I work in a nursery. We are permanently understaffed and can never seem to encourage applicants.I notice this is a common theme among nurseries struggling to recruit staff. So out of interest just wanted to know what would put people of working in a nursery? Yes pay is normally minimum wage could it be that? Or working with children in general? Just interested to hear opinions.

My SIL worked in a nursery. All of the above were relevant. The pay is poor, it is hard responsible work. Some parents are lovely. Some are not nice and treat the staff like some form of servant and can be incredibly demanding. One asked my SIL to follow her daughter round with a cushion in case she fell at any point, and got very annoyed when told that this was not possible! In terms of hours, very often parents are late and staff are expected to stop until a pick up takes place. Complaints are regular and can feel devastating- my SIL faced an allegation from a parent that she had pinched a child- absolutely untrue, but you can understand that all allegations have to be taken seriously. All in all, Morrisons or Tescos is much more attractive and tends to pay better with more flexibility and definite hours.

@mumofwildthings There is way way more to working with children then wiping bums and noses .

mumofwildthings · 22/06/2021 10:49

Of course there is, but wiping is part of the job, and something that I wouldnt want to do. Therefore, like the pay and hours, is a reason I woukdnt apply. Also an intense dislike for crying. Horses for courses.

@mumofwildthings it is yeah but you get used to it, when you’ve been a nanny for 11 years you have worse things to deal with lol 😂
