Inspired by my other thread....

Yes. Buddhists teachings suggest we have had countless past lives, we’ve been everything from insect to queen, murderers and priests. I think the teachings on the law of karma explain so much. Like why we instantly feel good or bad about people we have just met. How bad things happen to good people. How babies arrive with characteristics they have brought from before.

Past lives are no less logical to me than the idea of one single life. The cause of every moment is the moment before. The trouble for many in believing in past lives is the belief that the mind is produced by the brain. In fact neuroscience has not proven this - it’s known as the hard problem. Clearly there is an extremely close correlation between mind and body/ brain - but that’s not the same as it coming from the brain. There’s no evidence of how the brain magically produces thoughts. It’s because it doesn’t. The mind is a formless continuum that flies from life to life like a bird leaving a nest. That’s what I believe anyway!

Fascinating post

I believe our souls , energy what ever you want to call it do go on .

Morgan Freeman presents a fascinating series ' The Story of God'
Religious and spiritual he travels around the world looking at different religions and their meanings . One series he meets people and listens to their stories of what they believe could be a possible transition to afterlife ....
I stumbled across it , I teach RE so was relevant and have used some series in my teaching.

blissfulllife · 06/06/2021 21:47

Never believed it until my fourth child (aged 4) pointed out an old building on our way out somewhere and told us it upset her because it was where everyone waited once they were no more. Spooked us a bit so we researched the building. Apparently during the cholera outbreak in that area there were so many deaths that the bodies were stored there until they could be buried.

donerwillbehere · 06/06/2021 21:48

It is the million dollar question

Do out souls go on ???

I hope so .... I differently want to see my loved ones that have passed .

JuliasTheme · 06/06/2021 22:01

Guessing I was a street urchin because my life is marvellous now 🤣🤣

PielFerry · 06/06/2021 22:22

My daughter, aged between 1 and 6 years old, used to talk about her other mummy and her other family. We always accepted this and we even drove past her old home. Her mummy had died and so she came to us (in her own words). It was a very strange time but she was insistent even when very young. She’s forgotten about it now.

Fleetw00d · 06/06/2021 22:24

100% yes I believe we do have past lives. I also think we can tell if someone is an old soul and has been here before, or a new soul who is on their first round. I believe that newer souls are usually the ones who don't believe in past lives as they haven't experienced it, but older souls have something within them that reminds them that they have been here before. I also think that this links to soul mates and that souls are linked, sometimes you find your soul mate if you're lucky but sometimes you go through life being in love, but not with a soul mate as they may not be in that life. Just my thoughts and it brings me comfort to think this is true 😀

UrAWizHarry · 06/06/2021 22:29

No, I'm not a gullible idiot.

TaraR2020 · 06/06/2021 22:33

@Raindropumbrella

I neither believe nor disbelieve. I find the idea fascinating though and like to keep an open mind
This is pretty close to how I feel...If you really pushed me for a definitive answer I'd say no. But I really want to believe it!
Fleetw00d · 06/06/2021 23:00

@UrAWizHarry no need to be rude to/about people who do believe and take comfort from it. A simple no would suffice.

Tana433 · 06/06/2021 23:03

@PatriciaBateman You have given me a headache now! I had to read your posts several times to take it in and im still not sure i understand it! Im totally open-minded about this though, it completely fascinates me. Im going to read the story now.

Gilmoregale · 06/06/2021 23:04

@Duchess379 You stole my line ;)

Sparrowsong · 06/06/2021 23:04

Yes. The Buddhist version anyhow. I think i know of at least one of them.

HelpMeh · 06/06/2021 23:05

No. But I'm a miserable cow and can't quite fathom why we're here in the first place. What's the point of this life let alone any prior ones - we don't seem to be improving...?

Panaesthesia · 06/06/2021 23:05

No.

The only 'study' done on the matter was performed by a man who faked all his accounts and bullshitted a lot. End of.

Duchess379 · 06/06/2021 23:09

@gilemoregale. It's true, I'm going to get a tattoo saying "I'm not going back"! I'm having a shitty life & I don't want to come back & do it again! 🤦🏼‍♀️

AgeLikeWine · 06/06/2021 23:19

No, because there is zero scientific evidence of any possible mechanism for this to happen. Everything we know indicates that humans like all other vertebrates are born, we live our lives, we die and that’s it.

I’m completely open minded so if & when such evidence emerges I will change my view. I’m not holding my breath, though...

TinkleTongs · 06/06/2021 23:27

No
Nobody lives multiple life’s
Honestly such a lot of crap.

baroqueandblue · 06/06/2021 23:29

I think people who refuse to entertain the possibility are the deluded ones. Quite misguided, actually. The whole fact of existence and consciousness in any form is still pretty much beyond human explanation, and even without my own subjective experiences of other 'dimensions' I would have to concede the probability that we live 'other lives'. The mathematics inherent in the structure of the universe establishes that probability. But many 'rationalists' miss that point.

Apart from anything else, when we make even the smallest choice between two or more alternative actions, we leave behind the universe that consists of the opposite action. According to quantum physics, that universe goes on existing somewhere beyond our conscious awareness (and not just as a theory) 😲

Pyewackect · 06/06/2021 23:31

If there is I'm coming back as a man.

No we don’t If I choose to go somewhere with someone it doesn’t leave a whole other universe Hmm

Have you been watching masters of the universe or something?

It just means life moves on and that’s the way it’s meant to be

LoveNote · 06/06/2021 23:35

no...we are born, live and die....like all other creatures on this planet

why would humans be marked out as special?

considering that a foundation of Buddhist teachings is 'no-self' or 'no soul', it's never really been satisfactorily resolved what it would be that continues post death.

Personally, I take the idea of continuation to just mean all our atoms break down and become part of the earth, to continue to be recombined.

But different schools/traditions have different interpretations:
