Portugal possibly going back onto the amber list.
The only thing keeping my parents going is coming to celebrate toddlers DD’s birthday in the summer. It’s getting beyond ridiculous now. Feeling so low today, I miss my family so much.

I relate. My 11 month old son has yet to meet my family. They're in the UK. I'm in Germany. It's sad but I find there's nothing to do except accept it 😓
@Ickythefirebobby I think anyone with any intelligence can see that saying that sentence doesn’t mean all were arsed about is something as trivial as a two hour party tbf.
As I said, that’s what you said in your first post. My crystal ball was broken this morning. Not sure why you’re being snotty, as I said in my first response, hopefully you’ll get to see them. It can’t be easy for those missing family.

Justinversusmrtumble · 03/06/2021 17:40

@Ickythefirebobby Sorry I wasn’t meaning that towards you, apologies

People aren’t simply telling OP she is BU, they’re being spiteful. I’m sure some people are positively loving picking apart @Justinversusmrtumble for not predicting a pandemic of this magnitude, for having the audacity of moving abroad many years ago and even worse, daring to be sad and scared that she won’t see her elderly parents. At no point, did she say that she has it worse than anyone else or that her feelings are worse than those who have lost family members.

I was raised for part of my childhood by my grandmother. She was relatively fit and healthy, caught Covid in hospital after being treated for a fall. She died within days. I miss her dearly but she lived a long, full and rich life with many experiences. Of course it’s sad, it’s not a tragedy though so don’t fucking lump my family into that group of people who think our loss trumps everything else.

It's clear this is a Brexit thang.

Has Australia and New Zealand now been added?

Is it reciprocal?

Justinversusmrtumble · 03/06/2021 18:01

@Haenow Thank you 🙏

So sorry about your Grandma x

This has sod all to do with Brexit, NZ and Australia have sealed their borders, so no you can’t go there.
Justinversusmrtumble · 03/06/2021 18:05

@GoldenLabbie What’s it to do with then 🤷🏻‍♀️I don’t think anyone really knows or understands any of this

It’s to do with the ongoing pandemic. People all over the world are being restricted from travelling. It’s not just a U.K. thing. People in Australia for example aren’t allowed to go anywhere, if someone living in Australia who’s not an Australian citizen left for whatever reason they would not be allowed back in.

BoringOldBitch · 03/06/2021 18:10

@Binkybix

I don’t understand - they can still come can’t they and just quarantine?
According to gov.uk, You should not travel from the UK to amber list countries or territories. If you're already in one, you can come back to the UK if you follow the quarantine rules listed on the website.

In practice though nothing is stopping you. No-one will stop you departing, no-one will stop you returning.

'This has sod all to do with Brexit, NZ and Australia have sealed their borders, so no you can’t go there.'

So why GoldenLabbie has Portugal been taken of the list and Australia and New Zealand been added to the green list?

There is no where bar Iceland anyone can travel to in Europe.

Except the money for the tests.

Add on an extra £300 to your bill.

maddening · 03/06/2021 18:24

They can come and quarantine at home with you? They are not working so a week at home would not hurt?

MaxNormal · 03/06/2021 18:26

Except the money for the tests

Yes that is true.

TurquoiseLemur · 03/06/2021 18:42

@JellyTumble

If you move away from family these are the risks you take unfortunately.
You are aware that a lot of people have to move away because of jobs? Or because their birth family is unsupportive, abusive, etc?

It's not about feeling superior.

If you are comfortable where you grew up, and with your family, great. A lot of us are not in that situation.

SofiaMichelle · 03/06/2021 18:43

There's absolutely no need for leisure travel to foreign countries whilst we're in the middle of a pandemic.

If you book leisure travel abroad at the moment you're taking a risk that it will backfire.

Everyone knows that.

DreamingNow · 03/06/2021 18:50

Well the OP isn’t talking about travelling for leisure....
Whereas football fans certainly and I didn’t hear the uproar about that....

DreamingNow · 03/06/2021 18:56

@Justinversusmrtumble, my take on it is that travel will reopen soon with a vaccine passport. The U.K. will line itself with the EU there.

I think we will need to find another way out than stopping travel. Bar the fact it has a huge impact on economies, it’s not sustainable long term.
But seeing that nothing has been done yet to support countries that are not as rich (and therefore no vaccine etc...), the issue isn’t going to go away soon. I rather suspect it will become endemic in some areas.
What shape this will take, bar those passports, I don’t know.

I’m just quietly optimistic that things will have settled down by the end of the summer (I have to say I will struggle if it hasn’t)

Justinversusmrtumble · 03/06/2021 19:02

@SofiaMichelle It isn’t leisure travel?! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Presumably because they have so few cases there, NZ is Covid free I think and has been for a while. They still won’t let you in though.

Yes, it's all leisure. Hmm So glad I have the excuse of probate for my dead father.

How long are we going to be 'in the middle of a pandemic', doesn't seem to be going anywhere.
I don't think Long Covid is an official illness, again some people want this thing to go on forever:

I can assure you that nothing would make me happier than to not constantly feel like someone is sat on my chest. I’ve been like this since having Covid in September.

Haenow · 03/06/2021 19:10

There have been multiple long threads lambasting people who want to go abroad yet far fewer about the football fans travelling en masse to Portugal. Wonder why?! Hmm (And no, before anyone asks, I’ve not been abroad since pre Covid and I have no plans.) People are entitled to feel miffed and complain about things, however minor.
