crying woman dilemma

This morning I opened the door to a distraught woman. After I'd managed to calm her down a bit it seems her Husband has told her their marriage is over because he is in love with me. This was a bit of a surprise because I don't actually know this man. She wants me to talk to him and tell him I'm not interested. What would you do it feels he's a bit stalkerish and I definitely don't want to be giving him any encouragement by speaking to him. I do really feel for his poor wife

I'd be shocked if someone said all that to me, I'd initially assume mistaken identity (BC haa no one will love me!) But this bit:
She wants me to talk to him and tell him I'm not interested would really freak me out. So you're expected to go to see a man you don't know to tell him you don't fancy him. Hmm...

That would just not go well, ever.

There is no way on earth I would have gone and spoken to him. I'm thinking definite scam now I got caught on the back foot thank goodness I didn't let her in

There's been a lot of these a-stranger-contacted-me/my husband-and-said-my husband/I-is-cheating-with-their-spouse threads lately. A lot of drama and mystery them BOOM. Deleted.

If this happened then why did you not ask the woman instead of closing the door and asking Mumsnet to solve it for you?

Thieves scam to either get you out of the house so they can break in; or distract you at one door while partner gets in the back door. forward details to police.

So she told you all that but you didn’t think to ask who her husband was, how he knows you? But you know he doesn’t know you? How do you know that?

So when you didn’t recognise his name... you didn’t ask anything else?

You asked "what would you do". I would have asked who he was, said I've no idea who he is, and told her to tell her husband to go give another excuse for ending his marriage.

And it's not that weird. Guy wants out of his marriage > gives wife random name > wife goes full-Google and tracks down the name. It's not that difficult to do.

@regularsizedrudy and @BadNomad I wasn't really ready with questions like I said it was weird Judging by what some other posters are saying it looks like it might be a scam anyway

This sounds like one of those movies where you have no idea what the hell is going on but you still watch because it's all so intriguing!

I think it’s a scam….however, check all your social media security settings because if there’s a chance you have a secret online stalker (who’s wife has stumbled on his browsing history), it could be that your online presence gives too much away about you and your personal info?

Very odd indeed.

Isn't this a well known scam to get inside and 'case the joint'? A Good Samaritan may invite her inside to calm her down and find out more... I'm sure I read about this in the paper a few years ago. It was happening around Camden at the time.
