Would you pay £18 for this as a main in a posh restaurant?

Ordered what I thought was a salmon fillet from the mains, this is what arrived…it was £18. I’m gutted.

@NoIDontWatchLoveIsland

Is it definitely a main or more of a tasting menu, concept? Where is the restaurant and is it Michelin starred/2/3 star?
I’d expect to see far more effort on the cooking side if it was a Michelin restaurant! It looks quite basic (unless there’s some incredible ingredients hiding - would love to see how it was described)!
Shedbuilder · 12/06/2021 23:05

I was charged £3.50 for a bread roll (just a bog-standard dry white burger bun, none of your fancy brioche buns) at a very ordinary pub the other day. That didn't include butter.

It makes the OP's sushi-grade raw salmon seem a bargain.

OrangeSharked · 12/06/2021 23:07

I bloody hope its sushi grade salmon its raw!

Its clearly sashimi. Hence why it has the nori on the top. I cant work out what the white is based on the photo but I'd be surprised if that was described as a salmon fillet.

What sort of restaurant is it? How was it described? Did it claim to come with any sides?

Most fish dishes for 18 I'd expect to have to order sides separately at a posh restaurant tbh

Cheeserton · 12/06/2021 23:08

Totally depends on what 'posh restaurant' really means and what the dish actually is. You really can't compare restaurant food solely on price. So many variables. Sounds like you didn't really figure out what yi were ordering too.

OrangeSharked · 12/06/2021 23:11

And yes its clearly just stoneware plates, present in many a restaurant

HelloBunny · 12/06/2021 23:13

Agree about the crap food at the moment. First time out for food last night...
Paid £££ for cold pizza. Salads that were just (wilted) rocket, tomato & cucumber.
Won’t be eating out again in a hurry. And I’ll be making my own delicious homemade pizza tomorrow.

HeronLanyon · 12/06/2021 23:13

I Can imagine that dish costing £18 if larger.
It is not a main course!
I would have said something to the waiter - checking this was not a starter.

KittytheHare · 12/06/2021 23:13

I'm disagreeing with most people here. I think there is actually decent amount of salmon on the plate, just not that much of anything else! It definitely looks like a Japanese influenced dish. We have to see the menu description before we can truly decide if yabu, but I'm guessing you are Wink

Acunningruse · 12/06/2021 23:15

Is this from the BH in H? I'm sure I recognise food style, tableware and setting!

motogogo · 12/06/2021 23:19

Most posh restaurants price the veg separately, this is just the protein element

Serpenta · 12/06/2021 23:20

£18 main isn't really a posh restaurant though.

motogogo · 12/06/2021 23:22

A that would be £60+ in truly upmarket places

Flowerwinter · 12/06/2021 23:23

It’s a hotel/champagne restaurant in Derbyshire. It was on the menu as a main course for £18. I understand it’s sushi grade etc but I’d expect at least a piece of bread with it or some salad?!
I did query if it was a starter and he said ‘it’s a main, as it’s on a big plate’.

Flowerwinter · 12/06/2021 23:23

There were no sides on the menu, no veg, potatoes or salad…

hm167 · 12/06/2021 23:23

hell no, doesn't even look good

GCAcademic · 12/06/2021 23:25

Did it taste nice at least?

Spaceash · 12/06/2021 23:25

I'd still be starving after that, although I think the plate is making it look worse than it is.

Zzelda · 12/06/2021 23:27

Put an honest review on Trip Advisor.

NiceGerbil · 12/06/2021 23:28

That's s ridiculously small amount of food for a main.

What were the sizes of the other mains like?

me4real · 12/06/2021 23:30

This is bad! Unless it tasted astounding and was somehow magickally satisfying, I suggest leaving them a bad review.

jackstini · 12/06/2021 23:30

What was the exact menu description?

It does look like quality salmon but understand you being disappointed if it was not what you were expecting

£18 is a very standard price for a main thought, not really posh

SeaShoreGalore · 12/06/2021 23:30

it’s a main, as it’s on a big plate

Ellmau · 12/06/2021 23:30

Exactly how was it described on the menu?

Serpenta · 12/06/2021 23:30

@Flowerwinter

There were no sides on the menu, no veg, potatoes or salad…
that seems silly
NannyAndJohn · 12/06/2021 23:32

Looking at the size of the plate and wine glass, if you put the six pieces of salmon together you'd probably get something resembling a full fillet.
