Really fancied one of their duvet covers until I saw it was "manufactured in China". Looked at another one...and another one....same thing.

Why would a company do that? So many people (including me) are boycotting anything made in PRC.

Practically everything is made in China. I used to work in a distribution business when my dc were little ( before going back into nhs). All electrical goods from European and British companies arrived in boxes labelled " made in China". The item would be in its commercial packaging inside that box. It is the same with clothing and surgical/ nhs supplies.
I don't know how to avoid it.

@TheYearOfSmallThings

Most things are made in China. Are you going to boycott every store that sells goods made there?
Yes. I am . I have been boycotting products made in China since 2019.
Thehenbunringsock · 25/06/2021 10:41

Answer the questions about your electronics. What phone are you using right now? You're losing credibility by dodging pertinent questions.

PuffinMcHuffin · 25/06/2021 10:41

I've personally boycotted China for years due to their human rights issues involving Tibet and of course their own citizens.

Then why are you asking a group of strangers if you are being unreasonable?

I suspect you are actually something to do with one of their competitors.

You might be better telling them that rather than MN.
NothingEverChangesButTheShoes · 25/06/2021 10:44

I do try to buy local or British as much as I can, but I am on a tight budget. I simply cannot afford the prices unless I save up for British made. A lot of the time I am not able to save for something specific if it is needed right away.

GiantWingedWaspMoth · 25/06/2021 10:44

Bloody hell, this is turning into a witch hunt.

It's like those threads that criticise vegans for buying things from shops that sell meat products.

Why does it have to be 'all-or-nothing'? Why can't it be about doing the best you can, knowing that you'll never manage to do it perfectly? It's like being environmentally friendly. You don't have to be doing everything to make a difference.

furstivetreats · 25/06/2021 10:55

@GiantWingedWaspMoth because that would mean all these posters piling on to have a dig wouldn't be able to show off how smart they are, including the ones who are repeating the same point made by several before them, and we can't have that.

VettiyaIruken · 25/06/2021 11:03

Those that do boycott, do you have a list of all products and all components in products that are made in china?
You'd be helping others who might feel the same if you could share it

PattyPan · 25/06/2021 11:08

Buy from Dip & Doze. Organic and Fairtrade, made in India. Lovely quality.

Not what I asked though - are you boycotting all stores that sells goods made in China.

PattyPan · 25/06/2021 11:11

Fwiw it’s quite common to boycott toiletry etc brands that are also sold in China because China requires animal testing so those brands aren’t cruelty free.

Bimblybomeyelash · 25/06/2021 11:12

I admire you for sticking to your morals, and I understand why someone would wish to
Boycott products made in China. I do find it odd that you have singled out this particular company though!

everythingcrossed · 25/06/2021 11:16

I've been avoiding buying products from China for about a year because of the treatment of Uighurs/Hong Kong/Tibetans. It is really difficult and, if I were queen of the world, I would make it mandatory for companies selling on the internet to clearly state their products' country of origin (I've slipped up a few times because of that). One tip I have is to look on ebay and buy a product second-hand rather than buy from a retailer - that way the "damage" of buying from China has already been done, iyswim - I'm not contributing to the demand.

Ridiculous question. Should people not buy ecover in Tesco because they also sell Persil?

Should people not buy Linda McCartney burgers in Lidl because they also sell beef ones?

Do you think it pointless to do something if it's only possible to do it imperfectly?

everythingcrossed · 25/06/2021 11:18

I was also reading a trade publication a few weeks ago that more or less said that China had become a victim of its own success and wages there were now so high that manufacturing was starting to move to SE Asia, India etc. While some of those countries' authorities don't have blemish-free human rights records, they are not quite as egregious or pernicious as the Chinese government.

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 25/06/2021 11:37

@PattyPan - thanks, I'd not heard of that company but looks lovely and I like their ethos

Lol. Its utterly up to you do as you please.
People who agree with you are no doubt checking for themselves.
I hate hypocrisy so I think you are bu to beat this particular drum on here. When your home, car , electronics are prob. full of Chinese stuff.

EveryoneIsThere · 25/06/2021 11:48

Even if a product isn’t made in China then it doesn’t mean the components aren’t. I don’t know for certain but I’m pretty sure that most goose feathers come from China.

Also, the OP isn’t being hypocritical to use some things that are made in China. It be almost impossible not to. Just because you still use a few things made in China doesn’t make it pointless to try to avoid Chinese products elsewhere.

I try to eat local food where I can but still eat food from further afield. 🤷🏻‍♀️

MissDollyMix · 25/06/2021 11:48

Never even heard of this company. What kind of name is ‘soak and sleep’?? Puts me in mind of a specialist nighttime incontinence products company… Hmm

Regretsandregrets · 25/06/2021 11:49

Think about human rights in Palestine, Kashmir, Afghanistan, Iraq and so many other places and think about which countries are actively involved in suppressing human rights there!!
Unless some humans are more human than others.

MaloInAnAppleTree · 25/06/2021 11:53

My iPhone was made in China but probably not using slave labour. The cotton in the S&S duvet cover however was very likely grown by enslaved Uighurs.

Fairtrade certification is a safe choice for bed linen. Or for a cheap and attractive range, try H&M, who AFAIK are doing a pretty good job on tracing their fabric and have been kicked out of China for taking a stand. I think it’s worth supporting them in their stance.

I feel so in awe of you. Clearly you manage to do everything you set your mind to completely perfectly, even when it's an impossible task.

I bet you don't even need to recycle, because you have reduced and reused so you don't need to!

Well done you!

Are only iphones made in China?

If they are the only manufacturer to make phones there then it's perfectly obvious that the OP won't even own one. She's been boycotting Chinese products for some time, of course she knows to buy a different brand of phone.
