Fucking barbecues

Polodriversclub · 13/06/2021 18:54

I live in a quiet part of a street, and we're mid terrace. Every neighbour has decided to have a fucking barbecue, every day. Don't get me wrong, it's up too them in their own gardens but does no one have any common courtesy anymore to knock or shout over the fence as say 'oh we're having a barbecue, you might want to take your washing in!' I'm getting so sick of it. We can't have a out back doors open because the smell is so strong and the smoke so intense it just smothers everything. I used to really love summer and now thanks to people who really don't give a shit, it gets ruined. Can't sit in the garden as you other get smoked out of some twat kicks a fucking ball over the fence, or even worse at your fence. Roll on a lottery win so I can move to a house in a big field!

I love the smell of BBQ. And the sound of cutlery and people enjoying themselves.

EvilPea · 13/06/2021 20:27

We’ve just had a bbq but didn’t light it until 6 when most washing would be in.
I know it’s annoying so try to do it at a sensible time for all

@Biancadelrioisback

How do you dry your washing in the winter? Can't you just do that?
On a massive airer that gets in the way. Clothes take 24 hours to dry on there - far less outside.

We have a washer dryer in case of emergency, but I’m not sure using a dryer on a day like today is really the thing to do!

Now that I could get behind. Even if it was “bbqs likely after 4pm”. It’s the uncertainty (and I live in Wales so have to check for rain every 8 seconds too!).

@NoIDontWatchLoveIsland

Try being vegan, it's depressing to sit outside and have to smell burning corpse from every other garden

Gosh your neighbours are boring. Round our way people put all sorts on barbecues. We do this great smoky beans dish, halloumi, peppers, mushrooms, aubergines & corn on the cob on ours. Yes some meat too but it's just like any other form of cooking, it's not limited to meat.

But presumably you and your neighbours also cook meat on them alongside all that other stuff?
Diamondnights · 13/06/2021 20:31

I think you need a hobby other than laundry OP! Just don't put it out on hot summer avos? Goodness knows, we don't have that many of them!

moynomore · 13/06/2021 20:32

I'm from Canada and think the bbq hate in this country is hilarious. We bbq all year round. It's just another cooking appliance and no one ever would complain.

Haenow · 13/06/2021 20:32

@Babygotblueyes

Had to come in today and close all the windows, neighbours 2 over had bbq smoking so badly I could not stop coughing. They were inside their house and not affected, it was blowing straight in my direction. No idea what the fuck they did to make it smoke so badly, I have never seen anything likely.
@Babygotblueyes

Do you have bad allergies, asthma or chronic lung disease? If not, it’s very unusual to cough that much.

readytosell · 13/06/2021 20:33

Must admit I was really annoyed with all the BBQs today.

Only because I've run out of gas and waiting for more to be delivered Grin

Put the heating on during a 27 day?

With you on that. As I said on a different thread, it's bit weird smelling bbq at 3pm. If people were reasonable and used them at normal meal times (we usually do 7pm) half the aggro wouldn't exist

Same. No care to share the smoky bean dish recipe?

It's because half the people can't actually bbq😂
5zeds · 13/06/2021 20:35

I bbq everyday from now till about mid September. Grin

moynomore · 13/06/2021 20:36

Oh now I'm reminded to get the cedar plank out for salmon next weekend.

cabingirl · 13/06/2021 20:36

Lots of people don't clean their BBQs and grill properly so a lot of the smoking is old fat that's burning off. A clean grill, with white coals (no fire), or a hot gas fuel - will not create drifting smoke. Even 'smokers' won't affect the neighbours if done properly because the smoke is kept within the smoker to work properly.

OP you have my sympathy if you are surrounded by greasy fat fire smoke every week.

Armi · 13/06/2021 20:38

I can understand your frustration, but I have been loving hearing people enjoying themselves in their gardens with friends, hearing glasses clinking and smelling the barbecues. However it probably helps that, being on the edge of a village in the sticks, we are not sandwiched between lots of gardens in a terrace so are not on top of each other.

Do you use a gas-fired grill or just coals?

I'm in the USA and we have both but for our daily meal in summer we mainly use the gas grill - it hardly ever smokes unless husband someone didn't clean the fat off properly from the pork products.

Also I bet you have more space in your back yard than a terrace street in the UK. The distace from the smokey BBQ makes a huge difference in neighbourly relations. Changes it from a mmmmm something good is cooking smell to a throat clogging nightmare.

dementedma · 13/06/2021 20:41

Think I'm one of the few people who.just doesn't get the BBQ love. So.much faff and hassle lugging everything outside, and then back in again. We might have one a year if I can be arsed.

WokeFest · 13/06/2021 20:41

Sorry, OP, it's just too bad. Tomorrow we are being told that we are not being unlocked and we have to go about our business wearing a facemask and having unenjoyable meals out with a mask on and plastic screen between the tables. Oh, the joy.

It's hot and it is summer. People are trying to get on with it and boost their own morale, including being out and having a BBQ.

I've had them every night as I have had an outdoor kitchen built and I don't care who they bug. I'm just trying to maintain everyone's sanity.

Trying365 · 13/06/2021 20:43

100% with you, OP. As soon as there's even a tiny bit of sun out come the bbqs and any chance of me line drying my washing.

We moved recently to a part of town surrounded by pensioners bungalows - never have this problem now! Absolutely love it Grin

moynomore · 13/06/2021 20:43

True. Fair enough, we use "patio gas" or propane. Doesn't really smoke. We have a lovely Weber. In a small terrace though.

Babygotblueyes · 13/06/2021 20:48

@Haenow - nope, none of those. But there were clouds of billowing smoke blowing straight into my garden, also had watering eyes from it. Fuck knows what they did. My old neighbours were south african, had bbqs all the time with no problems. I used to live in Florida, similar, never had an issue.

@moynomore - it is because so many people here have no idea how to actually do it, so make a nuisance of themselves.

DoubleTweenQueen · 13/06/2021 20:48

I don’t think you’re being unreasonable. I don’t get the need to bbq so often either.
Eating outside every day, I understand, but that doesn’t need to include smoking out the neighbours.

shushymcshush · 13/06/2021 20:49

I'm with you @Polodriversclub some BBQs absolutely stink!
