DC mucking about upstairs. one has fallen back and hit their head. from what I gather they’ve lost consciousness and a are a bit confused about what happened. no bump. head not that sore. i know A&E are rammed this evening. do you think they should have a ct scan though?

YANBU go to a and e they will need a scan
YABU don’t waste their time just keep an eye

Any loss of consciousness and they’ll say go to a&e. Probably won’t scan though, unless serious signs of confusion etc. I had quite severe concussion, fell downstairs, knocked out, vomited etc, blue lighted to hospital after 111 sent an quick response paramedic and an ambulance - no scans, just a quick check of everything and sent home after four hours of obs, with instructions to DH to keep a close eye on me for the next week or so.

Bobbybobbins · 22/06/2021 22:37

You should go. My DS once hit head on the corner of furniture - no loss of consciousness but very big bump. Took him to minor injuries as he was only one. Chatting to the nurse they said loss of consciousness is important.

Northernlurker · 22/06/2021 22:37

Bump means the pressure is coming outward so not a problem. No bump, there could be pressure on the brain. Probably isn't but you don't muck around with head injuries and I am horrified that people were suggesting 111 or no action. This is a go straight to ED situation.

UCOinSteveArnottsPants · 22/06/2021 22:38

@PurpleReigns

Sorry if I sound stupid but why is no bump a concern
Because the swelling could be inside the skull rather than outside as far as I’m aware.
dryersheep · 22/06/2021 22:38

After a hard impact a bump shows the swelling and bleeding is coming out which is good.

No bump means it might be going inwards, building pressure on the brain rather than relieving pressure by growing a bump.

Moonflower12 · 22/06/2021 22:38

DP is a paramedic He says A&E due to loss of consciousness and confusion.

Bagelsandbrie · 22/06/2021 22:38

Of course you should go!!

You don’t need his permission to take DC! Just take them if that is 111 advice
PurpleReigns · 22/06/2021 22:39

Ok that makes sense thank you for explaining

Then leave him at home with the other child and take the injured one to hospital yourself.

Unless he is an A&E doctor or a brain injury specialist you need to follow medical advice, which the NHS website and online assessment give you.

PurpleReigns · 22/06/2021 22:40

I will take him and deal with DH tomorrow

CovIneedanamechange · 22/06/2021 22:40

Lack of bump could indicate internal swelling esp if it was hard enough or dc to lose consciousness. I’d be at a&e as this falls into the 9would I be able to forgive self if… “ category for me. Hope all’s well whatever you decide

Quartz2208 · 22/06/2021 22:40

Yes you need to.

You do have a DH issue though I cant see why anyone wouldnt want to be safe

Aquamarine1029 · 22/06/2021 22:40

Any loss of consciousness means you MUST go to A&E, immediately. Ingore your idiot of a husband.

FairlyOddmother · 22/06/2021 22:40

Just take them. Leave uninjured DC home with idiot DH

Wattonearth · 22/06/2021 22:41

Your doing the right thing. Hope they are ok
PurpleReigns · 22/06/2021 22:41

He is cross that they were messing about

FrankiesKnuckle · 22/06/2021 22:42

Paramedic. Any LOC head trauma should go to A&E.
Likely to just have neuro obs, unlikely a CT.
You'll be there for the night probably, not because they'll be admitted but that probably how long it will take. Take snacks/drinks.

Aquamarine1029 · 22/06/2021 22:42

He is cross that they were messing about

Well, that doesn't fucking matter now, does it? Your child has been hurt, ffs.

Nicknacky · 22/06/2021 22:42

Please get off mumsnet, get your child to hospital and deal with your husband after.

Northernlurker · 22/06/2021 22:43

Your dh is a twat. Good luck at the hospital.

ikeepseeingit · 22/06/2021 22:46

Yes go to hospital and tell DH the doctors were happy you brought him and didn’t think it was an overreaction. Don’t listen to your husband, always better safe than sorry. He was knocked out from it and that’s not good at all.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 22/06/2021 22:47

They will likely just check him out then monitor for a bit and only give a scan if there are any worrying signs or any deterioration in any symptoms.

But 'monitor's doesnt mean just 'keeping an eye on them' it means checking them out properly (shining light in their eyes, while moving something infront of their vision etc) so unless you're medically trained it cant really be replicated by monitoring from home.

My child knocked themselves out a couple of years ago and they only gave a scan when she was still throwing up a couple of hours later

Darkstar4855 · 22/06/2021 22:48

No bump means it might be going inwards, building pressure on the brain rather than relieving pressure by growing a bump.

This is rubbish. Growing a “bump” does not relieve pressure on your brain, your brain is inside your skull. NICE guidance for head injury in children actually specifies a bruise of more than 5cm in a child under one as being a risk factor for significant injury. “No bump” is not a risk factor.

OP your child is unlikely to need a scan but should be assessed by a qualified professional who can examine them properly. A&E is entirely reasonable.

PixieLaLa · 22/06/2021 22:51

DC hits head and had concussion and your wondering whether to take to A&E...bloody hell are you sure it wasn’t you who had a bump to the head?! Obviously you take them.
