Ollie Robinson cancel culture what do you believe?

NEVERQUIT3331 · 08/06/2021 16:32

The latest news is about Ollie Robinson about a cricket player who when he was 18 years old was found tweeting sexist and racist things.

England dropped him and made him apologise. And there is no idea if he will ever return.

We can all agree that people need to be hold accountable for their actions. Some people definitely should be cancelled e.g. Katie Hopkins, Anjem Chowdhury as they will never change (or they aren't willing to.)

But if someone did something say 5 years ago or more and they do not hold these views anymore surely they deserve some sort of chance?

Definitely education is needed which can stop people having ignorant people (not everyone though but many people)

Plus with cancel culture there is a double standard if you say we should cancel then a lot of people should be cancelled e.g. Chris Brown, Camila Cabello (racist messages in the past etc..)
@JustAnotherPoster00 plenty of people have been sacked from Tesco, Asda etc for having made racist remarks to customers. It happens all the time. And there has been many instances of people losing their jobs because of racist tweets or posts on Facebook which have been reported to their boss. There are even law firms that specialise in those cases. Keep up.
Excellent news as far as I'm concerned

QwertyGirly · 09/06/2021 09:33

There are law firms specialising in defending drink drivers. It doesn't make drink driving right. Or do you think this is excellent news as well.

Do I think drunk drivers deserve legal representation? Yes I do
mustlovegin · 09/06/2021 09:37

But you can see this is a different scenario, surely. They did it while they were at their job. Not ten years ago in a totally unrelated context and being sacked for it.

I'm talking about the legal aspect here solely (not whether it's morally right or wrong to do this)

toastofthetown · 09/06/2021 09:38

Ten years ago isn’t that long ago really. There have been some cultural shifts in the last ten years, but nobody with a significant international profile would have posted those tweets ten years ago either. They were unacceptable then. It wasn’t the 70’s.

The tweets do however fit into a kind of ‘edgy humour’ that was popular at the time amongst young people. I saw quite a bit of it at university. Quite rightly it’s not popular any more. Maybe Ollie Robinson is still horribly racist and is just apologising to save his place on the team, or maybe he posted some horrible tweets that aren’t indicative of what he thought at the time (or now) and promptly forgot he did it.

It’s not cancel culture to be investigated though. Most of us would be suspended if racist tweets were unveiled. The ECB can hardly say “well it was a long time ago, and I’m sure he’s changed”.

TheGoogleMum · 09/06/2021 09:40

I think people should be allowed to make mistakes in the past if they have learnt and are remorseful. I'm definitely not proud of everything I said and did at 18.

edwinbear · 09/06/2021 09:40

My 11yr old DS knows racism/sexism is not OK under any circumstances and certainly knows better than to post racist/sexist views on social media. An 18yr old should absolutely be held accountable for abhorrent opinions he's expressed in public.

Brainwave89 · 09/06/2021 09:48

As an Indian I have read through the tweets that this man made. I have to say they were quite poor, and at 19 (i.e. and adult), I would have expected better. It is not enough to simply skip over this and say something like he was young and stupid, it was a long time okay and he is much changed now, because I would take some persuading on any of those points would stand up to scrutiny. In my view he should serve a ban of several matches and go on a racism education course before he is available for re-selection.

Bloodybridget · 09/06/2021 10:13

@TomPinch that's a happy thought - wish I could live long enough to see it! But I do think any other kind of hate crime abuse is usually now pounced on at the time.

The Greens have had to withdraw from the Batley and Spen By election as their candidate had a twitter history too -

Will be interesting to see if anybody will be so quick to defend this person.

Yes and Ian Byrne tweeted about businesswoman Michelle Mone, telling his followers to “hit the cu*t where it hurts”.
He is still an MP. Why hasn’t he been cancelled?

Ireallydontknowimtired · 09/06/2021 11:44

It's all well and good to not like cancel culture until some TRAs, MRAs, conspiracy theorists and others we don't like get banned or cancelled and suddenly we either have nothing to say or all chant "Good!".

CutieBear · 09/06/2021 11:55

Ant McPartlin put people in danger with his drink driving. Caitlin Jenner killed someone due to dangerous driving. Neither were cancelled and still earn a ridiculous amount of money.

And yet historic tweets as teenagers can ruin someone’s career.

Ollie Robinson’s career isn’t ruined. At the moment is is suspended pending an investigation.

And as far as I know Caitlin Jenner and Ant McPartlin aren’t employed by the ECB.

mustlovegin · 09/06/2021 13:56

Drink driving is a criminal offense. Expressing an opinion isn't

LakieLady · 09/06/2021 14:06

Anything that might make others think twice about posting sexist and racist shite is fine by me.

Bloody shame though. England badly need a decent bowler atm.

NiceGerbil · 09/06/2021 14:09

Hit the cunt where it hurts?

An MP?

Christ.

Binglebong · 09/06/2021 14:10

@Andante57

Binglebong

I would hope the investigation examines how he has behaved since, if he still holds those views

How will this investigation be carried out? Every text, email and recorded message of the last 10 years examined?

Difficult I know but you can look at his behaviour. Although cricket has a very all white image there are usually a number of Asian players as wellvasoversees and kolpaks. Talk to them, see if he said or did anything that seemed off.

He was referring to beating her in an election though, not literally hitting her. Or was it use of the word "cunt" to describe her that you find offensive?
NiceGerbil · 09/06/2021 14:13

I've heard worse than the bloke tweeted by so called comedians on the telly.

Way way worse is being said and done in real life all the time and written of course.

If he needs sacking then Boris Johnson has said worse and he's the pm fgs

Binglebong · 09/06/2021 14:21

I get the impression that a lot of people don't know what the tweets were. I have seen two, they certainly don't reflect ones made here so there may be more. No n*** word for starters. But what was said matters - there is a scale as to how bad things are.

The two I saw weren't nice and weren't funny but they WERE reflective of the edgy humour around that time. Including #racist to make it "edgier"

I feel people should look up what the tweets were before they condemn or pardon anyone I'm now off to see if I can find more.

Binglebong · 09/06/2021 14:25

Ok, some more have come up and leave disgusting taste. But i still feel they were reflecting of the Frankie Boyle humour so popular just then.

NiceGerbil · 09/06/2021 14:26

I saw 4 which were not funny but just imo not as awful as eg stuff Boris has said or some people on telly.

No words that need *.

have a seen the wrong tweets?

The misgynistic ones are imo and as a crazed feminist things that wouldn't even tweak my misogyny radar.

Andante57 · 09/06/2021 15:01

LakieLady
I don’t care what he meant. Saying ‘hit the cunt where it hurts’ is offensive.
If a Tory MP had said that you would be objecting furiously.
