To ask if your seatbelt slides up and rubs against your neck

I have huge breasts. Not sure if this is why it happens but whether I am driving or a passenger the seatbelt always slides up and rubs against my.neck..i am constantly pulling it away from my neck which I'm sure isn't safe.
Does anyone else have this problem?

I'm sure they know the issues with cars and women has been in the news loads

@noodlezoodle

Yes and I'm tall as well as being big of nork, so it isn't height related. It's because everything is designed for a 'default human' which in most cases is men.

PP mentioned the book "Invisible Women" by Caroline Criado Perez which is all about this topic. It's an excellent book but I'm having to read it in very small chunks because I get the absolute rage every couple of pages.

Me too, very excellent book but so much rage.

Don't notice it when I'm driving, but as a passenger it really annoys me that the seatbelt either rubs on my neck, or when I adjust the pillar thing downwards, it gradually gets tighter and tighter and exerts a heavy pressure on my collar bone.

The only two things I found that help are the seatbelt gadget thing they sell for pregnant women, and Ikea bag clips.

Rummikub · 07/06/2021 20:04

How do the IKEA clips work?

Twitchynose · 07/06/2021 20:33

I use one of these - although I think I got mine from Halfords years ago, I position it so it gives about 2cm slack, just enough to stop it rubbing on my neck and flaring my neck pain. You need to make sure there isn’t too much slack as it will make the seatbelt ineffective though. You can also use a peg with a spring in it to do the same thing… www.amazon.co.uk/Newseego-Adjuster-Seatbelt-Comfortable-Experience/dp/B07F2V9WW2/ref=psdc_2484493031_t1_B08MTGV9RV?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Yes, they're designed for men or women with small tits. I have found in my current car it is a lot better, there is just so much more adjustment in the seatbelts, seats and steering wheel, compared to my old car, which was a sporty Mercedes, much easier to get DC in this car too!

Faranth · 07/06/2021 20:55

Yes. Constantly. I'm 5ft6 so not short particularly. Larger than average boobs but not massive. The belt slides over my bust so it's on the outside of the boob opposite the shoulder attachment point, instead of across the middle of my chest.

The shoulder strap is adjustable but doesn't go low enough. I've also NEVER had a belt go over my hips, it's always over my stomach. I've been from a size 8 to a 16 and it's made no difference.

I sat in my friend's car once and the belt didn't rub at all, because some utter fucking genius, who deserves a Nobel prize, had designed it so the belt comes out of the shoulder of the seat!!

I worry that those belt adjusters mean that in an accident they would break, and there would suddenly be slack in the belt, and it would be worse than a non slack belt in the wrong place.

FangsForTheMemory · 07/06/2021 20:56

Yup. I'm rarely in a car as I can't drive, but it's really annoying on long journeys. I hook a hand through it. Large norks.

EsmeNoteSpelling · 07/06/2021 21:25

Yep, same! I’ve wrapped a bit of fabric from an old t-shirt round the seatbelt where it rubs, and tied it on the ‘front’ side of the seatbelt

danadas · 07/06/2021 21:37

Yes so glad I saw this thread. Going to have a look at the links as I'm always worried I am going to be garrotted if we have an accident!

I had this problem, but not any more! I bought a couple of seat belt pads from eBay last year after we were involved in a shunt. 8yr old DS was in his booster seat on the back seat and the seat belt scraped his neck when we were hit. The pads are great, they wrap around the belt and attach with Velcro so can be put at any height, think they were about a fiver each. Although I bought them for DS I now use one when I’m a passenger and it has solved the problem of chaffed seat belt neck!

Seatbelt cover works for me to stop the rubbing and the rash.
