Fucking barbecues

I live in a quiet part of a street, and we're mid terrace. Every neighbour has decided to have a fucking barbecue, every day. Don't get me wrong, it's up too them in their own gardens but does no one have any common courtesy anymore to knock or shout over the fence as say 'oh we're having a barbecue, you might want to take your washing in!' I'm getting so sick of it. We can't have a out back doors open because the smell is so strong and the smoke so intense it just smothers everything. I used to really love summer and now thanks to people who really don't give a shit, it gets ruined. Can't sit in the garden as you other get smoked out of some twat kicks a fucking ball over the fence, or even worse at your fence. Roll on a lottery win so I can move to a house in a big field!

Oh god I can’t be pandering to my neighbours every time I want to put a BBQ on. She’s got her washing out at 6am every single day.

DuchessofDenmarkStreet · 13/06/2021 23:20

I'm totally with you OP. If you live on a terraced street and every sodding weekend, three or four houses do it, it gets unbearable. I can cope with the noise but the stench and the smoke are so horrible.

Kickthedoorbaby · 13/06/2021 23:27

Here here. I’m in bed with a fan on and windows closed because our whole town stinks of smoke at 11.30pm. It’s ridiculous. Maybe a fire in this case but it’s just so out of order

flowerpowerss · 14/06/2021 17:22

Are you a vegan by any chance?

SemiFeralDalek · 14/06/2021 17:28

It could be worse OP, the restaurant at the end of my road has one going from 9am till about 9pm, every day Grin

I've got a chippy one end, BBQ the other, an Italian, Chinese and Indian all within sniffing distance depending on which way the wind is blowing! It just makes me hungry!

TheChosenTwo · 14/06/2021 17:36

We have bbqs about 4 times a week in this weather. Love them. Kitchen doesn’t get hot and we all spend more time outdoors.
I don’t hang washing outside though!
Just keep playing the lottery and once you’ve won you won’t have a problem with neighbours anymore!

wingsanddreams · 14/06/2021 17:41

I'm with you. People should be more considerate, especially when the garden sizes are limited. With a large/long gardens, it's less of an issue as they can do it at the back of their gardens. You neighbours could at least knock on your door so you could bring your laundry in. A friend of mine loves her BBQs, she always informs her neighbours before she has a BBQ, and then takes a plate of BBQ food to each of her neighbours when the party starts.

Piglet89 · 14/06/2021 17:44

Bbq's not bonfires although from the amount of fatty smoke they generate they might as well be bonfires!

OP’s clearly never experienced the Glorious Twelfth in Northern Ireland.

Jemzy30 · 14/06/2021 17:44

@ErykahBaddy

I wish people would knock on my door to let me know when they're hanging their washing out. The smell of fresh laundry can really spoil a good barbecue.
Hahahaha that made me giggle! Lenor smelling sausages 😂
Demelza82 · 14/06/2021 17:48

Ah I love barbeques mmmmmmm

BountyIsUnderrated · 14/06/2021 17:57

/yawn go live in the countryside. Biscuit

Justgorgeous · 14/06/2021 17:58

I wouldn’t dream of expecting anyone to tell me they are having a BBQ. It’s a normal way of cooking food in the summer. I cooked veggie food on ours yesterday and my washing was out - totally no smell. Are people just that miserable ???

Lokdok · 14/06/2021 18:05

So the way you like to enjoy summer isn’t the same way the majority like to enjoy summer. This seems like a you problem!! As if people should warn neighbours about bbqs!! If they’re inviting 30 people then yeah sure, but seriously come on...

Lokdok · 14/06/2021 18:07

@wingsanddreams who would do a bbq at the back of their long garden!? All that bringing stuff in and out, no thanks.

Quaggars · 14/06/2021 18:10

YABU
Love it when the sun's out and you can smell people having a BBQ, laughter, and people gathering playing/talking in their back gardens.
Especially after the crappy year we've all had, people having fun outside together seems a sense of normality!

Bertiebiscuit · 14/06/2021 18:10

Totally with you - my neighbours regularly incinerate animal carcasses, drink, play music and shout a lot in their back garden - the smell makes me feel sick, the noise is unbearable and it all makes me hate them - bbqs are for mindless goons

mbosnz · 14/06/2021 18:14

Mmmmmm, incinerated animal carcasses. . . light the barbie DH, pronto! (She bellows).

DrSbaitso · 14/06/2021 18:15

Careful, or there'll be a flame war.
lazylinguist · 14/06/2021 18:19

I love the smell of a bbq, whether it's ours or someone else's. Except (rarely) on MN,I have never even heard of the concept of warning the neighbours so they can get their washing in. I'd take my washing in if we were barbecuing, but not if a neighbour was!

mbosnz · 14/06/2021 18:20

That Barbie too, but not on the barbie, because that would create noxious fumes, and that would be very distressing for the neighbours - all that plastic. . .

Pret50 · 14/06/2021 18:25

Yanbu. Noticed my washing stinks of BBQ odour from yesterday. No issues with BBQs , love them myself but if my neighbour has just warned me I would have got it in.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/06/2021 18:33

@DrSbaitso

Ninkanink · 14/06/2021 18:37

Haven’t RTFT.

There are quite obviously two camps on this (as on so many other topics) -

I get really happy when I smell a bbq in the air...cheers me up every time. I always feel a little bit envious too.

However my children are grown up now and I don’t have any issues with noise, and I do understand that it can get tedious if one can never enjoy one’s own garden in peace.
