NC for this.

My friend has just had a baby. She announced the name to our friend group on WhatsApp. It’s very unusual. Personally, I don’t like it.
To be honest, I more than don’t like it and think it’s a ridiculous thing to call a child.

We all congratulated her and said he’s gorgeous (which he is!) etc but none of us have passed comment on the name.

She’s messaged me separately asking if the name is a bit much.

AIBU to tell her the truth, gently?

I don't mind Navy, though I really do love Blue. The hyphen Lee is awful, though.
I can't stop laughing at Fierce - Barry.
It should replace Balonz on these type of threads for evermore.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 31/05/2021 09:04

Keep it, but change the spelling to Nayveigh Grin

Yellowcrockpot · 31/05/2021 09:07

@Wilkolampshade

It'd be a gift to an arsehole like me... If he likes partying, he'd be Ravey Navy, potholing : Cavey Navy, curly hair: Wavey Navy, lifeguarding: Savey Navy, etc etc.
Some of these have made me laugh, and feel guilty for laughing. Its changed my mind completely, this poster is very correct, so many available ways to be awful about this given name.
Yellowcrockpot · 31/05/2021 09:08

Savey navy Grin

Sorry, yeah totally 360. Im still sniggering, which is awful.

SeaSweet · 31/05/2021 09:08

There are a few kids in my area with very similar names, adjectives appended to a classic name. I could name about 5 of them. I thought it was maybe a "thing" as I'd never come across this type of thing before knowing these kids. I'd go with what a pp suggested and say why are you asking are you having second thoughts? Then temper your opinion based on what she says.

Dogoodfeelgood · 31/05/2021 09:09

The hyphen is very trailer park vibes but the two individually as first name middle name are okay, and Navy even better on its own.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/05/2021 09:11

IMO it’s pretty awful, especially the twee hyphening.

To me it’s verging on child abuse to give a daft, made-up name, just because the parent is desperate to be ‘different’. Attention seeking on the part of the parent, IMO.

Twoforthree · 31/05/2021 09:16

I’d be blunter. “I don’t like it personally, but some people might. It’s up to you”

menomary · 31/05/2021 09:20

My first thought was 'poor lad, he's going to have that Village People song thrown at him right through school'.

Then I thought, he'll own it, wear it with pride and become a catwalk model, looking really cool. I

f he ends up working on the supermarket checkout though, it might not work quite as well

PurpleMustang · 31/05/2021 09:30

I would go along the lines that it will forever be mispronounced and misspelt and asked to constantly spell it. It amazing even in my 40's how many times I still have to spell out my name. Not saying people should know it, but booking appointments etc. It does get really old, real quick.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 31/05/2021 09:31

@DancesWithTortoises

Please tell her. The poor child will be teased in school, for sure.

Some parents have no thought for the poor child growing up.

I think it’s even less than they will be teased as children. But won’t someone think of the forms they will need to fill out, try to get voice recognition to actually recognise their name and have to correct the spelling forever. (From ordering a coffee to every govt piece of paper work)

If names need a colour in it, I’m naming my next cat, Crimson-Meow like it’s some low rent cat superhero.

PaperbackRider · 31/05/2021 09:47

It's fucking awful! Anything with a hyphen is shit anyway, but when half isn't even a name?
And everyone is thinking the same thing but doesn't want to say it....

Subbaxeo · 31/05/2021 09:55

That made me laugh so much! @Mypathtriedtokillme

@NewPapaGuinea

It’s not a terrible name at all. I was thinking something like Fierce-Barry 😂
Makes note for firstborn 😂
Peregrina · 31/05/2021 10:26

But when my DS was born we gave him a name which was considered old fashioned and people didn't hesitate to comment.Think of a name like Archibald, although it wasn't that. Since then the name has raced up the charts and people have forgotten what they thought of it.

Arrowheart · 31/05/2021 10:40

Love Navy. Hate the Lee bit.

Inertia · 31/05/2021 10:41

@LovelyLadyLily

I agree, with another part to rhyme after the hyphen too. I hope little Gravy-Pee enjoys his schooldays.

Inertia · 31/05/2021 10:48

Or for those who remember Vic Reeves Big Night Out : Wavy Davy Navy

I don’t mind Navy actually, have definitely heard more way-out names. Would make Lee a straightforward middle name and drop the hyphenation. You need to be bold and have the courage of 6our convictions for a daring name choice.

Agree with the PP who suggested responding with a question - why is your friend asking/ is she having second thoughts etc.

Killahangilion · 31/05/2021 10:48

I like it. I'm not a fan of common names and having lived with an unusual name for 55 years, he'll be grand.

But no worse than Dave the Rave, Steve the Peeve, Slobby Bobby, Dirty Bertie, Shimmy Jimmy the dancer and Plaque Jack the dentist.
Ckzoaa · 31/05/2021 10:59

I like Navy I just detest all hyphenated names they make me cringe so the -Lee would be a nope from me. Just be gentle when responding to your friend she obviously is having doubts about the name herself.

Amdone123 · 31/05/2021 11:12

I'm hoping the op comes back, says her friend has changed her mind and that l'il Barry is thriving.

81Byerley · 31/05/2021 11:12

I don't like hyphenated names, and I'm imagining him when he's a builder or a bank manager, introducing himself. Navy wouldn't be so bad though.

dapsnotplimsolls · 31/05/2021 11:37

When I say it out loud, it reminds me of an advert, 'Maybe it's Navy-Lee'!
