To be incredibly proud of Scotland?

A close family member playing for Scotland tonight, been sitting at the edge of our seats all night. He said not to celebrate, not a big deal. AIBU to think it is a big fucking deal that they have a point over England!? I am buzzing, but told to calm down. AIBU to think this is actually amazing and a step in the right direction??

Your fans were a disgrace trashing London, my home.

Every bit of footage I've seen looks incredibly good natured. The police all looked to be in good humour too unlike when they are dealing with local issues where people are being injured left right and centre. Yes there is mess - some are helping to clean it. This is true of any large gathering anyway . Fairly liquid In a fountain isn't harming anyone or anything. The only issue i see is the huge covid spike in Scotland next week just in time for our well needed summer holidays but that's our problem not yours.

tigger1001 · 19/06/2021 09:14
@tigger1001 1966 is always brought up Hmm ! I don't think I've seen a Scottish commentator during this tournament yet on the BBC when I've watched- correct me if I'm wrong.
We watched on itv last night. So were spared the bbc commentary.

I'm a big tennis fan and 1966 reference was shoehorned in there on more than one occasion. It just gets tiresome.

moonbedazzled · 19/06/2021 09:15

I'm English and I think its fantastic that Scotland are just enjoying being part of the competition and are celebrating every point to the max.

In contrast for England, qualifying is just the start of the inevitable disappointment that accompanies the side wherever they play. Eleven multi millionaires who think that just turning up is doing everyone a favour, they don't show any pride in playing for their country and are devoid of passion. I'd rather for one competition have a team of amateurs represent the country. They might get slaughtered in each game, but it would be brilliant to watch them just loving it. It would really mean something to them.

Why cant we just enjoy each others achievements and not resort to pulling each other down. After all, it's not like any of the three countries are going to win the competition anyway.

dementedma · 19/06/2021 09:17

If your brother is Billy Gilmour, he had a great game. However the overall game was dull. Scotland packed their defence, England didnt seem bothered about a win as qualifying in second place is a better option. Tuesday should be more exciting with more at stake.

PearlclutchersInc · 19/06/2021 09:21

Get a grip. God almighty, the carry on for a 0-0 draw. A draw? Hardly an out and out win. Is that what we're reduced to, being grateful for a draw?

It happens every single time, the optimism before having the socks beaten off them. The current odds are 2:1 against Croatia.

(tired from neighbour noise in Glasgow)

cloudymaydays · 19/06/2021 09:22

Ah wow op you must be very proud of your lil bro!!
I thought Scotland played really well.
I'm English but happy for any of our home sides to do well.

MrsLangOnionsMcWeetabix · 19/06/2021 09:25

You absolutely should be proud! I think our attitude (and that of a lot of the other smaller countries) is brilliant and what football should be about. It’s nice to see a bit of joy at being a part of it all and doing better than we were expected to. I wouldn’t have it any other way although I always have a backup team to support when Scotland are inevitably knocked out or don’t qualify in the first place Grin

Unhomme · 19/06/2021 09:26

Ha ha ha.

Scotland haven't scored a goal in a competitive competition since 1998.

And they celebrate a nil nil draw.

Celebrate mediocrity all you want!!!

England, on the other hand, were woeful.

BonesJones · 19/06/2021 09:27

Laughing at the English on here having a bip about the Scottish fans. English fans are absolute notorious cunts! Nice one Scotland. Seriously well played. Was an enjoyable game and they gave it their all! However now hoping both England and Scotland need to lose their next matches (Welsh woman here 😆)

ConstantlySeekingHappiness · 19/06/2021 09:28

So bitter 😂😂😂😂

Toty · 19/06/2021 09:32

Like others well done for your brother for being picked but really don’t think a game that ends a draw is a win, even if ‘on paper’ one side was better then the other…obviously not as no side scored. confused

Then you don't understand Scotland or Scottish football.

Congrats to your wee bro OP, can't even imagine the level of excitement in your house last night Grin.

Scautish · 19/06/2021 09:36

To those trying to dampen our spirits by saying “it’s only a draw how pathetic”, it is a big deal because

 • if we had lost we would have been out the competition
 • we now have a small chance of qualifying for knock-out stages - home match against Croatia - we could win (though certainly not a given)
 • this was England at home. England were overwhelming favourites not just to win, but to win easily
 • England ranked 4th in world, Scotland 44th
 • it is a huge rivalry.
 • we played magnificently. It was a performance of which the team can be enormously proud and we appreciate that massively
 • and on a personal note, I’m delighted for my son who was teased all day yesterday (we live in England) about the fact he supported Scotland and that Scotland are rubbish. He’s going to be able to go to school with a smile on his face on Monday

So honestly, please take your negativity, your condescension, your anti-Scottish views to another thread. The OP’s wee brother and all
Of his teammates did us proud and we are going to be bloody happy about it.

Ladylunchalot · 19/06/2021 09:36

Op, congrats to your wee bro, they all played great last night and were unlucky not to be the outright winners. They played their hearts out and done us proud.......still slightly hoarse here Grin

BashfulClam · 19/06/2021 09:37

We know and we accept we are shite but it’s this type of attitude that means we refuse to support england if we are not playing in the competition. Also every bloody commentary is about it ‘coming home and 1966’ I counted on a World Cup several years ago Adrian Chiles mentioned 1966 8 times in a 13 minute segment ffs! In the last World Cup the first game which wasn’t an England game it got I half time and within 3 seconds they had mentioned Gareth Southgate. Then no they went over to Gabby Logan at the England camp….we had to sit and endure that utter shite every time so forgive us for being a tiny hit happy.
Run21 · 19/06/2021 09:40

First few responses to this are a good example of why England and Scotland need to split. As the song goes, "you can't play on broken strings"

Scautish · 19/06/2021 09:41

@Unhomme

Can you boogie-woogie?

We can.

MaMelon · 19/06/2021 09:43

@moonbedazzled - hear hear, well said 👏

MaybeCrazy2 · 19/06/2021 09:46

I think overall England is a better team than Scotland, but they played well and I think it’s great you are buzzing about it, celebrate your heart out, why not?

BashfulClam · 19/06/2021 09:47

Also @Unhomme when did you last win an international tournament? 55 years…many counties have won far more times than England. Also maybe look at the population split, a bigger population and more money to throw at it means a bigger talent pool. So enjoy mediocrity as you have done it well for 55 years so far.

MaybeCrazy2 · 19/06/2021 09:50

Let’s be honest, if England was too get knocked out and Scotland still in the whole of the U.K. would be rooting for them. Football divides us until it brings us together, it’s funny like that!

It would be lovely for ANY U.K. team to win really.

Bryonyshcmyony · 19/06/2021 09:51

England are the far better team (although uninspiring last night) but Scotland had a kind of scrappy heart and good defenders. They are going to have to improve their finishing if they want to do well against Croatia though.

adawong · 19/06/2021 09:56

Haha would they fuck.

SueSaid · 19/06/2021 09:59

'Ha ha ha.'

'Scotland haven't scored a goal in a competitive competition since 1998.'

'And they celebrate a nil nil draw.'

'Celebrate mediocrity all you want!!!'

Indeed. It was all so very dull wasn't it. I'm not a football fan but try to be interested with big games but omg, the exciting build up the roar of the crowds then it just fizzles out to a load of dull crap.

As an aside how would Nicola have reacted to thousands of English fans pitching up in Glasgow without tickets, she'd be doing her pursed lipped/wobbly head thing telling them off on telly as we speak.

MaMelon · 19/06/2021 09:59

Did you type that with a straight face? Absolute rubbish!! Grin
