Would you pay £18 for this as a main in a posh restaurant?

Ordered what I thought was a salmon fillet from the mains, this is what arrived…it was £18. I’m gutted.

That's as much as I eat when I'm checking seasoning as I'm cooking. I'd be very disappointed, especially for £18!

inmyslippers · 12/06/2021 22:21

Looks like you're still hungry

GCAcademic · 12/06/2021 22:22

I’m waiting for the competitive under-eaters to arrive to tell us that would be enough for lunch and dinner.

SiobhanSharpe · 12/06/2021 22:22

The only way they could get away with prices like that was if it was wild salmon, fished from Royal Deeside by the late QM herself.

SwanShaped · 12/06/2021 22:22

Oh, mate. I’d be so disappointed. Was it tasty?

Changechangychange · 12/06/2021 22:23

It looks titchy, but actually when you compare it to the wine glass, the plate looks to be the size of a tea tray. So is it a normal sized piece of salmon on a deceptively big plate?

I’d expect some carbs somewhere though.

jumpbounce · 12/06/2021 22:23

Never mind the food (or lack of) can someone explain the plate to me!? It looks like a filthy oven dish?

redheadonatractor · 12/06/2021 22:23

Starter size definitely! Did it at least come with a side of new potatoes or greens (or a loaf of bread?!).

I'd probably cry if I got that for £18!

LateAtTate · 12/06/2021 22:24

How big were the other mains..?

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 12/06/2021 22:26

Is it definitely a main or more of a tasting menu, concept? Where is the restaurant and is it Michelin starred/2/3 star?

CeeceeBloomingdale · 12/06/2021 22:26

YANBU. That reminds me of the time I ordered a fish ravioli in Mallorca. The rest of the party ordered huge pizzas, I received 3 pieces of ravioli, no sauce.

bonfireheart · 12/06/2021 22:26

Oh I'd have to go to chip shop on the way home after this.

SquirrelFan · 12/06/2021 22:27

I don't think the plate is dirty - just has a rustic finish.
Are those scallops on the bits of salmon? Because they are quite pricey (although if they are they look like maybe 2 that have been chopped into smaller pieces).
That said, that dish would leave me feeling hollow... More room for dessert!

Serpenta · 12/06/2021 22:29

plate looks like hand thrown pottery and those are just marks from the kiln

Pedalpushers · 12/06/2021 22:30

I mean, it IS a salmon fillet, it's just been cut up?

I hate it when places don't make it clear if their dishes come with sides or not, but I usually assume that if their sides include 'potatoes' that the mains don't have anything with them.

Sometimes it is quite nice to have a meal that isn't huge portions. My local favourite upped their portion sizes recently and it spoiled the dinner to be so full.

Shoppingwithmother · 12/06/2021 22:30

The weird thing is that £18 for a main course is not enough for it to be a properly “posh” restaurant.
But it’s way too small to be £18 in a non- Michelin starred restaurant. It either needs to be more expensive (but be one of at least 10 courses) or be bigger.

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 12/06/2021 22:30

That is a lovely starter but you be fair £18 is not a lot for a main meal in a "posh" restaurant, are you supposed to add sides maybe?

Ostara212 · 12/06/2021 22:32

My dad was given a saucer of pasta as a main once. I mean literally the saucer under a teacup. He told them straight "this is not a main".

OP says main course, so I doubt it's a wanky tasting place.

A large salmon fillet would go well with what OP posted 😂
WhyMrsRobinson · 12/06/2021 22:34

Woh, it doesn’t even look very nicely presented. Like an amateur whose trying to be posh with no idea. That plate? Big and chunky and ethnic with little dainty bits of salmon? And drips of sauce..awful.send it back!

MumtoEri · 12/06/2021 22:34

A lot of 'posh' restaurants encourage sixes to be ordered separately as in one main dish then potatoes/salad/bread/veg i find. Obviously not the case if everyone else's mains were huge here!

Tohaveandtohold · 12/06/2021 22:35

That’s such a rip off

BackforGood · 12/06/2021 22:35

No, but I wouldn't book in to a restaurant that served such overpriced decorations.

I don't want to come home from a meal out, feeling hungry.

MaybeCrazy2 · 12/06/2021 22:35

That puts the fear of god in me because now I’m imagining the dessert being even smaller!!!!!!

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 12/06/2021 22:36

I'd be fucking furious and would have sent it back.

How big were the other mains in comparison?
