy I feel ok.
My migraines aren’t generally that bad even though I vomit, feel nauseous and have auras. 😩.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 29/06/2021 15:03

Red Bull and painkillers as an emergency measure. The caffeine and taurine in the RB helps. I take taurine regularly and it often heads off a migraine.

RubyGoat · 29/06/2021 15:09

Try warmth & cold. See which is more helpful. I have 2 types of migraine - 1 type reacts better to warmth, the other to cold! I often sleep in a soft fleece hat, especially in winter, my hair looks shocking after a long attack.

I agree with the PP who recommended prophylactic magnesium & CoQ10. I also take vitamin B2 at a 400mg daily dose (it's pricey & hard to find though). Feverfew also helps some people, Boots sell it. Always check with a pharmacist that any OTC medication is ok to take together, and alongside any prescription medication you're already on, as some of them do interact.

Soluble aspirin is more helpful than paracetamol IME. However, it's likely to make you vomit if you take it on an empty stomach. A couple of digestives, a banana or a cereal bar is enough to prevent this. Be warned it's quite bitter & you need to swirl the glass to stop it settling to the bottom. I usually down it in one with the smallest amount of water possible to dissolve it, then drink some more fresh water after.
