AIBU to not buy from Soak and Sleep?

Really fancied one of their duvet covers until I saw it was "manufactured in China". Looked at another one...and another one....same thing.

Why would a company do that? So many people (including me) are boycotting anything made in PRC.

I'm not saying it's wrong but what's the boycott for? If it's for the revolting animal cruelty and the wet markets I totally agree.

TheKeatingFive · 25/06/2021 09:30

Well, lots of things are made in China. Is this news to you?

korawick12345 · 25/06/2021 09:31

Because many people are not like you and don’t boycott Chinese made products. Not sure what the purpose of your post is unless you want some sort of award for being (in your mind) virtuous. If you can’t work out why a company would produce goods in China I can only assume you are a bit dim

TheYearOfSmallThings · 25/06/2021 09:32

Most things are made in China. Are you going to boycott every store that sells goods made there?

Soubriquet · 25/06/2021 09:33

I don’t like buying straight from China because it takes so damn long to get here

I have no qualms with purchasing things from the U.K. that are made in China.

If you boycotted every single thing ever made in China you would be screwed really. Imagine all the little parts in your tv that could have been made in China, but because it was put together in the U.K. it doesn’t count

Getawriggleon · 25/06/2021 09:35

Hope you're not typing on a phone, tablet or computer OP, because if you are I've got some bad news for you.

SticksAndStoned · 25/06/2021 09:36

Yanbu to buy whatever you want from wherever you want.

But I don't get the point of the thread. Are you going to post threads about every shop that sells things made in China? What's your beef with this shop in particular?

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 25/06/2021 09:37

@Gavellar I've personally boycotted China for years due to their human rights issues involving Tibet and of course their own citizens.

The shortages we have experienced during the pandemic made me think that the world would realise we must not depend on China. It is far too powerful.

Just disappointed that Soak and Sleep have decided to use a country with such bad human rights and cheap labour. Soak and Sleep are selling their goods expensively so it's all about money isn't it.

OP posts:
Gavellar · 25/06/2021 09:39

There are definitely many good reasons to avoid. Not least the pleasure of buying locally sourced and made products. Nobody can change the world but at least we bother to care

massiveportion · 25/06/2021 09:42

Don't buy them then??

DysmalRadius · 25/06/2021 09:46

Why is this company bothering you particularly?

kindaclassy · 25/06/2021 09:48

You buy whatever you want to buy

but good luck to boycott China, it's possible but really hard to avoid anything coming from there one way or another.

Especially now that Brexit has put off many smaller european companies to export to the UK for the time being.

MissKeithsNeice · 25/06/2021 09:50

What phone have you got OP? What make hoover do you have? Does anyone in your family wear Nike? Or converse? Do you have a laptop, a tablet, do your electrical devices have chargers?

Do you ever shop at Superdrug? Eat Pizza Express pizzas? Hope you don't bank with Barclays...

Moving forward, the biggest logistical problem with your boycott is going to be warming and powering your house. You know China is investing heavily in our energy markets, right? And water too.

ClarisseMcClellan · 25/06/2021 09:50

I've never heard of this company but as a general rule in life you can choose who you buy from for whatever reason you like, no need for validation from the internet Grin

hairypaws · 25/06/2021 09:50

I don't know this particular company but we too are trying our best to boycott Chinese made goods. Their concentration camps, harvesting human organs, propaganda are just a few of our reasons. It is so well hidden too but thankfully governments are beginning to wake up and look at these issues rather than ignore due to the chance of making money with China.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 25/06/2021 09:51

We should all be trying to boycott goods made in China. Firstly because of their lack of human rights which is evil and secondly because it has far too much power and this is really going to bite us on the ass one day.

PuffItsGone · 25/06/2021 09:51

Soak and sleep are naff anyway. Bought pricey pillows and 6 months later I’m replacing them as they’ve basically fallen apart internally

Now that would make a much more interesting thread than 'should I boycott this one specific shop'.

Still wondering why op is picking on that specific one.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 25/06/2021 09:53

Most things from M&S are made in China.

MissKeithsNeice · 25/06/2021 09:57

Ah, okay, I see you started boycott a few years ago.

That must be quite research intensive. How do you stay on top of the detail?

ClarisseMcClellan · 25/06/2021 09:58

Now that would make a much more interesting thread than 'should I boycott this one specific shop'

I was thinking the same, the obession with framing every thread as an AIBU means that there's little serious discussion of important issues

bluelavender · 25/06/2021 09:58

It's small changes over time though isn't it?

Yes, lots of stuff is made in China, and yes China is invested heavily in banking and ultilies.

But its not ok that people get herded into camps, or that Hong Kong has just lost its free press.

As a consumer, I would rather buy products where I can be confident that the people making them have been fairly treated. If I buy a very cheap product then the economies of scale might mean that it was made in the cheapest place.

If I buy a premium priced product, its not unreasonable to pay more attention to how it was created

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 25/06/2021 09:59

I "picked" this specific company because I found it via Mumsnet. It was recommended to me here. I've previously bought from them...bedding manufactured in Portugal mainly but certainly not China.

I thought other like-minded people might just like to know where their duvet covers are being made.

YANBU I try to avoid buying from China and other countries with terrible working conditions, lack of human rights etc. But it’s very difficult. However I really think all the little decisions add up - I hope so anyway.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/06/2021 10:04

Agree that it's weird to single out one particular company over this when half the world's manufactured goods are made in China.

Anyway, seeing as Chinese manufacturers operate sweatshops in Italy and probably other places, using exploited workers in conditions that are illegal in the EU, so they can hide behind a 'Made in Italy' label that is only true from a geographical perspective, just avoiding the label 'Made in China' isn't a guarantee that you're avoiding such atrocities.
