Do you find it funny when people trip over?

I have friends that are, on the whole, generally polite. We are in our 30s. When it comes to a member of our group tripping over though, that all goes to shit and everyone thinks it's bloody hilarious! I remember being at school and if anyone tripped over, they would always be greeted by a "wheeyyyy" and a clap. I genuinely have never found it funny, but wondered what other people think?

@Iminaglasscaseofemotion

I have seen people laugh at me, and film me on their phones for something a lot more serious than a trip over a paving slab.

That must have made you feel even worse.

It was a very public suicide attempt. I could hear people's comments and see their phones.

I do have a weird sense of humour. Gallows humour. I used to move patients that had passed on (kids) to the mortuary, and help them into some nice clothes for viewings from their parents. So if I snigger a little at someone falling over, forgive me. I can't help it. I take any bit of humour where I can right now.

Triphazards · 14/06/2021 21:05

It was probably the first ever joke.

KeepingTrack · 14/06/2021 21:06

You haven’t answered the question though @XenoBitch.

Interesting.

I think that was a fart joke Grin

Interesting.

I thought I did. I said my initial reaction would be a laugh.
Baycitystroller · 14/06/2021 21:09

Not really. I tripped over a dodgy kerb and broke my leg. Was out of action for months with ongoing problems. So no. Not particularly funny.

KeepingTrack · 14/06/2021 21:09

I know a few people working in that sort of environment.
They would agree that dark humour is what gets them through.

They would also say, it’s a different kettle of fish because they are never laughing at people. Or in the vicinity of those who would be hurt by what would be seen as callous by everyone else.

Roundtoedshoes · 14/06/2021 21:10

It’s cruel to laugh IMO. My first reaction would always be concern. But I can see that some people find it hilarious. I actually find it bizarre people enjoy You’ve been framed. I watched some family members watching it once and was disappointed in their delight. I don’t get it!

MaMelon · 14/06/2021 21:10

Still weird @XenoBitch

I have two family members who have dealt with paediatric deaths, a friend who is an undertaker and a friend who’s a paramedic - their first reaction to someone falling isn’t to laugh (especially when it’s a child).

Justme10 · 14/06/2021 21:10

@Jahebejrjr

I can relate to that *@Justme10* It feels like some sort of coping mechanism to laugh. DP and I have had a rough ride at some points in our lives but we still keep going and we are still smiling.
Keep smiling and keep going, makes life a little brighter Smile

If someone notices me snorting more air out of my nostrils than usual (the extent of my laugh) then they were watching me to start with.
KeepingTrack · 14/06/2021 21:11

@XenoBitch

You’ve laughed.

How will you feel about it?
Will you be to look at A in the eyes whilst helping them, knowing 10 seconds ago you were laughing at them?

Weird? So what, Weird is not illegal.
MaMelon · 14/06/2021 21:12

It’s not whether people notice you snorting - it that it’s your very first reaction, esp if that person is a child.

I am far too anxious a person to help another. I am ashamed of that but I am owning it.

MaMelon · 14/06/2021 21:14

Weird is also not a healthy or particularly kind reaction to a stranger falling @XenoBitch

3scape · 14/06/2021 21:14

No I get this all over sort of body wince when I see someone fall. Or a little muscular spasm in my knee if they land on a knee.

Honestly I'd question the trustworthiness of someone laughing rather than show I g empathy.

EmpressSuiko · 14/06/2021 21:17

Yup but only if they aren’t hurt, I even laugh at myself when I fall over!

It is private, and only I know. I don't go up to the person and laugh in their face.
BiscoffAddict · 14/06/2021 21:18

I think it’s hilarious. The best was when my DM got drunk at DB and DSIL’s house, tripped over the step and rolled across the kitchen floor. It was like a comedy fall.

MaMelon · 14/06/2021 21:19

Christ I’d hope not @XenoBitch Confused

You still laugh though. At kids falling over. At people falling over. Before you even know if they’re ok.

StrongerThanA90sTrend · 14/06/2021 21:21

It depends. A serious fall, no, I wouldn't laugh. But a stumble, or similar, yeah. I would. I laugh at myself when I trip. Sometimes it's funny. Sometimes it isn't.

SappysCurry · 14/06/2021 21:23

Stop already with the hilarious anecdotes or I won’t have any

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 14/06/2021 21:23

3scape that reminds me of a thread posted years ago on MN.

It was about getting "fanny pains" (or did they call it lightening fanny?) when you see your child fall or almost fall. So many posters related to it.

Does anyone remember that? :o

Like I said, it is not something I can help. Not sure I should be calling my GP and ask for therapy about this sort of thing tbh. Tripping over is slapstick. If I was laughing at beheading videos, yeah there might be a problem there.
