NC for this.

My friend has just had a baby. She announced the name to our friend group on WhatsApp. It’s very unusual. Personally, I don’t like it.
To be honest, I more than don’t like it and think it’s a ridiculous thing to call a child.

We all congratulated her and said he’s gorgeous (which he is!) etc but none of us have passed comment on the name.

She’s messaged me separately asking if the name is a bit much.

AIBU to tell her the truth, gently?

Sorry, I meant Navy-Lee.

SaturdayRocks · 31/05/2021 04:00

This thread was worth it just for throwing out Fierce Barry to the universe.

Hydrate · 31/05/2021 04:05

Without the hyphen it's ok. Not a bit much, but quite drab.

romdowa · 31/05/2021 04:33

The hyphen needs to go but navy definitely isn't the worse name I've ever heard. Names grow on people , I know a few children called skye and at the start I thought it was an awful name but it just suits them now .

stopgap · 31/05/2021 04:42

@CrownKettle

To be fair, she could get a theme going if she has anymore. I’m thinking RAF-Gary, Army-Janet and Royal-Marines-Keith.
This is superb 😁
Vulvasaur · 31/05/2021 04:49

Scrumptious-Roy would have been better imo

Mypathtriedtokillme · 31/05/2021 05:17

Glorious-Garry?

Embracingthechaos · 31/05/2021 06:14

I think Navy would be ok (a bit odd and not my cup of tea, but I think it's passable) and Lee would be ok, but not Navy-Lee.

Embracingthechaos · 31/05/2021 06:19

I knew a girl called Sarah who was bullied for her name at school. It can happen to anyone.

I think this is very true. Obviously if you call the kid Farty McPiss-pants then you're asking for trouble. But generally speaking, an unusual name doesn't actually garner much attention at all. I have an extremely normal name that is in no way interesting, nor does it rhyme with anything unfortunate, and I was bullied horribly in school (for other reasons which I won't go into) The bullies managed to come up with a very nasty, catchy nickname that was a play on my real name. You can make fun of literally any name if you really want to.

Pinkypink · 31/05/2021 06:49

@NewPapaGuinea Fierce-Barry made me sob.

It's not horrendous but it's a ridiculous name made worse by the hyphen and addition of Lee.
However I would be very cautious about your response.
If it was me I would suggest using just Navy. Still quite odd but less embarrassing

Pinkypink · 31/05/2021 06:50

Lord I hope your friend isn't on mumsnetConfused

wingingit987 · 31/05/2021 07:00

Keep your mouth shut it's none of your business as for the name I personally wouldn't have gone with lee big however navy is cool and different.

Csx99 · 31/05/2021 07:04

It's not as unusual as you'd think, I've heard it a few times now! I don't think it's awful, definitely not a name I'd use but nowhere near what I was expecting Grin

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 31/05/2021 07:08

@Mypathtriedtokillme - I do actually know of a Jaykub. And an Izzak. And a Clhoe.

teanosugar2 · 31/05/2021 07:11

I was expecting worse than that. Like something utterly ridiculous. Personally I think it is an awful name and not my taste at all but I have heard of another Navy so wasn't totally shocked by it.

DancesWithTortoises · 31/05/2021 07:14

Please tell her. The poor child will be teased in school, for sure.

Some parents have no thought for the poor child growing up.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 31/05/2021 07:16

I hope the surname is not Cooper or he will sound like a pair of jeans! Wink

custardbear · 31/05/2021 07:19

I think you should tell her Fierce Barry could be a contender 🤔
Really hate any hyphenated first names, this does sound like chav fodder though

Roselilly36 · 31/05/2021 07:23

I would never comment on a friends choice of name, if I didn’t like it, it’s rude and would make the mum feel uncomfortable, it is not my baby to name, so quite honestly none of my business. Keep quiet if you want to keep the friendship.

extravirginoliveoil · 31/05/2021 07:44

9 pages of reading and I’m signing In the Navy by YMCA.

jacks11 · 31/05/2021 07:46

Because she has specifically asked, I think it fair enough to tell her your thoughts. Had she not asked, I would have kept my opinion to myself.

Chunkymenrock · 31/05/2021 07:49

The hyphen Lee is just awful. Navy is quite nice on its own though.

HaveringWavering · 31/05/2021 08:04

If he was in Aus he could be in a class with FeeBee, Jaycub and Aimee so navy-lee would stand out.

@Mypathtriedtokillme agree with the first two but “Aimee” is a completely standard spelling of “Amy”; in fact it’s more authentic as it is the past participle (feminine) of the French verb “aimer” meaning “ to love” and the name means “loved”.

Bluesheep8 · 31/05/2021 08:04

I keep hearing it in my mind as "Navally".

Or Navelly as in navel/belly button Grin

HaveringWavering · 31/05/2021 08:05

Strictly speaking there should be an acute accent on the first “e” so Aimée but it’s fair enough to omit that in an Engkish- speaking country.
