Really fancied one of their duvet covers until I saw it was "manufactured in China". Looked at another one...and another one....same thing.

Why would a company do that? So many people (including me) are boycotting anything made in PRC.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 25/06/2021 12:02

Where was the device you use to mumsnet manufactured?
And your router.
And the cables connecting the router to the internet point?

AnoymousCoward · 25/06/2021 12:03

@Orf1abc

I presume the internet device parts are made either in China or Taiwan.

So you're boycotting China as long as it suits your lifestyle. Your ethical stance is a selective one!

Taiwan is not part of China! Indeed,their treatment of Taiwan is one of the reasons to boycott Chinese goods.
Killahangilion · 25/06/2021 12:07

@SpiderinaWingMirror

Lol. Its utterly up to you do as you please. People who agree with you are no doubt checking for themselves. I hate hypocrisy so I think you are bu to beat this particular drum on here. When your home, car , electronics are prob. full of Chinese stuff.
Yes, I hate hypocrisy too. Why did you bother posting? Hmm
AnoymousCoward · 25/06/2021 12:08

Anyway@Skinnytailedsquirrel try secret linen store. Their stuff is fabulous- and made in Europe.

ChristinaXYZ · 25/06/2021 12:09

You are not being unreasonable. What's the point of all the anger this last year over inequalities caused by eighteenth and nineteenth century slavery if we're going to be complacent today about supporting systems that currently use slavery and have other appalling human rights abuses. the treatment of Muslims in China is unbelievable and the treatment of women (one child/forced abortions) has been appalling too. I know this latter has come to an end recently but it is all part of the totalitarian system. Then there is Tibet. And so much more that others have mentioned.

If I see something made in China I leave it on the shelf unless I really cannot afford the alternative. There is almost always an alternative. Good for you OP.

PurpleyBlue · 25/06/2021 12:11

It seems really odd for you to have singled out one company when so much is made in China.

PurpleyBlue · 25/06/2021 12:12

And of course you are not being unreasonable. It's your money spend it where you want.

MissKeithsNeice · 25/06/2021 12:15

@EveryoneIsThere

Even if a product isn’t made in China then it doesn’t mean the components aren’t. I don’t know for certain but I’m pretty sure that most goose feathers come from China.

Also, the OP isn’t being hypocritical to use some things that are made in China. It be almost impossible not to. Just because you still use a few things made in China doesn’t make it pointless to try to avoid Chinese products elsewhere.

I try to eat local food where I can but still eat food from further afield. 🤷🏻‍♀️

But the OP specifically said she wasn't going to shop at the whole company because of where some of its linen is manufactured.

Its in the thread title Hmm

Despite OP having posted on MN about products she likes from made.com and Lakeland.

Whether or not boycotting Chinese products is the most effective (and frankly time-consuming) political action a person in the UK might make to bring about human rights change in China is an interesting and important topic. However, I'm not convinced the OP is the person I would chose to have that conversation with.

Regularsizedrudy · 25/06/2021 12:19

Surely your time would be better spent raising awareness of china’s human rights violations? I really don’t think you’re singular boycott will make much difference...

MissKeithsNeice · 25/06/2021 12:19

Apologies @everyoneisthere that was a misquote of you on my part.

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 25/06/2021 12:21

@AnoymousCoward, thanks...another company I hadn't heard of and it looks great :)

OP posts:
Killahangilion · 25/06/2021 12:25

China invaded Tibet in 1951 and have been persecuting Tibetan people ever since. Some of us have been actively avoiding Chinese manufactured goods for considerably longer than some of you have existed.

Yes, it used to be much easier twenty plus years ago, but making a stand against buying Chinese manufactured goods doesn’t have to be an ‘all or nothing’ approach.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 25/06/2021 12:32

Ridiculous question. Should people not buy ecover in Tesco because they also sell Persil?

Perfectly reasonable to buy the Ecover, but less reasonable to name and shame Tesco in particular for selling Persil when every grocery store sells Persil.

If the title of this thread was "AIBU to avoid buying products manufactured in China", I would say "YANBU, good for you." But the title singles out one business among many and suggests that she should boycott them for doing what every other similar business does. So I think it is completely valid to ask whether she is boycotting all the other businesses too.

Camphillgirl · 25/06/2021 12:37

There are plenty of scams on social media nowadays and even ads on Mumsnet where the item you buy either never arrives or if it does is wrong size, colour or material. If you complain it costs so much to return it before they entertain an exchange you don’t bother. Often on complaining they try to offer a credit voucher and you have to spend more money to get something else that either does not arrive or is not as advertised. At the same time you are inundated with requests for extra payments to cover unforeseen shipping costs.

The sums involved usually fall below the charge back amount your card provider stipulates. SO You lose out all round.

A lot of the scams originate in China and we are lambs to the slaughter. BEWARE

Bumzoo · 25/06/2021 12:38

They sell feather duvets too.

Wouldn't touch them. Clever advertising with popular influencers who get paid to tell you to shop there.

ShrinkingViolet9 · 25/06/2021 12:54

Do you buy large white garlic, OP? Chances are it's imported from China.

Supermarket packets of fast action dried yeast ? Also made in China, at least the last two packets I bought from Tesco were.

halfwaythrough2 · 25/06/2021 13:07

Wow most of you really don't know about what China is doing to people!
The biggest way to fight for freedom is actually with your money and where you spend it.

For those of you confused about this post I suggest you doing research into the Chinese Muslim prison camps .........

And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

PurpleyBlue · 25/06/2021 13:09

@Bimblybomeyelash

I admire you for sticking to your morals, and I understand why someone would wish to Boycott products made in China. I do find it odd that you have singled out this particular company though!
Me too

Haha, if you think I was 'naming and shaming' Tesco, you have entirely missed the point of my post.
JellyTumble · 25/06/2021 13:12

YABU. Your boycott isn’t going to make any difference to anyone whatsoever.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 25/06/2021 13:12

Haha, if you think I was 'naming and shaming' Tesco, you have entirely missed the point of my post.

Actually you have missed the point of my post, but I literally don't have the energy to talk you through it.

RestingCatsBumFace · 25/06/2021 13:18

I wouldn't buy cotton bedding from China because of the chemicals used in the manufacture.

I bought a pretty, white bedding set, made in China, and even after 6 washes it stank of chemicals. Had to return it to the shop in the end. It might have been a one-off, but wouldn't bother again.

bluelavender · 25/06/2021 13:26

Think some of this is a bit harsh.

It could be that OP was browsing the companies products, (as it sounds like they would do as have been avoiding products made in China for some time, so would check country of origin) and was surprised that this particular item was made in China, when they would have expected it to be made elsewhere.

Its an example of how complex manufacturing is. It's not like OP came on to express surprise that an electronic toy or TV was made in China. Or that a very low lost item was.

What's wrong with wanting to spend your money on items where you can feel confident that everyone working on it was working under their own free will?

For these going 'what about consumer electronics etc' change takes time but if ethical considerations come in to purchasing decisions along with price, then this might over time, give more choice for people wanting to buy products that were not made in China, or made with components made in China

I didn't.

I just didn't address it.

ViciousJackdaw · 25/06/2021 13:38

It is your money and you are free to spend it as you wish. You do not need to ask MN.

Wouldn't it have been more constructive to say 'I'm boycotting Chinese-made goods, can anyone recommend a non-Chinese retailer please?' though?
