The washing up bowl debate....

To do my washing up I use a plastic washing up bowl within a stainless steel sink.
Work colleague was appalled, never uses a plastic bowl as a sink is a bowl in itself.

I’ve just checked my bowl. 😂
It’s perfectly clean on the bottom and in no way disgusting. It’s currently on its side in the sink which is also clean. I think I’m going to be ok. Phew.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 23/06/2021 09:16

I've got a double ceramic sink, and I broke a lot of crockery/glasses before starting to use a washing up bowl!

UhtredRagnarson · 23/06/2021 09:17

bowl in sink is disgusting

😂

People are bonkers

Seeline · 23/06/2021 09:18

I like a bowl because the water stays hotter for longer than in a stainless steel sink, but don't use one now as I can't find one to fit. I think a plastic bowl also protects the items being washed (less likely to be chipped etc), and it's certainly quieter. But I am quite happy not to have a bowl.

I also understand using a bowl if you have a massive Belfast-type sink as it will save on water.

ZenNudist · 23/06/2021 09:18

Another thing you learn on mumsnet, people don't like bowls.

We have one, and an extra sink. It's just a smaller size to fill, filling the whole sink for a small amount of pans would regularly waste water. We tend to use a dishwasher but hand wash pans and trays.

@Eachpeachpears

Am I the only one who doesn't 'fill' anything and washes stuff under the running tap with washing up liquid on the sponge? I can't stand all the food crap in the bowl it makes me feel sick
Same!
Sparklingbrook · 23/06/2021 09:20

No bowls no loo brushes no irons. Where will it end? Grin

guiltynetter · 23/06/2021 09:20

I work in elderly peoples houses and I'd say 90% of them have washing up bowls. I hate them! You can't rinse things without the water going into the washing up bowl and then you have to pour it out or clean it. Or the other day I was tipping out some hot chocolate out of a cup because it was too full... It just stayed round the side of the bowl and didn't go down the plug and I had to pick up the full heavy bowl of cold water to let it go down. Just use the flipping sink

TeachesOfPeaches · 23/06/2021 09:21

It's definitely a British thing. Got rid of mine years ago as the underneath of the bowl gets really grim

Somatronic · 23/06/2021 09:22

I like a basin in the sink. My DH doesn't so we don't have one. He reckons it's a rural/urban divide issue, with rural people using them and urban people not using them. We aren't British so that might just be a local quirk.

Also, can confirm that it's not just English people who use them.

Sparklingbrook · 23/06/2021 09:22

The underneath of the bowl might get grim if you let it.
I clean my sink every day and the underneath of the bowl is clean too. Confused

very British indeed. got lots of friends and family in various European countries and never seen this obsession with plastic bowls anywhere else.

we only ever used a plastic bowl for washing up when camping.

UhtredRagnarson · 23/06/2021 09:27

Erm, yes you can.

Where would you have poured your hot chocolate if the sink had been full of the cold water? Confused

Ewww! Why on earth weren’t you washing it? That’s nothing to do with washing up bowls and all to do with you just not washing!
LST · 23/06/2021 09:29

Always used to have one. But now I have a mini sink I on the middle I don't

LST · 23/06/2021 09:29

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba

we use dishwahers🤷‍♀️

bowl in sink is disgusting and so is not rinsing the washing up liquid off with water.

No it's not
CeeceeBloomingdale · 23/06/2021 09:30

I use a bowl, it saves on water and is softer than the sink so things are less likely to get chipped.

FrenchBoule · 23/06/2021 09:30

Whatever you like.

I personally dislike it as I find it easier to wipe the sink than tackle greasy bowl.

LifeIsAMotorway · 23/06/2021 09:31

Always a bowl so clumsy people me don't break glasses in the sink.

Rosebel · 23/06/2021 09:38

We use a bowl as I can't bear the noise dishes make in the sink always sound like they're breaking.

Animum2 · 23/06/2021 09:41

Never used a bowl

bridgetreilly · 23/06/2021 09:43

Bowl all the way. To prevent chipping and allow for draining. And because we are not barbarians. 😂😂😂

Ohmygoshandfolly · 23/06/2021 09:44

Haven’t used a bowl for years. We have one stored away incase norovirus hits.

Same here! Never understood the attraction of filling up the sink (or a bowl) and washing items in dirty water.

Running tap + sponge + washing up liquid
