To ask if your seatbelt slides up and rubs against your neck

I have huge breasts. Not sure if this is why it happens but whether I am driving or a passenger the seatbelt always slides up and rubs against my.neck..i am constantly pulling it away from my neck which I'm sure isn't safe.
Does anyone else have this problem?

Yes-I bought a special clip that took the seat belt pressure off my neck but I live in the US unsure if is available in the UK

insertrandomusernamehere · 07/06/2021 01:14

Gosh, I thought it was just me this happened to and the fault of my badly designed body. I have a seatbelt adjuster thing that rests on my stomach and moves the belt away from my neck. I'm petite with huge breasts so sometimes the belt will slip back and chafe but it's nowhere near as bad as it used to be.

1423210 Car Seat Belt Adjusters www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005BP37F4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_RAZ2EKYVS0QB5DP84AA5?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

I've had these for years and they work. No need to detach them from the seatbelt each time, you just hook the seatbelt over it.

Willowkins · 07/06/2021 01:28

I always thought it was because I was short - I have adjusted it to the lowest setting because otherwise it would be rubbing against my ear. I fix it by wearing something with a collar or hood so that it doesn't touch my skin.

EBearhug · 07/06/2021 01:35

I too have mine on the lowest setting and it still rubs. Nothing to do with breaststroke size - I'm an A-cup. I use the Halfords padded seat belt covers, but I still swear at crap male-centric car design most days I drive.

EBearhug · 07/06/2021 01:37

Obviously I have been talking about swimming a lot lately... breasts, not breaststroke.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 07/06/2021 01:43

@Biffbaff

Yes I often wonder how many women are needlessly decapitated in car accidents because of this.
Yes me too. I spend the whole time yanking it down to try and get it away from my neck. It’s so uncomfortable.

My old car had an adjuster but this one doesn’t. Feels like it could do more harm than good in an accident.

MeanderingGently · 07/06/2021 02:18

I have this problem but it's because I'm short and the seat belt is fitted too high up and so doesn't fit across my shoulder.
I didn't know it could be adjusted, I will have a look at my car tomorrow but I suspect there isn't any adjustment on my vehicle (cheap basic model!)

FlamingVictoria · 07/06/2021 02:25

Yup. So frustrating.

notawittyname1954 · 07/06/2021 02:25

Am sure it is to do with the boobage. I end up with red marks so annoying.

NiceGerbil · 07/06/2021 02:35

The bigger problem is the safety thing (which is linked).

Scroll down to cars! It's long

noodlezoodle · 07/06/2021 02:40

Yes and I'm tall as well as being big of nork, so it isn't height related. It's because everything is designed for a 'default human' which in most cases is men.

PP mentioned the book "Invisible Women" by Caroline Criado Perez which is all about this topic. It's an excellent book but I'm having to read it in very small chunks because I get the absolute rage every couple of pages.

RedPillowcase · 07/06/2021 02:48

I have something like this. but mine’s a penguin as back when I got it there seemed to be only kids designs! Grin

Chunkymenrock · 07/06/2021 03:18

Me too and it's just awful. The slide adjuster in the car does not go low enough. I have a padded seat belt cover which helps a little but it's all still at my neck and feels so dangerous. Those amazon clips people have linked to above, where do they go and how do they work? It's really not clear from the amazon description and no pictures.

mariemare · 07/06/2021 05:11

Yes. I've had this problem since puberty.

It really is a man's world, isn't it?

Spermysextowel · 07/06/2021 05:31

I got pulled over by the police once. They were checking for drivers using mobiles, & thought that I’d had mine to my right ear, & that I’d quickly dumped it into the door pocket when I’d seen them. I had to show them that my phone was at the bottom of my bag in the passenger footwell, & demonstrate the seat-belt-away-from-neck-tug, which is what my right hand had actually been doing.

RhusTox · 07/06/2021 05:42

Yes. I am 5' 6" and small chested. I have skin tags from the seatbelt rubbing against my neck all the time. I shove a scarf in there when I have one on me but sometimes I've had to travel with it under my arm, which I know is bad but in the summer when I'm wearing lighter clothing it gets painful.

No adjuster in my car.

I know this is because cars are designed for men, as the article linked to earlier in the thread shows, and the book written on the subject too.

Someone should tweet this thread to the car manufacturers and the road safety people.

NumberTheory · 07/06/2021 06:02

@LibertyGables

These are worse for me. They stop it from scratching but they make it even bulkier/more noticeable and when they're new the fur even gets in my mouth Envy (not envy).
feesh · 07/06/2021 06:35

Yes! This is me. I’m 5’8” so not exactly short, and I have an adjustable belt. I could never figure out why it happens, but I guess it must be my boobs. And they’re not big boobs either; sadly!

Onlinedilema · 07/06/2021 06:42

Yes I have this problem. I think it's because seatbelts are see if we to fit men.

Onlinedilema · 07/06/2021 06:43

Flaming auto correct. Designed to fit men.

FTEngineerM · 07/06/2021 06:44

Made for men.

Read invisible women.

3Britnee · 07/06/2021 06:46

I have to move the slider to the lowest bit.

Best car I had was a Nissan micra sport convertible, that was made to women's proportions and even had a little flip out hook on the console for your handbag 😂

LadyPenelope68 · 07/06/2021 06:46

@Sparkesy
It's worse in a Volvo I've noticed
Absolutely agree, it’s much worse when I’m in my car than DH’s or DS’s.
