Do You Serve Yourself All The Best Bits?

I do.

I made a bloody amazing lasagne this evening. When I was dishing it out, I noticed DH’s bit had a particularly nice bit of bubbling mozzarella on it so I took it for myself before I took it through to the table. Since I do most of the cooking because I like it and I’m good at it, I do this quite a lot. I’ll take the juicier bit of chicken breast or the nicest looking roast potatoes for example. I don’t serve myself more than DH, I just take what I consider to be the choicest bits.

Then I started to think about my dear (now sadly dead) gran who would be horrified at this behaviour Grin she would ALWAYS give the best bits of meat to my grandad or my dad, even if it meant everyone else had gristle. I remember on holiday once the women and children got fish fingers and the men a prime bit of cod loin which she fried up in some batter. She’d also buy steak for the men and a cheaper cut for the women.

I was just musing over whether I do it to rally against her strange ways (she always said the men deserved the nice bits more because they worked hard) or do I just think I deserve all the best bits because I’ve cooked it 😂

So do you serve your partner/children the nicest bits first or are you selfish like me and keep them for yourself Grin

Bit of both

GintyMcGinty · 24/06/2021 12:22

If I cooked it then yes I take the best bit.

My gran used to do the same as yours.

Marylou2 · 24/06/2021 12:30

Crispy bits and extra cheesy bits are the chef's prerogative. Also the crunchy bacon from the top of the Christmas turkey and the first end slice of roast lamb. Mouth is watering as I'm currently on a diet, not hard to guess why!

alloverthecarpetagain · 24/06/2021 12:35

My exMiL always openly took the best bit and said 'Cook's privilege' which I heartily agree with.

Enko · 24/06/2021 15:48

Take it in turns really

RubertRoo · 24/06/2021 15:51

I plate my DDs first and give her the best bits. Then I give myself what I want and lastly DH has whatever is left as he does no cooking at all.
And then sometimes I feel bad so swap a couple of his items for mine

Shodan · 24/06/2021 16:05

I try to make the plates look the same.

But if I'm the only one in the kitchen cooking and serving up, then all kinds of nice things get diverted before they make it onto the plates.

However, if any of the lazy lummocks in my house come and help with cooking/serving, I generously allow them a few choice bits too.

I'm nice like that. Grin

AlfonsoTheMango · 24/06/2021 16:09

I do, but I live alone so this also means I get the less nice bits.

Conchitastrawberry · 24/06/2021 16:13

No I always give the best bits to the husband and kids.

viques · 24/06/2021 16:18

If there are guests they get the best bits , but if not the best bits are mine.

One of the joys of being an adult with no children in the house is that I get all the raw cake mix to myself , that means bowl and beaters/spoons/ spatulas.

cupsofcoffee · 24/06/2021 16:20

I definitely get the best bits when I cook Grin

And when DH cooks, he gives himself the best bits too. Chef's privilege!

Esmereldapawpatrol · 24/06/2021 16:58

Yes I do this! Like you I don't have more, just the bits I want! There has to be some benefits of being the one who mostly does all the meal planning, shopping and cooking. When DH cooks I wouldn't mind him doing the same, perks of the chef!

SemiFeralDalek · 24/06/2021 17:43

I'm in charge of all the cooking, I'd generally cook each person's food to their preference. So my steak more well done than DH's etc. I like cheesy garlic bread leads crispy and he's a dustbin, so that works well.

But if it was like the burnt chop mentioned, I'd have that one, but mainly because if I was cooking, it was my responsibility not to burn them, and if I did, that's my punishment to suffer Grin

3Britnee · 24/06/2021 17:49

I share them between us, me and DH, no kids etc.

Cherries590 · 24/06/2021 17:53

I’d share, and I certainly wouldn’t cherry-pick from someone’s plate.

headintheproverbial · 24/06/2021 17:54

When carving up the roast chicken to plate I always select the crispiest best bit of skin and wolf it then and there, hot and crunchy and glorious.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 24/06/2021 17:58

I usually serve everyone else what they think are the 'best bits', but I'm also a great believer in the cook's treat - something lovely to be snaffled in the kitchen while still cooking, think the crunchiest roast potato, the first halloumi slice out of the pan, the smallest, sweetest strawberry.

3Britnee · 24/06/2021 18:02

@plominoagain

When they spend their time and effort making a particularly nice meal , then they get chefs perks .

Till then , I get the crispiest roasties , the best Yorkshire puddings, and the chicken skin . Oh and when the beef is nearly done , I put a slice of bread in there to soak up the juices and get crispy at the same time. Like a gigantic umami flavoured crouton. Which I will deny utterly if challenged .

I do this if I've cooked bacon (although I do it to both of ours bread).
DinosApple · 24/06/2021 18:04

I get the best bits. Usually before plating up Grin.

I've cooked every night, bar maybe three nights - and the odd meal out - in thirteen years, damn right I get the good bits! Cooks perks!

TheKeatingFive · 24/06/2021 18:04

Absolutely, chef’s perks Grin

MyMabel · 24/06/2021 18:06

I’m terrible for this.. and also when I’m making something with smoked salmon flakes.. or cutting up mattesons sausage for pasta bake.. I eat it as I’m bloody slicing it so I’ve had more than DP.

I’m a hungrymonster

ChristmasFluff · 24/06/2021 18:08

Always give my son the best bits.

Except most potatoes, because he likes the brownest chips (that to me are overdone) so I get to have the soggy ones that I love; and he likes crispy roast potatoes, where I like squidgy ones.

FuckingFabulous · 24/06/2021 18:29

I always serve myself last
