To ask if your seatbelt slides up and rubs against your neck

I have huge breasts. Not sure if this is why it happens but whether I am driving or a passenger the seatbelt always slides up and rubs against my.neck..i am constantly pulling it away from my neck which I'm sure isn't safe.
Does anyone else have this problem?

I have had the same problem all my adult life, I have one of these on my seatbelt now and the difference it makes is immense. So much more comfortable. I will never drive a car without one now.
GeorgiaGirl52 · 07/06/2021 07:09

@Sportsnight

Yes! It’s too high even in the lowest setting.
This is me.^ Really think it is dangerous, as in a collision it would likely fracture my windpipe.
CoronaCurls · 07/06/2021 07:14

Thank you for this thread! This is a big problem for me, especially as a passenger. I've just ordered www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07FH73D6X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_ENC6P7NFRG1EEQB65FJZ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 and can't wait to try it.

I did amuse/frustrate me though that the picture on amazon is of course a man, who generally won't need one because the car has been designed for him!

Etulosba · 07/06/2021 08:00

It's worse in a Volvo I've noticed

Which is odd as Volvo specifically do design with women in mind.

misscockerspaniel · 07/06/2021 08:01

Back in April, one of the guest judges on the Great British Menu was a female scientist who said that car seat belts had been designed for a man's body shape and that, as a result, in an accident, a woman was 47% more likely to be injured and 17% more likely to be killed.

Dilbertian · 07/06/2021 08:23

The clips that attach the diagonal part of the seatbelt to the lap part bring the diagonal strap more comfortably between the breasts, but they are potentially dangerous. They can also lift the lap strap onto your stomach. The lap strap should be on your hips, so that it presses against your bones rather than your soft guts taking the force of a crash. The only time the lap belt consistently sits in the correct position on me is when I am heavily pregnant and it tucks under my belly, which holds it in the correct place.

It might be possible to use one together with one of the pregnancy seatbelt adjusters that hold the lapbelt down.

But why is that necessary? Why aren't cars manufactured with the adjustments needed by half of the population already built in?

MeadowLines · 07/06/2021 08:27

I have this too, its very frustrating

shivawn · 07/06/2021 08:39

Wow common problem apparently, this has never happened to me and I regularly get taxis, travel with friends etc so am in a variety of cars. I'm 5'6 and my breasts are 32DD so not huge but they're pretty big for my body.

MrsDThomas · 07/06/2021 08:40

Irritates the life out of me. And i have a skin tag where it rubs and bug boobs.

MrsDThomas · 07/06/2021 08:41

BIG not bug🤦🏽‍♀️

RandomLemonVerbena · 07/06/2021 08:43

I hate this too and it has been a feature of every car I have owned. have sent for one of the clips PP have linked to, thank you!

Rummikub · 07/06/2021 10:56

Looked at my seatbelt this morning. Where it joins the pillar - why can’t it be longer so there’s more adjustment?
Anyone on Twitter - ask Ford etc to join this thread!

deydododatdodontdeydo · 07/06/2021 11:17

Yep. Really irritates me. I’m 5’9 as well so it’s not only a short person thing

You are above the average male height too.
I'm 5' 8" with small breasts. Never had this problem, thankfully.
I must have a man's body shape!

Yes. I have large breasts and am 5'4 - everything is designed for men.

Willowkins · 07/06/2021 11:45

Oops wrong thread Blush

PattyPan · 07/06/2021 11:56

It doesn’t happen in the car we have now but I have previously had a seatbelt cover and they do help to soften the edge and stop it hurting your throat so much.

HannaHat · 07/06/2021 12:44

Yes it happens to me, and I’m small boobed.
I have a seatbelt cover in my car to lessen it somewhat.

Satstar · 07/06/2021 13:05

Thanks everyone..have just ordered the seatbelt adjusters and hope this will make a difference Smile

I am 5'10" and still get this, but only in dh's car which is a BMW. My car (Renault) is fine whether I'm driving or passenger. They both have adjustable seat belts but it's definitely not height related.
Also totally agree with the Invisible Women comment earlier, I can only read small chunks at once (same problem with Women and Power by Mary Beard). Caroline Criado Perez also has a weekly blog/mailing list about the same subject, I'd recommend subscribing.

AlexCabot · 07/06/2021 13:15

Yep. I'm short and an A cup but it happens to me. It's worse in my Hyundai than it was when I had a Fiesta.

the80sweregreat · 07/06/2021 13:15

Yes, I am forever adjusting seat belts. Or struggling to get them to do up!

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 07/06/2021 13:49

Seat belt pad. My driving instructor told me to always wear one as it helps stop the belt from riding up across my neck. He said a lot of women need them as larger breasts mean seatbelts often end up across your neck and that it would be dangerous in an accident.

nocoolnamesleft · 07/06/2021 13:51

Yep. Yet another way in which the world is designed around men.

the80sweregreat · 07/06/2021 13:55

Dh worked for a huge motor company in the uk and many of his engineering bosses were all women ( much higher up the ladder than he ever was!)
Maybe we should be emailing these companies to ask them to consider women when designing a car ? They just might not be aware of the problems?
