To tell her?

NC for this.

My friend has just had a baby. She announced the name to our friend group on WhatsApp. It’s very unusual. Personally, I don’t like it.
To be honest, I more than don’t like it and think it’s a ridiculous thing to call a child.

We all congratulated her and said he’s gorgeous (which he is!) etc but none of us have passed comment on the name.

She’s messaged me separately asking if the name is a bit much.

AIBU to tell her the truth, gently?

Definitely just say you like it and leave it at that.

FierceBarrie · 04/06/2021 19:26

@MaybeMaybeNotJ

I’m sad she changed it. Navy is lovely.
Navy-Lee is a silly name for an adult who wants to be taken seriously in life.

Good for her for coming to her senses.

People give their children names they’d never want to be saddled with themselves.

@AmandaHuggenkizz

An update.

Navy has been renamed.

He was three days old when I had a 4am text from my friend saying “It’s fucking awful, isn’t it?”

She’s asked a number of people and it seems we all stuck to the polite “it’s unusual and if you love it that’s all that matters” line so she put two and two together.

That's great news. So much better for her to change it now when he won't recognise his name yet so will be totally olbivious to all of this. Did she change it to something better?

dayswithaY · 05/06/2021 09:50

Oh no, I loved Navy-Lee!

Burgundy-Nigel?

Grapewrath · 05/06/2021 09:52

Shame it’s a lovely name.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 05/06/2021 09:59

I'm guessing your friend has read this thread?

Undersnatch · 05/06/2021 11:09

Oh god what a horrible thing to lift from a MN thread. Gutter journalism. Sounds like it could have been a few of her friends though.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 05/06/2021 12:48

The soft job those jurnolists have got sitting around on Mumsnet waiting to pounce on threads.

whyayepetal · 05/06/2021 12:57

A knave is a dishonest person. Perhaps she would rather that nobody associated that with her son’s name - people might suppose that the “Navy” part is a descriptor of the Lee part, and not in a good way!

saltinesandcoffeecups · 05/06/2021 14:53

@Calmate

I recently met a mum with a 2 week old baby boy called . . . .Colt ! His mum is horsey.
Actually that’s a fairly common name in the US it’s usually a shortened version of Colton. Not unusual at all to see a Colt in the wild, so to speak 😁
Nogoodusername · 05/06/2021 15:36

Still got “in the navy” stuck in my head

Zzzzzzxxx · 05/06/2021 15:44

I quite liked navy. I wouldn’t of hyphanated it with navy-lee my self but it’s a shame she changed it

Burmilla · 05/06/2021 19:07

Given that a lot of children get their names shortened by their friends, he's going to get called "Navel"at best, worst could be "Lavvy". Let's hope the child has a strong ego.

It really isn’t. Not for the poor child lumbered with it.

Yep. And still clearly oblivious to Leverson. Gutter journalism is the correct description. But sadly rats are very happy living in the gutters.
