Ollie Robinson cancel culture what do you believe?

NEVERQUIT3331 · 08/06/2021 16:32

The latest news is about Ollie Robinson about a cricket player who when he was 18 years old was found tweeting sexist and racist things.

England dropped him and made him apologise. And there is no idea if he will ever return.

We can all agree that people need to be hold accountable for their actions. Some people definitely should be cancelled e.g. Katie Hopkins, Anjem Chowdhury as they will never change (or they aren't willing to.)

But if someone did something say 5 years ago or more and they do not hold these views anymore surely they deserve some sort of chance?

Definitely education is needed which can stop people having ignorant people (not everyone though but many people)

Plus with cancel culture there is a double standard if you say we should cancel then a lot of people should be cancelled e.g. Chris Brown, Camila Cabello (racist messages in the past etc..)

An MP saying of a woman hit the cunt where it hurts is appalling.

There's no two ways about that :/

NVision · 09/06/2021 15:30

I honestly think if this guy was not White British, this wouldn't even be a debate, their career would be ruined and that would be that...

So goes to say, let's treat him the same. Cancelled.

[quote DynamoKev]The Greens have had to withdraw from the Batley and Spen By election as their candidate had a twitter history too -

We could go after everyone and anyone with the sort of rulez we seem to be advocating

It would be lovely if every human was always constantly virtuous and non-offensive, but that isn't what humans are - we all have made mistakes, have bad thoughts, do bad things, get involved with weird shit

And if you are sitting there thinking you don't - you really don't know yourself very well!

Forgiveness seems to be a lost virtue

It is appalling

But for God's sake, one comment does not define someone every single time.

Are you really saying that you have never said anything awful along those lines?
You've probably said something like that in the last week!

Grow up, and realise we aren't all perfect specimens

NiceGerbil · 09/06/2021 17:10

He's an MP.

Grow up? Jesus.

NiceGerbil · 09/06/2021 17:11

And no I haven't said anything like that I don't think.

It's a very male thing to say.

Misogynist and with reference to violence.

FrippEnos · 09/06/2021 17:41

A white teenager in America passed her driving test and put on social media "I can drive, n**as",.

Someone waited two years and reported her to the college that she had a cheerleading scholarship to so that it would have the most

She lost her scholarship and any chance of going to any college.

Some of these cancellations seem just plain vindictive to me.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/06/2021 18:08

I wish all the people saying Ollie Robinson shouldn't play for England again, can't be rehabilitated etc would listen to interview given by the wonderful Michael Holding yesterday. I don't know how to link on here but it's definitely worth listening to.

Nutrafin · 09/06/2021 18:16

I wish all the people saying Ollie Robinson shouldn't play for England again

Is anyone actually saying that? (I assume there's probably a few on twitter, but it isnt a point of view I've heard until now).

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/06/2021 18:35

I've seen some on Twitter and Michael Carberry (ex England cricketer) has said the same @Nutrafin. Carberry went as far as saying Robinson should lose his career.

Never ever said “I’d kick him in the balls” ?

It’s just bullshit

And yes, grow up

Pedalpushers · 09/06/2021 18:52

It's not about saying one person can't learn and grow, it's about saying that his past means he cannot, in an anti-racist society, hold a position where he is held up as a role model, esteemed and admired because it sends the wrong message. Think of the people on the receiving end of racism and how it feels when people are so quick to excuse it and give people an opportunity to 'learn and grow' (an opportunity that they would likely not get in the same position). To me it smacks of the same attitude as the judges who are lenient to young rich men on the basis of them having such bright futures ahead of them. Part of building an anti racist society is about choosing who we hold as our visible role models and public shows of what is and is not acceptable and tolerated.

IamaBluebird · 09/06/2021 18:54

Michael Holding, an absolute joy to watch playing cricket and talks a lot of common sense.

Nutrafin · 09/06/2021 19:16

Re. Ian Byrne, the meme he retweeted re. 'hitting where is hurts' referred to Michelle Mone's wallet (i.e it was calling for people to boycott her company). That's how you normally see the phrase used, it isnt a reference to violence.

But yes, an MP should do better than retweet a post containing a misogynist slur.

SlipperyDippery · 09/06/2021 19:30

If he needs sacking then Boris Johnson has said worse and he's the pm fgs

I agree.

The tweets were offensive and it’s right he should apologise and demonstrate that he has learned in the past 10 years. I think PP’s suggestion of an anti-racist course or something might be useful.

In 2021 we all know that laughing at racist things isn’t funny. 10 years ago, it was fairly mainstream to do so though. Come Fly With Me was on TV in 2010, little Britain not many years earlier and they were very popular. Both were horrifically racist, worse than anything Ollie Robinson said (that I’ve seen) and yet Matt Lucas and David Williams are still out there.

I suppose I’m saying while the tweets were racist and offensive, I can see how they did fit with the humour at the time. Doesn’t make it ok but I think it’s important context. Society has come some way since then and maybe he has toox

So no one can ever be rehabilitated for want of a better description? What if OR used this to say 'I did something very wrong but I've turned things around and changed. Don't be an idiot like me' (I get the impression he had a lot of issues when he was younger).

I could listen to him all day. He's taken over as my favourite commentator since Sky sacked David Gower.

The university is being sued

An0n0n0n · 09/06/2021 20:56

Generally if you change and mean it you have taken positive action to undo harm.

If he cared enough to tweet racist stuff and decided later it was wrong he should have been proactively doing something to help counter it like volunteering or raising awareness.

You cant just get caught and say youve changed your views.

The irony being that today he'd be really banned for deliberately dangerous play, ie, bowling in a way that can kill people.
starfro · 09/06/2021 21:13

It's all about attacking other people and creating division, spurred on by social media. It's like a horrible computer game where the ultimate goal is to ruin someone else's life. Bonus points if they lose their job, are attacked in the street or commit suicide.

All it does is distract from actual racism and tolerance.

His tweets were the immature and offensive jokes that many 18yr old boys make. He should apologise and show that he's not like that any more.

Jon Ronson did a book on this a few years ago: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0196HJ6OS/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21
