Ever suspect a MN post has been about you?

Have you ever read a post on MN and wondered if the OP was talking about you (or someone close to you), like.., actually you? If so, did you say anything to them? Or.. do you suspect someone might have written a post about you in the recent or deep past, but you can't find it (can't be arsed to search years back)?

OP posts:

@Sillawithans
wow! poor you, but well done for turning your life around!

you know the "I'm the wife" bit reminds of the thread about the physicist Brian Cox. some posters were oohing & aahing about him, there were a few saucy comments. then his wife turned up because a friend of hers brought it to her attention 🤣🤣
I'm pretty sure it's in Classics ( if not in AIBU)

so glad to hear you got your happy ending.

BonnieDundee · 06/06/2021 00:45

I've never recognised myself on here but I lead a fairly boring uninteresting life

There was one about a ski chalet and.a group of friends who had been invited against the owners better judgement and following some pressure from family. They went on to totally take the piss and there was lipstick smeared on expensive white sheets I think. That was very outing as well as entertaining. And kept being revived

HollowTalk · 06/06/2021 01:01

Does anyone remember the thread where the poster was getting a lot of sympathy and then her husband came on and the story changed completely?

when was this? I think I remember something but I'm hardly on here since MN went bonkers after the SWAT prank
FrankensteinIsTheMonster · 06/06/2021 04:35

No, but I've read a blog post before now, scrolled down to comment, discovered somebody had already commented saying exactly what I wanted to say, then realised that commenter was me from the past.

If it's the one I recall, he suspected her of an affair and she hadn't mentioned that he had suffered a career-ending injury.
AllIknow · 06/06/2021 08:06

Yes my ex started a thread on here about me and it was causing a lot of debate. I joined in and it was eventually deleted!

WeIcomeToGilead · 06/06/2021 08:08

@Millano

I let it go but will never forgive her and she doesn’t realise I know.

I came across one of her posts a couple of years later banging on about how she was too sophisticated now for her boyfriend 🙄 and wanted to leave him. How she was now into fine dining and he still wanted to get off
His face on E.

Truth is: she was the OW and was simply sick of him not getting divorced after 8 years

Good lesson in perspective: posters will always tweak the truth deliberately or sunconsciously.

MaBroon21 · 06/06/2021 08:21

I was recognized very recently and I still don’t understand why two people were needing recognition on a thread that they had to declare they knew.

It was ugly and rather pathetic.

OVienna · 06/06/2021 09:17

I know one was. Years ago a friend told me her user name. She probably forgot she posted it (and yes I snooped, lol) but she moaned that I'd offered her child some ice cream. I remembered the event because it was the first time I'd been out of the house after having surgery for an ectopic pregnancy. Which I guess she'd forgotten. Not entirely with it at the time, I wasn't.

OVienna · 06/06/2021 09:18

It was a passing remark, she didn't start a whole thread about it.

OVienna · 06/06/2021 09:20

Sorry: the child has been diagnosed lactose intolerant. Yes I should have remembered, I admit that, but blimey under the circumstances I was a bit shocked it had stuck with her to the extent she posted about it.

emptyempire · 06/06/2021 09:22

I recognised an ex work colleague because their username had their name in and they mentioned the town I used to work and a few other details. I didn't know her very well anyway (different departments) and I remember just smiling to myself at the coincidence.

MrsAudreyAlfredRobertsOBEHmm · 06/06/2021 09:26

No, but I live in hope

HandfulofDust · 06/06/2021 09:31

Not me but there was one I definitely suspected was from someone I know and referenced a party my child had been to.

fruitsaladyummyummy · 06/06/2021 09:48

Not on here but a huffpost article popped up on Facebook that turned out to be about DH from someone he had a brief relationship with. She had a whole blog website and turns out she had been stalking us A LOT. I thought it was a random coincidence she had been turning up at random events we went to, deciding to take part in extreme sports competitions she knew he would be at (and getting disqualified within an hour because she was so unprepared). Writing posts about our engagement party etc. He always described her as the "crazy ex" and I always rolled my eyes and defended her because I hate when men jump straight to "oh she's crazy". Turns out she really was though 🙃.

Stark reminder to keep your social media private, I didn't even think I posted very much!

AgathaAllAlong · 06/06/2021 13:02

@Dontwanttobeatwat was it "boobs to sleep" by any chance? Grin

OMG that is quite creepy. Has it stopped? Hopefully, she's moved on.

MoisterThanAnOyster · 06/06/2021 17:01

My DSis complained posted on here about her role at my wedding.

ghostyslovesheets · 06/06/2021 17:05

No - which surprises me as I recently went to a wedding and took half the food home in my bag

Angel2702 · 06/06/2021 17:05

Yes a post was written about me and my family. The poster then deleted it when they realised we could see it.

Did go to show how everyone took their side of the story without questioning.

TidyDancer · 06/06/2021 17:43

I recognised someone I knew (not well, more friend of a friend type thing) because she posted her DCs unusual names. I did tell her I'd recognised her (without telling her who I was) just in case she posted anything else personal and someone else recognised her too.

AngelDelightUk · 06/06/2021 18:08

Sadly not but what was the SWAT prank!!!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 06/06/2021 18:24

@AngelDelightUk

this one.
nasty pranked played on Justine.
from memory the site crashed and then people had issues logging back on.
it was bad.

Ever suspect a MN post has been about you?
Herecomesanothernamechange · 06/06/2021 18:30

It's made me realise that nothing you post on the internet is actually anonymous

Terrifying thought.
Also the reason I name change every 5 mins!
