The washing up bowl debate....

To do my washing up I use a plastic washing up bowl within a stainless steel sink.
Work colleague was appalled, never uses a plastic bowl as a sink is a bowl in itself.

I am a very reluctant washing up bowl user since moving to our current house that has a loathsome Belfast sink (why? WHY??). I hate it, but the sink is massive and completely impractical so it is a necessity unfortunately.

I like my washing up bowl lol! It doesn't "live" in the sink though, its kept under the sink unless I'm doing the washing up.

I use it when I'm cleaning as well - I half fill it with some soapy water and use it to wipe down all the surfaces in different rooms. What do you all use for that if you don't have a bowl?

I am a bit of a control freak so I have 2 washing up bowls one for our stuff and one for baby bottles and paraphernalia. Wouldn’t be without it now very useful. I even use another for house hold jobs to soak baby clothes instead of a bucket - super handy for variety of cleaning jobs!

Image of the day for me - washing up bowl used as Barbie swimming pool. Love it spacepotato. Is her hair in a swimming cap ?

I've got loads of washing up bowls but I don't use any of them for washing up.
I wet the item, wash with a dishmatic, then rinse. It's only a few things that get washed this way as we have a dishwasher.
My parents hate the way I wash up though, when they come and stay they bring their own washing up bowl!

I collect my washing up throughout the day in my washing up bowl, placed on the worktop next to the sink. The sink is clear all day for tipping dregs, draining pasta etc. Then at the end of the day, I pick up the bowl and stick it in the sink to do my washing up. (No dishwasher!)

I couldn't be doing with that, don't you have to empty it all again to start washing up. Before we got a dishwasher we'd wash things as they were used.

@OrangeIsNeutral in a small kitchen there is generally little worktop space so even that dishwasher is too big .

Allow me to introduce you to... Desktop dishwashers!

I have no room for a free standing dishwasher because my kitchen is the size of a postage stamp. If I got a table top dishwasher I would have literally zero worktop space to prepare food etc.

For the sake of filling a washing up bowl once a day, I'll skip the dishwasher

So glad to finally read a post like this. I knew that there would be a split between those who use a bowl and those who don't but was really surprised to read that some people have the tap running the whole time. That's a disgusting waste of water. It must take several bowl/sinkfuls to do a full load of washing up.

cariadlet · 23/06/2021 22:08

Not sure what happened there. I thought I'd quoted a pp who was brought up to conserve water.

olivethegreat · 23/06/2021 22:18

Washing up bowl here. It periodically goes through the dishwasher to keep it clean.

StoneofDestiny · 23/06/2021 22:43

Always use a bowl for small amounts of washing up.

Though everything generally goes in the dishwasher.
