I feel sad writing this as I have enjoyed her writing at times. I have been quite disturbed by recent developments but do still read The Times as I do still value their overall output ( their ongoing campaign on behalf of those impacted by the cladding scandal is excellent )so do still scan her articles. Today was a discussion of veganism etc. which did make some interesting points but right in the middle was the following statement
‘ I don’t much believe in hypocrisy, which is often the stupid person’s way of oversimplifying complicated and nuanced human choices’
The fact that it was written, then the fact that it wasn’t picked up by editors is astounding.
I think her position is untenable.

How very convenient for her - not to believe in hypocrisy!

Labradooodle · 20/06/2021 18:37

Blimey, I hope this tread isn't deleted because I found the last one interesting but it was deleted for not being in the spirit of mn.

Good points were raised though.

MsFenellaFielding · 20/06/2021 18:37

She is insufferable.

SpindleWhorl · 20/06/2021 18:37

That doesn't even make sense.

Labradooodle · 20/06/2021 18:38

It makes sense to her I bet! mired in cognitive dissonance as she must be.

Tacono1 · 20/06/2021 18:39

@bluelemmingYes, hypocrisy is something that stupid people point out because the don’t really understand !
I really think The Times need to act

Labradooodle · 20/06/2021 18:39

So what she calls a complicated and nuanced choice, I'm going to call it her blind spot.

whiteroseredrose · 20/06/2021 18:40

She's one of the reasons we stopped getting the Sunday Times. Smug and sneery.

SpindleWhorl · 20/06/2021 18:40

For a journalist, she strikes me as someone who is only as good with words as their expensive education allows.

RandomLondoner · 20/06/2021 18:42

I'm not sure what she meant, without reading the whole article, but I think I agree with her. The exact example I have in mind is this: would an MP who campaigns for the abolition of private education be a hypocrite if they were at the same time sending their own children to a private school? I would say no, or not necessarily, but I bet 99% of people would say yes, and I would say that in doing so they are displaying a lack of critical thinking skills.

I'm also not sure why you think there is anything outrageous about what she's saying. She may or may not have a point, but it's not outragous to be wrong.

Maybe I have understood your post. Or even what she meant. My dinners calling, so don't have time to dwell on it.

RandomLondoner · 20/06/2021 18:42

not understood

CardinalLolzy · 20/06/2021 18:46

@SpindleWhorl

That doesn't even make sense.
I know! I can't parse it?! ‘ I don’t much believe in hypocrisy, which is often the stupid person’s way of oversimplifying complicated and nuanced human choices’

Does she mean accusations of hypocrisy rather than actually being hypocritical? That would make more sense... right?

SpindleWhorl · 20/06/2021 18:49

If I were editing that, @CardinalLolzy, I'd say, 'Do you mean to write "I don't much believe that allegations of hypocrisy are true"?'

DulseSeaweed · 20/06/2021 18:59

Can't stand the woman or anything she writes now. I'm not sure I follow the point she's attempting to make there but am unsurprised she continues merrily publishing drivel whilst her child lives elsewhere so she can continue a relationship with a paedophile.

Peacelillyhippy · 20/06/2021 19:03

don’t much believe in hypocrisy, which is often the stupid person’s way of oversimplifying complicated and nuanced human choices’

I am only a physical scientist. But I can't understand that.

For a start how can you not believe in hypocrisy? It isn't a faith for which there is no factual basis.

Is she saying that only "stupid" people "believe" in hypocrisy because they are incapable of critical thinking? Intelligent people do not recognise hypocrisy as a concept?

No...I think i may have it: people who have accused others of hypocrisy are stupid because they have not applied critical thinking. However, according to her hypocrisy doesn't exist...so there are no stupid people??!!!

Fuck this, i'll stick to maths. That sentence is too difficult for me.

PS how does this relate to veganism? Or has IK been accused of hypocrisy?

SpindleWhorl · 20/06/2021 19:04

Or has IK been accused of hypocrisy?

Oh yes.

Mamette · 20/06/2021 19:05

I don’t much believe in being a complete tit.

ScribblyBaller · 20/06/2021 19:05

I used to find her so irritating, all those self-satisfied books on how people should live their lives.

But now, I cannot stand her. She has wealth and connections and all the opportunities to remove herself from her relationship if she should wish. But she clearly wants to stay with him, and to continue on with her career of silly books and silly columns.

Nothing nuanced about the choices you've made, India.

Makes me nauseous.

Serenster · 20/06/2021 19:09

She is basically saying “I make complicated and nuanced decisions. If you call me a hypocrite because of my decision, it is only because first, you’re oversimplifying the situation, and secondly, you’re stupid”.

Sp, people who call her a hypocrite =stupid people who just don’t understand the complicated position she’s in (it’s not that complicated…).

Peacelillyhippy · 20/06/2021 19:09

I don’t much believe in being a complete tit.

GrinGrinGrin

Can I borrow that for life?

GulliBelle · 20/06/2021 19:16

Is she still with Eric?

Labradooodle · 20/06/2021 19:23

She's the idiot. Nobody has to have a boyfriend. It's a choice, especially for a woman with such absolute financial independence. What is remotely nuanced about that? She's choosing him over ............. people's respect.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 20/06/2021 19:40

would an MP who campaigns for the abolition of private education be a hypocrite if they were at the same time sending their own children to a private school? I would say no, or not necessarily, but I bet 99% of people would say yes, and I would say that in doing so they are displaying a lack of critical thinking skills

Can you explain that more? What’s the nuance that means it isn’t hypocritical?

Labradooodle · 20/06/2021 20:15

Yes, I'd like to understand that too! It would seem to me like I the MP got to make that decision but I want to remove that choice for other people. I must be stupid.

Susie477 · 20/06/2021 20:24

The exact example I have in mind is this: would an MP who campaigns for the abolition of private education be a hypocrite if they were at the same time sending their own children to a private school? Please explain, because that is just about the most egregious example of blatant hypocrisy I can think of. Unless your name is Diane Abbott, of course. Or Shami Chakrabarti.
