To wait until Monday for a lump in my armpit?

cultkid · 05/06/2021 19:07

Two days ago I got what I think is an ingrown hair in my arm pit? It isn't red and wasn't red but it felt like I had a pimple coming up. I had a few ingrown hairs in my arm pits as a teen and it feels like that (sort of)
Anyway I haven't been able to lift my arm up it it hurts so much. Yesterday it felt even worse and today even worse. I just asked my husband to have a look again and now there is a lump bigger then a grape, more the size of a date? Sticking out under my arm. It is very very very painful. I do not have a fever.

Can I leave it until Monday? I don't want it to turn into a massive painful cyst. I also don't want it to become very infected and sore. I don't have a fever. Have had some weird issues with not having a temperature and having massive infections/ having a high temp and no infection so I don't know how reliable this is to guess if the arm pit situation is serious,

Is it best to wait until Monday?

Call 111 again now. You aren’t getting any benefit from the antibiotics so they will either need to give you something for the sickness or alternative antibiotics.

itsme1978 · 07/06/2021 18:51

A&e nurse here......go in to your local one x

QuestionableMouse · 07/06/2021 18:53

Don't bother with 111 again, just pack a bag and head to A&E.

thatmakesmehappy · 07/06/2021 19:03

@QuestionableMouse

Don't bother with 111 again, just pack a bag and head to A&E.
Agree! Go to A and E. If you're now getting sick, you've no idea if it's the antibiotics or the infection that's doing it.
Wolfiefan · 07/06/2021 19:52

Good luck OP.

Onceuponatime1818 · 07/06/2021 19:59

Defo go to a&e ASAP.

Good luck

something2say · 07/06/2021 20:05

Oh no! I do hope you're in safe hands xxx

StupidBlanket · 07/06/2021 20:35

Get yourself to A and E.

I had an abscess in my armpit, literally turned up overnight. Was prescribed antibiotics but it just got worse the next day. I went to the hospital when I physically couldn't dress myself I was in that much pain. I was admitted for surgery the same day!

Better to be safe than sorry.

something2say · 08/06/2021 07:32

@cultkid how are you getting on? I'm worrying about you xxx

cultkid · 08/06/2021 19:44

So sorry for the delay I have been feeling really sick today

So I went to the hospital first thing this morning and the doctor immediately said it is too big and deep to cut out or drain in their clinic office with LA and that it would need surgery 😭😭 if it doesn't go or if it gets bigger then it need surgery urgently 😭😭

IVe been given co amoxiclav and told to stop the fluoxicillin. I've also been given ondesetron so I can try to eat.

Feeling tearful and overwhelmed
The pharmacist told me that he doesn't think the anti biotics will be able to clear it and I may be better off going to have it removed urgently; privately.

I don't know where to turn next.

HollowTalk · 08/06/2021 19:48

That sounds so painful. Surely you won't have to pay privately if the medication doesn't help?

itsme1978 · 08/06/2021 19:55

Are you in the uk op?

Lumene · 08/06/2021 20:12

Oh no I’m so sorry OP, what a pain.

Did the dr give any indication of when they would refer for surgery - eg a timescale, or ‘come back if x gets worse or y happens’... ?

cultkid · 09/06/2021 09:48

I'm in England yes xxx

OP posts:
cultkid · 09/06/2021 09:48

I've woken up with the other arm pit hurting and it's also got a small lump in where the lymph node is

I am panicking

OP posts:
Lumene · 09/06/2021 10:02

Sorry to hear that OP.

Could you go back to the pharmacist and ask advice about what this might mean and whether you could get seen?

Or 111 again?

Crappyfridays7 · 09/06/2021 10:07

Just go back to a&e op
The pharmacist can’t say what will happen he hasn’t seen it I don’t understand why hed say they won’t work. Get another dr to check it.
Take the antibiotics and painkillers & anti sickness. Why would you go private? If it needs lanced they will Lance it, they may admit for IV antibiotics also, sometimes they will see if it shrinks then Lance under LA if it has local stings and was the worst bit for me when I had one. If you can take ibuprofen that’ll help with pain and inflammation caused by the abscess, but go back today

cultkid · 09/06/2021 10:46

The lump is growing do fast it started off sore in the left arm pit this am

Then lentil sized by school run
Now blue berry

I have been on hold for god damn hours to GP

I was sent round to the GP for a check at hospital yesterday who said about it being too deep

If I go back to A&E I don't know what to do

I have my son with me xx

OP posts:
QuestionableMouse · 09/06/2021 11:07

Just head back to A&E. They'll help you. Grab snacks and drinks for both of you but go back.

QuestionableMouse · 09/06/2021 11:10

And honestly, the surgery isn't too terrible - it'll be a day case with lighter GA and you should be able to come home the same or next day. No need to go private!

You really need it done because you're risking sepsis or a really ugly wound if it bursts.

Your GP can't do anything. You need the hospital I'm afraid.

cultkid · 09/06/2021 11:38

I'm so frustrated

So should I go back? With my son?

OP posts:
Lumene · 09/06/2021 11:46

I would go to A and E if it was me, given how fast the lump is growing now.

Alternatively you could call 111 and see what they advise?

Jetwashingsquirrels · 09/06/2021 12:04

Oh you poor thing OP, that sounds really sore. Definitely sounds like A&E time to me. Maybe pack up a bag of snacks and activities for your son? Not ideal but I really think you need to get looked at. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Sakura7 · 09/06/2021 12:52

Yes you need to go to A&E I'm afraid. The GP won't be able to do anything.

Can your husband take your son? If he's at work he can leave, this is important enough. If you have to, bring your son with you.

scaredsadandstuck · 09/06/2021 12:53

Oh you poor thing. Yes go back to A&E - no idea why the pharmacist suggested going private. If it requires emergency surgery the NHS will do it. As PP have said it's probably a day case, maybe overnight.

I'm working on a project with an NHS client at the moment and a situation just like yours was used as an example of day case emergency surgery - i.e. abscess that needs draining.

Do you have a friend you can call on to take your son. I would be glad to help out a friend in a situation like this. Is your partner/son's dad around? Can he help?
