The washing up bowl debate....

notanotherusernameidea · 23/06/2021 08:30

To do my washing up I use a plastic washing up bowl within a stainless steel sink.
Work colleague was appalled, never uses a plastic bowl as a sink is a bowl in itself.

Same here. Always a bowl in sink

cariadlet · 23/06/2021 08:33

I used a plastic washing up bowl for years. I got rid of it when we had a new sink which has a main sink and a small extra sink which I can use to tip away dregs of drinks etc. I wouldn't go back to a plastic washing up bowl.

Sparklingbrook · 23/06/2021 08:34

Bowl in sink and bowl mat to stop the bowl scratching it. Got a double sink which makes things easier.
But also a dishwasher so only really use sink for cat dishes etc. Used water goes on the garden in the summer. You need a bowl for that.

purplesequins · 23/06/2021 08:36

if you didn't have s sink you would have a point. but since you have one Confused

I have one washing up bowl to soak my feet.
and one to take camping.

Peachi82 · 23/06/2021 08:38

I think the washing up bowl is a very British thing. I've never seen this anywhere else.

Snozzlemaid · 23/06/2021 08:39

Never used a bowl.

TwoLeftElbows · 23/06/2021 08:39

It's a British oddity, apparently. Washing up bowl for me. We have a big sink with a normal size washing up bowl and use the space around it as extra draining space.

minipie · 23/06/2021 08:42

If you don’t have a dishwasher and you only have one sink then I can see the point of a bowl - as a pp says it gives you the option to tip dregs of drinks etc down the side whilst washing up.

But if you have two sinks or a dishwasher (so not much washing up) I can’t see the point.

PILs have a bowl, two sinks and a dishwasher. Can’t see the point of their washing up bowl, it’s just another thing that needs washing…

Somuddled · 23/06/2021 08:43

No bowl here. It makes no sense to me. Just another messy thing to faff with.

Rewis · 23/06/2021 08:44

No bowl. My bf uses one and I've always found it confusing since I had never seen it before

OoglyMoogly · 23/06/2021 08:45

With the washing up bowl you can rinse the detergent off the dishes directing the rinsing water between the bowl and the sink before putting them on the drying rack. Without it, the sink would overflow!

Notcalledlottie · 23/06/2021 08:49

It’s the debate in our house
We had one but it went manky-no amount of cleaning would get it clean so my partner binned it and doesn’t want another
I do cos it’s handy
We have a dishwasher but a bowl is good if we need to soak something (the plug doesn’t fit)
I’ve left it as it’s not worth falling out over

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 23/06/2021 08:49

No bowl. Years ago I had one but then I noticed that the bottom of it just accumulated slimy gunk unless it's washed daily so now I don't bother. It's just another thing to clean.

I have a dishwasher so it's not often I have to empty drink dregs at the same time as the sink is full of washing up.

MarianneUnfaithful · 23/06/2021 08:52

I use a bowl as I have a single sink.

To rinse off mucky stuff straight into the sink before putting it in the bowl
To be able to rinse straight into the sink down the side of the bowl.

If you have a single sink and no bowl how do you pre-rinse and rinse off the washing up water and soap?

I also use cleanish bowl water for the garden for eco/ smart meter reasons. Bowl needed.

vodkaredbullgirl · 23/06/2021 08:54

Only time I used a washing up bowl, was when I had no plug for the sink.

UhtredRagnarson · 23/06/2021 08:55

YANBU

Washing up bowl cushions the dishes so they don’t make that ungodly racket when you are sloshing your hands about while washing them. Also if you don’t have an extra half sink then you need somewhere to run the rinse water that isn’t into the hot water your dishes are in.

Yes. What is the point of it Confused
purplesequins · 23/06/2021 08:56

you can get plugs cheaply at diy stores (or that shelf at the post office)

Eachpeachpears · 23/06/2021 08:59

Am I the only one who doesn't 'fill' anything and washes stuff under the running tap with washing up liquid on the sponge? I can't stand all the food crap in the bowl it makes me feel sick

CheshireDing · 23/06/2021 09:01

YABU
I have never understood the point in the bowls either.

We are currently on holiday and there is a bowl in the sink, it’s just in the way all the time, needs rinsing out itself, what’s the bloody point.

I think they were invented by a company to make money (but are utterly not necessary for the environment - the extra plastic or the actual extra piece of tat it creates)

Recycle it and never buy another OP

UhtredRagnarson · 23/06/2021 09:02

You rinse the food crap off the dishes before you put them in the bowl!

Akire · 23/06/2021 09:06

Always a bowl. You can put stuff to soak and drain and rinse stuff at the same time. Plus saves litres of extra water filling all that extra sink space that you don’t need and stops glasses getting bashed about on sinless steel. Never lived anywhere big enough for a dishwasher so long live the bowl.

You've got bigger problems if buying a washing up bowl causes a falling out.
ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 23/06/2021 09:13

we use dishwahers🤷‍♀️

bowl in sink is disgusting and so is not rinsing the washing up liquid off with water.

iduno · 23/06/2021 09:15

Growing up we had a bowl in the sinkfor washing up. I've always had a dishwasher so no bowl for me. Well I do have one under the sink and keep cloths and cleaning stuff etc in it and use it for one when of us gets sick 😷 So really it's our sick bowl 😂🤢
