To be sorry we've lost our nice view?

We have an elevated bit of garden level with our upstairs windows with a lovely view of a field and woods. Yesterday our neighbour put an office type chalet up in the field right in our line of vision, sure we'll get used to it but it looks so out of place in the country.

I’d be gutted.

Tryingtryingandtrying · 25/06/2021 07:46

Yes me too. You can't do anything about it though sadly.

blahblahblah321 · 25/06/2021 07:46

Me too Luna Sad

Don't you need planning permission for something like that?

Timetochange11 · 25/06/2021 07:47

I thought I'd deleted the photo! It's not the actual building but similar. I've asked for it to be deleted. I do like our neighbour.

I would be upset too.

PurpleyBlue · 25/06/2021 07:48

Hopefully you'll get used to it? You could ask them to plant around it to soften it up a bit?

NiceTwin · 25/06/2021 07:48

Oh, that is a shame, I too would be gutted.

Timetochange11 · 25/06/2021 07:48

It's on agricultural land, I thought so as it's change of use but dh says it's classed as a summerhouse.

@PurpleyBlue I was thinking of planting some trees on my fenceline

Are you in a world heritage site, or area of outstanding natural Beauty or similar ? If so they would have had significant scrutiny and potential refusal for that.
I know the photo isn’t the actual but I’d be upset about light from it - might be once you work out how and when they tend to use it and whether there are security lights tripped by animals etc you can try to resolve with them if it’s causing problems.
I’d be rather upset that given the setting they didn’t let you know. If it were me there’s no way I’d just plonk something where a neighbour would be badly affected without discussing working out whether there was an alternative giving assurance about use/lights etc. Also just to let you know !

Drivingmeupthewall · 25/06/2021 07:56

Is it more of a blot on the landscape rather than blocking the whole view? Presumably you can still see around it. It’s a shame but I doubt there’s much you can do.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 25/06/2021 08:01

No planning permission required under a certain height and size in a “normal” garden. Loads of these being put up since COVID. YANBU to be upset at the change though.

Timetochange11 · 25/06/2021 08:02

It's a blot! Because it's new and sort of right in front of us it's all.we see for now. It's also about 100 yards from her back door, she could have had it nearer her house and we wouldn't have really noticed it. We are in an area of outstanding beauty, she told our other neighbours she was putting up a summerhouse in her garden.

If it's agricultural land they can't start using it as a garden without planning permission for change of use. And housing permitted development doesn't apply, they need planning permission. It's worth checking with the planning dept.

Clymene · 25/06/2021 08:06

I just found this: In an AONB/National Park you must build within 20m of any part of your house. If you are further than 20m, then you cannot exceed a total of 10sq m, including existing buildings further than 20m from the home.

Isn't that bigger than 10 sq m? I realise that's not the actual building but if it's a similar size, that's way bigger. Have you checked she's got planning permission?

Forestdweller11 · 25/06/2021 08:12

I sympathise. Our neighbours are shed mad. They have about 4 acres to play with but have put their sun room, x3 garden sheds, potting shed and sort of tool shed thing as well as assorted compost heaps and random bits of panel fence 'to act as windbreaks' about 8 m from our living room window which used to have a lovely view.

Timetochange11 · 25/06/2021 08:21

I've just looked, no planning application or approval. Her direct neighbour is on the parish council so I wouldn't be surprised if he says something. I'm not going to, she's ok just a bit entitled! Maybe my neighbour and I could suggest she plants some screening?

Timetochange11 · 25/06/2021 08:22

@Clymene it's the same dimensions as the picture

I was going to say the same thing. Worth checking with the council.
ginghamtablecloths · 25/06/2021 08:23

Is it possible to grow some trees to hide it?

Itllbeaninterestingchristmas · 25/06/2021 08:23

Agricultural land cannot be used for domestic curtalige (SP) e.g summer house, patio etc unless they have planning permission. If your local planning department are particularly picky you can't leave your horse jumps out on agricultural land. Equine land is a different classification.

AuntyFungal · 25/06/2021 08:24

I live in an AONB and you would need pp for this building. Also, i don’t think it would be allowed on agri land. It’s not a storage shed for a tractor / silage!

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 25/06/2021 08:25

You are not being unreasonable to be sad about your view

We have just moved somewhere which has council land in front of us, full of trees and bushes, dh is now going to spend the next 10/15 years worrying that the council will sell it to builders

HeronLanyon · 25/06/2021 08:26

Oh well the AONB I’ve had planning dealings with would have required planning permission for anything on agricultural land and anything in ‘open countryside’. Neighbour of mine want to place something v similar a distance from her house and was refused due to setting - too far from house, light pollution in open undeveloped countryside - this was to have been in a garden but not even change if use from agricultural.
Do a search on your planning website - perhaps they did obtain permission ? If not make enquiries with enforcement - don’t go wading in though as it may in fact be permitted dévelopment but it sounds odd. Definitely check it out behind the scenes then regroup and consider what you want to do (if there is anything you can do).

LIZS · 25/06/2021 08:27

Agree, it needs pp. We looked at a house with extended garden and would not have been able to build a structure on the extension as it was designated for agricultural use.
