Fucking barbecues

Polodriversclub · 13/06/2021 18:54

I live in a quiet part of a street, and we're mid terrace. Every neighbour has decided to have a fucking barbecue, every day. Don't get me wrong, it's up too them in their own gardens but does no one have any common courtesy anymore to knock or shout over the fence as say 'oh we're having a barbecue, you might want to take your washing in!' I'm getting so sick of it. We can't have a out back doors open because the smell is so strong and the smoke so intense it just smothers everything. I used to really love summer and now thanks to people who really don't give a shit, it gets ruined. Can't sit in the garden as you other get smoked out of some twat kicks a fucking ball over the fence, or even worse at your fence. Roll on a lottery win so I can move to a house in a big field!

Also the smell of barbecues is delicious. I wouldn't mind even if my clothes did smell of it Grin

diddlediddledump · 13/06/2021 19:59

I love people doing bbq's!! It's literally like the only normal thing left to do in this fucked up world right now.

DynamoKev · 13/06/2021 20:00

Fuck me barbecues are the new fireworks - who knew.

aliensprig · 13/06/2021 20:02

Try being vegan, it's depressing to sit outside and have to smell burning corpse from every other garden Sad

ErykahBaddy · 13/06/2021 20:03

I wish people would knock on my door to let me know when they're hanging their washing out. The smell of fresh laundry can really spoil a good barbecue.

Workinghardeveryday · 13/06/2021 20:03

I love bbqs we had one today. I would however be seriously pissed off if I was op and I had washing out or to get out!

That's true. I'm vegetarian and my neighbour has regular barbecues. Always smells so delicious and makes me wistful.

Thats the reason i hate neighbours doing them, cos I'm not invited Grin

There's always one! Grin

I stoked up the BBQ yesterday to roast an aubergine, a sweet potato, some ears of corn and a head of broccoli. There's a delicious aubergine puy lentil chilli recipe on BBC site but you need to parch the aubergine and we have an induction hob which isn't good for that. The sweet potato and corn went into another chilli with black beans and the broccoli is just delicious on the BBQ - marinade it in olive oil, garlic, lemon and soy sauce.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 13/06/2021 20:11

Our bbq really doesnt generate much smoke at all.if there's tons of smoke people are doing it wrong.

roguetomato · 13/06/2021 20:12

We don't do BBQ ourselves but I love the smell of it. I don't mind it at all. Though I don't appreciate late night drunken karaoke.

toolazytothinkofausername · 13/06/2021 20:13

YANBU.

We used to live next door to a BBQ fanatic :(

Normal BBQ: Use hot coals to cook food on grill.
Our neighbour: Start a fire in a bin causing loads of gross smoke, put a grill over the top to cook the meat on then don't put out the fire for many hours later.

My washing was constantly being ruined by their gross BBQs.

You have my sympathies :(

Gosh your neighbours are boring. Round our way people put all sorts on barbecues. We do this great smoky beans dish, halloumi, peppers, mushrooms, aubergines & corn on the cob on ours. Yes some meat too but it's just like any other form of cooking, it's not limited to meat.

Lsquiggles · 13/06/2021 20:15

We hang washing out in the morning and in this heat it's dry by midday, round here noone bbqs that early - can you do something similar?

Katjolo · 13/06/2021 20:15

Insane 😂

coogee · 13/06/2021 20:15

We did our Sunday roast on ours today.

No smoke, just the smell of roasting chicken corpse.

Wincarnis · 13/06/2021 20:15

My neighbours are having a barbecue right now, with the telly in the garden so they can watch footballl

Ickythefirebobby · 13/06/2021 20:16

You’re massively over reacting. A bbq or even several bbqs doesn’t cause that much smoke. Don’t be miserable, people are enjoying the summer.

JaninaDuszejko · 13/06/2021 20:16

I'm 50, lived in various places round the UK from the far north to the south, and the only time people inform their neighbours is when they are inviting them to the BBQ.

Seriously OP, you are the one that is out of step with normal behaviour. I had never heard of anyone telling their neighbours to take their washing in when they are BBQing. Hell, I don't take my own washing in when BBQing myself. We don't BBQ anywhere near the washing line so why would we?

DrSbaitso · 13/06/2021 20:18

@osbertthesyrianhamster

The hyperbole on these threads is always amusing. The whole house is filled with smoke, everyone is choking and coughing, the washing smells like an abattoir, they BBQ morning noon and night, the smell of burning flesh gives the OP complex PTSD etc etc.
Have to say I agree. I can accept that people don't like the smell, can even accept that they might whiff the washing a bit if the gardens are small or the bbq is very close to the neighbour's line, but the hyperbole is like the woman who claimed she wants to vomit and faint the whole time she's ever in McDonald's.

(She doesn't. I can accept that she might not like the oily smell.)

Babygotblueyes · 13/06/2021 20:18

Had to come in today and close all the windows, neighbours 2 over had bbq smoking so badly I could not stop coughing. They were inside their house and not affected, it was blowing straight in my direction. No idea what the fuck they did to make it smoke so badly, I have never seen anything likely.

FreekStar · 13/06/2021 20:19

I don't mind anyone having a Bbq, but my next door neighbours teenage son has a bunch of mates over- first they had a BBQ at lunch time right outside the house before the football started- despite having a a garden about 100ms long, they have now been playing football since 4pm and it's 8'15pm- shouting, whooping, burping, cheering, jeering etc. They've kicked the ball over the fence several times. We have had out own BBQ while this has been going on- my dream of a relaxing day and drinking wine and having candles lit in the evening is fast disappearing. Some people are completely unaware of anyone else.

Biancadelrioisback · 13/06/2021 20:22

How do you dry your washing in the winter? Can't you just do that?

NavigatingAdolescence · 13/06/2021 20:25

It’s a toss up between the one opportunity for a lie in (house of owls that conform to society’s lark preference through the week) and getting clothes dry. :(

Today, as it happens, I did get it all out before the day was in double figures, then rewarded myself with an afternoon nap. Grin

UpSlyDown · 13/06/2021 20:26

OP you’re being unreasonble. I have loads of neighbours no way am I going to knock on all their doors to let them know we are having a bbq. It’s a glorious day- assume neighbour will be bbq-Ing! We have a range of neighbours and one group of young professional friends who often play music/guitar, drink in the sun/occasionally smoke weed later in the evening on a summers day. We rub along well next to them even with small kids (only once have I gone round asking them to tone down the cannabis when mid afternoon and kids were playing out). They were hugely apologetic and it stopped. I love neighbour noise in the garden since covid it’s made me feel connected to others!
