Portugal possibly going back onto the amber list.
The only thing keeping my parents going is coming to celebrate toddlers DD’s birthday in the summer. It’s getting beyond ridiculous now. Feeling so low today, I miss my family so much.

I haven’t rftf or seen updates list but if Portugal is Amber I presume there’s no where really to go

Iceland maybe...

MaxNormal · 03/06/2021 19:20

How much longer is the arse actually going to get dragged out of this? Hancock said in January that once the vulnerable were done everything would open. Instead we're now being told that 21 June is looking unlikely.
Like it or not, travel is a necessary and important part of our economy and at this rate there will be no low-cost airlines once all this is over. These are people's jobs, livelihoods and businesses.
Also, I want to travel. I want to get away from the UK and go somewhere different. I'm losing patience and I'm beyond caring about this sodding pandemic.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 03/06/2021 19:21

If Australia's so great I've no idea why people aren't falling over themselves to qualify to live there and go.

QuentininQuarantino · 03/06/2021 19:31

Of course it’s to do with Brexit, people from the EU can go to Portugal without issues. Confused

But why do green first then?
QuentininQuarantino · 03/06/2021 19:38

I imagine they were not expecting to be left off the EUs white list yesterday. The Spanish press was reporting just yesterday that there’d been talks between grant shapps and the Spanish govt and it had been all but agreed the Spanish islands would go on green - “very shocked” by the news apparently.

But I mean that the EU isn’t stopping citizens travel round EU - were Brits EU citizens presumably they’d be part of that. I suppose there’s every chance the British govt would have exercised a veto though, using their sovereignty.

Kinkybutkind · 03/06/2021 19:43

The only reason Portugal was on the green list to start with was the very important football match.

Call me an old cynic but funny how now that match is over and the 12,000 English folk are back home, having squashed together mask free in the various bars and restaurants, we are increasing the alleged risk!

It’s a ridiculous system and decisions are being made by a ridiculous Prime Minister who wouldn’t comprehend statistics if they were written in crayon. Nothing this government does is about keeping the country safe...

SlipperyDippery · 03/06/2021 19:56

Does the government care that much about fans being present at the champions league final?

From what I can remember, it was due to be played somewhere else, possibly Turkey, then was moved to Portugal because it was green listed, rather than Portugal being green listed because of the match.
@SofiaMichelle It isn’t leisure travel?! 🤷🏻‍♀️
Well it is, even if you think it's not.

OP i am sorry there are so many posters who delight in twisting knives [flowers[

MarshaBradyo · 03/06/2021 20:03

I don’t think it’s Brexit more an idea from EU re Indian variant in that direction

And must be number of cases in other

It is a lot deal with I know though so a lot of sympathy all round. My home country is very much off limits so I sympathise

Laiste · 03/06/2021 20:03

Flowers even :)

QuentininQuarantino · 03/06/2021 20:11

I know but I meant I don’t think the EU could have stopped Brits from traveling around the EU of Brits were still EU citizens, variant or not.

I don’t mean politically (I don’t know what to think about that!) but practically.

JebelSherif · 03/06/2021 20:12

@junipertree2

It is very frustrating OP. Holding that football final thing between two English clubs in Portugal was possibly the stupidest decision ever. Football seems to be more important than life or death, literally. And THAT's the joke.
... to be fair, during this pandemic, the football has kept many people sane, although I agree the CL final should have been in England, Coventry or somewhere around there...

I believe the FA offered both Wembley and Villa Park as venues but UEFA wanted us to wave the standard PCR testing checks for their officials which was refused

BonnieDundee · 03/06/2021 20:19

It takes a few selfish people to put us back to January.

Surely nobody still believes that its only spread by selfish people. How 2020 Grin

Justinversusmrtumble · 03/06/2021 20:20

@Laiste There's lots of schadenfreude on threads like these.

StoneofDestiny · 03/06/2021 20:30

The UK borders should have been closed at the start.

More worried about keeping the population safe than people travelling abroad for any reason.
I know people who went to India mid pandemic for 'an essential funeral' (not essential by any calculation IMO), and are returning via another county to by pass quarantine.
Seriously - we can all claim priorities - but the health of the majority trumps the lot. We all want our normal lives back.

Mandalay246 · 03/06/2021 20:42

We don't live in fucking Oz or NZ, they have a totally different structure and landscape from ours. If you love them and their draconian crap so much, you go and move there. Thank fuck we don't have draconian Kim Jong-un wannabes in power here.

You've really got a bee in your bonnet haven't you. The people of "fucking Oz and NZ (apart from Victoria at present) are enjoying life very much thank you. As for "draconian Kim Jong-un wannabes" - I'm pretty sure no-one in this part of the world would swap our leaders for yours at the moment. Honestly, you haven't a clue so why don't you just shut up.

When did I claim to have a clue about living there other than knowing it's very different from here. So what? If it suits them then they can have it, and similarly, people from the UK who love it so much can find a way to go there, too. But of course, I didn't become personally insulting to people from there the way you just did, which again, is against Talk Guidelines, hence the deletions already on this thread. Hmm

Erm - that suggests you do think you know about living in that part of the world - or at least knowing more about their leaders than their own people do. In fact you have personally insulted their leaders, so don't be so high and mighty.

Never mind, you carry on with your pandemic and we will carry on with our free and easy life Smile

MarshaBradyo · 03/06/2021 21:13

It’s great posters in Aus are having a great time

It’s not really that relevant to here though

IntoAir · 03/06/2021 21:32

This.

It's a case of one in, all in.

But some people are finding it hard to understand this.

Londonmummy66 · 03/06/2021 21:35

I can't understand why the UK didn't put Portugal on the amber list before the football match. I can understand a match being abroad when the teams are from 2 different countries but absolute madness to hold a football match overseas when both teams are from the UK.
