DC mucking about upstairs. one has fallen back and hit their head. from what I gather they’ve lost consciousness and a are a bit confused about what happened. no bump. head not that sore. i know A&E are rammed this evening. do you think they should have a ct scan though?

YANBU go to a and e they will need a scan
YABU don’t waste their time just keep an eye

I would be alarmed with no bump, wipeout and confusion yes. I would go.

Don't know anything about CT scans though.

picklemewalnuts · 22/06/2021 22:28

111 to ask advice. It's a head injury and they lost consciousness, I'd think a&e in more normal times. Get advice from 111.

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 22/06/2021 22:28

Call 111 I think

Sillawithans · 22/06/2021 22:28

The mind boggles. Of course you go.

Panaesthesia · 22/06/2021 22:28

If they genuinely lost consciousness, yes. However, you need to impress upon them the need to be truthful. You don't want to sit for 8 hours in A&E because one decided to tell a fib.

Milkteefs · 22/06/2021 22:28

You should absolutely go, I don't know why you wouldn't

georgarina · 22/06/2021 22:29

Don't have any knowledge in terms of scans but I'd ring 111 definitely

Lougle · 22/06/2021 22:29

You need to phone 111 really. Age, height of fall, what they hit their head on, whether they are responding appropriately, etc., Etc., will all influence what your next step is and it would be crazy of anyone to try to tell you what to do on here.

ghostyslovesheets · 22/06/2021 22:29

I would say no (NB as a MUM not a medically qualified professional) - unless they were out for the count

Check they are alert and okay - check through the night that they are rousable (IE they make noise/move when you shake them gently) - unless they are currently aggressive or highly confused I'd leave it for now.

I had concussion a while back and it knocked me off my feet for 2 weeks - only went to A+E when advised by GP (4 days post bang) but I am an adult

AliceSprings123 · 22/06/2021 22:30

Christ! just take him!!

PurpleReigns · 22/06/2021 22:30

111 busy so did online and says A&E. they are not fibbing.

DH thinks I am overreacting.

nocoolnamesleft · 22/06/2021 22:31

NICE algorithm says that any loss of consciousness = assess in A&E. Algorithm for when to CT a child depends upon what signs they show when assessed/under a period of observation. Short version, should be checked over, expect several hours observation, may or may not need scan.

ghostyslovesheets · 22/06/2021 22:31

re-reading your initial post - if they are still confused then yes A+E to check

PurpleReigns · 22/06/2021 22:32

He was out for less than one minute but can’t remember what really happened. genuinely.

He’s alert now. headache

DipperandMabel · 22/06/2021 22:33

Please go - better safe than sorry

LunchBoxPolice · 22/06/2021 22:33

The lack of bump from a fall that caused loss of consciousness would concern me, I’d take them to a&e.

Stormystar · 22/06/2021 22:34

Yes, this I would go with. Better to be safe, no bump and being confused would definitely warrant a visit.

Notcoolmum · 22/06/2021 22:34

Yes a&e. I'm the sort to not make a fuss and dealt with falls and broken toes. But loss of consciousness after a banged head is an a&e job.

PurpleReigns · 22/06/2021 22:34

Sorry if I sound stupid but why is no bump a concern

OP posts:
MrsTulipTattsyrup · 22/06/2021 22:35

You need to go to A&E after loss of consciousness. This from the NHS website.

A&E or no…
Alternista · 22/06/2021 22:35

Blow to head plus loss of consciousness = A&E. No messing.

smartiecake · 22/06/2021 22:35

Yes A&E!!!

PurpleReigns · 22/06/2021 22:35

I am fighting a losing battle with dh

OP posts:
MythsandSparkles · 22/06/2021 22:36

Bang on head and loss of conscious = A&E

I know they’re busy at the moment but there isn’t a single medical person in A&E who would think you were over-reacting.

Be prepared for a stay though for observation.

georgarina · 22/06/2021 22:36

Concussion isn't always immediately obvious. Any fall that results in loss of consciousness warrants a trip to A&E. Your DH is in the wrong here.
