The washing up bowl debate....

To do my washing up I use a plastic washing up bowl within a stainless steel sink.
Work colleague was appalled, never uses a plastic bowl as a sink is a bowl in itself.

Used one when we had a single sink so we could tip the tea dregs out of mugs.
Now have a one-and-a-half sink, so never use one.

cocoloco987 · 23/06/2021 09:48

I don't use the bowl, it's yet another bloody thing to clean and gets build up quickly if you don't properly wash it down and dry it well every time. My sink isn't very big which makes this more difficult. Washing bowl now relegated to sick bowl/cleaning bowl

cocoloco987 · 23/06/2021 09:49

Also it also takes up space in the already small sink so makes washing larger items awkward

TheSunShinesBrighter · 23/06/2021 09:56

Washing bowls are useful if you have only one sink and no dishwasher.
Cook, put stuff in the washing bowl as you go along, lift out bowl when you need to drain pasta, veg or whatever, replace bowl in sink with stuff in it when you’ve done.
Wash up everything after meal.

Double sink and dishwasher means nothing is in the sink nowadays but years ago I did the above.

OhRene · 23/06/2021 09:57

Just the sink for us. Can't see the point of a bowl.

thecatsthecats · 23/06/2021 09:59

@Eachpeachpears

Am I the only one who doesn't 'fill' anything and washes stuff under the running tap with washing up liquid on the sponge? I can't stand all the food crap in the bowl it makes me feel sick
Yup, me. Rinse/soak things before washing, and run under a thin stream of flowing water whilst washing.

Mind you, I have a dishwasher, so this is only for pans, but washing bowls make me feel sick, as would washing in the sink.

OhRene · 23/06/2021 10:00

The washing up all gets rinsed before we fill the sink. No need to pour dregs down the side of a bowl.

Last bowl I had was just extra unnecessary washing up, having to scrub the bottom as it got gross and slimy if anyone forgot.

HeronLanyon · 23/06/2021 10:00

I use one too. For reasons by op above.
Additionally I am a glass breaker and would be fearful of washing delicate glasses without a bowl.
Never thrown one away. They are recycled into diy/painting containers/washing up stuff storage under sink/ when had garden - gardening mini weeding containers/ whole host of outdoor diy related jobs/recuse of various cat present animals/ rehiring frogs and toads brought in by cats etc etc. When not in use just stacked in shed.

HeronLanyon · 23/06/2021 10:01

Rehoming frogs not rehiring them !

Bowl on the side to protect my bad back from bending over. It's a bit more inconvenient than using the sink.

Crockof · 23/06/2021 10:13

I can't believe people wash thing up In The Sink!

Definitely a bowl and I honestly didn't know that people didn't use one Envy not envy

Gemma2019 · 23/06/2021 10:16

I'm surprised at all the posters who dislike bowls or don't have one. I've got a ceramic sink and don't want to damage it or break stuff so use a bowl. I've actually got this bowl with a plughole, which is brilliant.

The washing up bowl debate....
MooseBreath · 23/06/2021 10:22

I'm Canadian. Had never heard of a "washing up bowl" until I moved here. I don't understand why you wouldn't just wash dishes in the sink and clean the sink regularly. Seems completely unnecessary to me!

VeganVeal · 23/06/2021 10:43

If you use a washing up bowl do you do the same in the bath, do you have a plastic bath and put it inside the bath and get into that???

Sparklingbrook · 23/06/2021 10:44

Don’t tend to wash the cat bowls in the bath. Or the frying pan. Confused So no.
cocoloco987 · 23/06/2021 10:46

@Gemma2019 that looks even more effort to keep clean than a standard bowl 😆

MiddlesexGirl · 23/06/2021 10:46

Always a bowl because it protects the crockery/glassware from the much harder sink and it allows for slops like tea to be dunked over the side etc. Just way more practical.

idontlikealdi · 23/06/2021 10:46

@Notcalledlottie

It’s the debate in our house We had one but it went manky-no amount of cleaning would get it clean so my partner binned it and doesn’t want another I do cos it’s handy We have a dishwasher but a bowl is good if we need to soak something (the plug doesn’t fit) I’ve left it as it’s not worth falling out over
Get a plug that fits, problem solved!

No bowl. Can't understand the point of it at all.

Yerroblemom1923 · 23/06/2021 10:46

Are washing up bowls the new toilet brushes of Mumsnet...?
I like them but it's essential to keep them clean or the bottom goes manky.

When I washed a very small person who didn’t need a whole bath full of water- yes I used a smaller “bowl” in the bath to wash them in.
WhateverJohnnyMcNofriends · 23/06/2021 10:52

After reading this thread the word "bowl" now looks really weird.

We use one because we have a ceramic sink and glasses kept getting broken, we also noticed that baking trays were scratching the sink. But I wouldn't have one otherwise

MiddlesexGirl · 23/06/2021 10:54

What I don't understand is all the people saying they don't understand why people use bowls when there are very many good reasons right here in this thread!

EsmesRedPetticoat · 23/06/2021 10:55

No bowl. Washing up bowls are just another thing to clean. We only have a washing up bowl for camping.

FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge · 23/06/2021 10:55

@Gemma2019 I have that bowl too, I love mine.

Had it for a couple of years now, still spotless. The staff room bowl at work though is honking Grin
